SSRVM Magazine Bangalore East E October 2021 “Jai Guru Dev” Guru’s message on ‘Finding the divinity in oneself’ It is natural that mind harbors desires. Desires don’t ask your permission; they just quickly visit and stay. A soul is connected to God, if he or she knows how to manage desires, and is not materialistic. God is neither far away nor difficult to reach. All we need is deep acceptance and total surrender to God. Being simple, humble and involving oneself in community service helps one to find divinity along with happiness. “Drop this want to be liked by everyone. As long as you are the beloved of the Divine, that is good enough. So walk towards the Divine. When you realise that the Divine adores you so much, then you will not need anything else. ”- Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar

SSRVM Magazine Bangalore East E October 2021 Principal’s Message Laurels and Recognitions play a significant role in motivating one to climb greater heights of achievements. It is often noticed that the face of the institute is the one who carries the entire responsibility on his or her slender shoulder and is the one bestowed with appreciations for the exemplary contributions or achievements. However, it is a known fact that in order to achieve a milestone there are many aspects involved as well as the contributions of many heads, hands and hearts. It is a meaningful collaborative process that adds to the success of an organisation. Each time I walk up the dias to receive an award for the numerous categories in the terrain of education, I instantly run a prayer through my system thanking the Divine. As I hold the prestigious award with pride, I yearn to express my gratitude to all the close associates who made it possible for me to add another feather in my cap. As I reel out the names of all the key members, my heart beats happily acknowledging the unsung heroes who never fail to do their bit back stage or rather behind the scene. The helpers, maids, gardeners and the supporting staff who also play a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the institution by doing their best, day after day from sunrise to sunset tirelessly. Kudos to their efforts and peaceful contributions which ensures me to slip into slumber as soon as my weary head rests on the soft pillow. I fondly recollect the verse in the poem by Robert Frost \"The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And I have miles to go before I sleep, And I have miles to go before I sleep.\" Dr Reshma Ganesh Founder Principal and Campus Director SSRVM, Bangalore East 1

SSRVM Magazine Bangalore East E October 2021 Navratri – A celebration of womanhood Navratri puja is one of the most auspicious festivals that is widely celebrated across the globe by all Hindus. The word Navratri is derived from the Sanskrit words 'Nava' means nine and 'Ratri' means night. Each day of the Navratri is associated with the different avatars of Goddess Durga and each day also has its own color significance. Every festival is characterized by vibrant decorations, delicious delicacies; families, friends, and communities coming together to celebrate and enjoy. These are the very reasons we look forward to festivals. They give us a much-needed break from the monotonies of daily life helping us lose ourselves for a few moments in the joy of celebrations. However, every festival has a deeper significance that becomes overshadowed by the festivities. While Navratri – the festival of nine nights is most popular due to the Dandiya raas, Garba dance, Durga puja and scrumptious food, many of us often forget its real significance. One can appreciate the deep symbolic significance of the Navaratri festival in the current times, and how powerfully it resonates with the concept of modern-day women empowerment! Navratri is a festival symbolized by religious fervor for the Goddess- the divine feminine. Known by several names such as Durga, Kali, Shakti, Amba, etc., the Goddess is revered and venerated all over India and the world. The Goddess fondly called as 'Mata'/ 'Maa' and fights with the demon Mahishasur for nine nights to restore balance in the World. The Hindu mythology introduces Durga as the fearless, formidable warrior Goddess who slays a vicious demon after he was rendered invincible by any man or God. Her three fierce eyes, her ten hands holding ten weapons, her ride on the lion – each depict her unassailable vigor. Today she stands tall, as a glaring example of feminine energy on earth, that's why Durga Puja has become a celebration of women and 'Durga', a synonym for women empowerment! “Navaratri is a celebration of woman power, a festival of women, for women, and by women.” Goddess Shakti, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Saraswathi are worshipped during these days for their eternal blessings Although the festival takes different forms in different parts of the country, the central theme of worshipping the feminine form of power remains consistent. The theme is most prominent in West Bengal, where the celebration is dedicated to breaking the norms of patriarchy and social taboos around women. The modern day pandals are themed to glorify the various roles a woman takes up in her life – from a dedicated mother, wife and sister to a boss/woman at work! As we propitiate Mother Goddess all the nine days, we are reminding ourselves that there can be no universe without a woman. When we distribute goodies to fellow sisters, we are asserting that 'a woman is a woman's best friend.' Hindus across the country pay their tribute to Maa Durga by worshipping 9 prepubescent girls who represent the 9 incarnations of the goddess. The ritual, known as Kanya Puja, is hosted on the eighth Contd... 2

SSRVM Magazine Bangalore East E October 2021 Navratri – A celebration of womanhood and ninth days of Navratri. The puja is traditionally performed by washing the feet of the girls, offering them new clothes, stationery items and cosmetics as gifts, and serving them the puja feast (a meal of halwa, chana and puri) before the other members of the house consume the same. It is believed that worshipping the little girls would give the devotees manifold returns for the prayers due to the feminine power vested in the girl child, who are considered to be the purest in Hindu mythology. Kanya Puja is performed in several parts of North India, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand. Navratri celebrations are essentially characterized by elegant and elaborate Garba festivities in Gujarat. Garba, a Sanskrit word for womb, symbolizes life. And Garba, the folk dance of the state is performed to honor Goddess Shakti or Durga, the feminine form of divinity. The significance of Garba for the womenfolk today lies in the fact that no matter the age or stature, they take a well-deserved break and come out from their homes to revel in a night, honoring the supreme woman power in an otherwise patriarchal society. While South India has diverse significance of the festival in its different states, they are all about honoring the divine Goddess. A festival of feminine felicitation, Bathukamma is marked by women dressing up in vibrant attires and dancing to the folk songs in circles around a decorated pot. Despite the varied celebrations throughout the country, the festival honors the supreme Goddess in one form or the another. The idols and images of Durga are adorned and worshipped for 9 days, reaffirming the belief that the woman is the creator, the sustainer and the destroyer of life. Navratri is often associated with women's empowerment because Goddess Durga, who is the feminine epitome of strength is worshipped. A modern woman of today is Durga who has the authority and power to fight the evils of the world. She is independent, she is fierce, she only requires a will to combat evil, be it at home, workplace, society or elsewhere! Ms. Vishnupriya & Ms. Varshini Facilitator SSRVM, Bengaluru East 3
