There is something supernatural hidden in these woods on the coast of Maine. The extraordinary setting has often been described by artists, writers and other poetic vagabonds as the unfinished landscape, one “on the verge of wilderness”. It is the meeting place of rocks and water, trees and horizon lines. And it stages Maine as an exceedingly generous and inspiring host for the gathering of creative minds, artistic genius and raw inspiration. Ripe with imagination and possibility, it invites the talent of a vibrant artistic community here annually, and has for generations. Where this raw material and human energy converge on campus, Maine Media Workshops + College is the site of magic. Maine Media is embarking on a bold new chapter. We have a new administration. Along with my appointment as its President, Elizabeth Greenberg has been appointed as College Provost. The staff is exceptionally talented, and the faculty—THE FACULTY—is remarkably accomplished. Maine Media is well on the path to accreditation, an achievement that promises new institutional partnerships, increased support and services for students, and a diverse educational experience. Dining services have been reconceived and lobster is on the menu! Maine Media’s campus is also being transformed. To accompany the Thorne Dining Pavilion completed just a short time ago, Maine Media will open a new classroom facility this year, presenting flexible space for classrooms, screenings, installations and creative engagement. This is a decisive moment and Media Art is the defining expression of our time. These expressions in Photography, Film, Creative Writing, and Book Arts came to identify the second half of the 20th century, and have evolved into the most compelling and provocative modes of expression in the 21st century – and perhaps in human history. The opportunity and great contributions of print, digital and electronic media are at once exciting and unparalleled. And 2020 promises a decade like no other. We are witnessing the convergence of unprecedented political, social, environmental and economic upheaval. It is a time of undeniable urgency. As our world undergoes an extraordinary transformation – and we take responsibility for rendering that story – finding a clear and determined voice for personal expression, and a community of support, is more important than ever before. I’m thrilled to be with you at Maine Media. As you will see in the following pages, there are many ways for you to get involved. Join us on campus. Visit often. Engage in the workshops. Enroll in a certificate program. Attend the screenings. Share your experience with others. Contribute to the conversation. With the clarity and focus of 2020, this moment could not be more inviting. I most frequently hear students describe their experience here as “transformational.” Welcome to the 48th summer season at Maine Media Workshops + College, a center for lifelong learning in Media Arts. Maine Media offers workshops and programs of interest to everyone: the professional seeking skills to move their career forward, the artist looking for inspiration and support to realize their creative ambitions, as well as individuals exploring their artistic talents for the very first time. Maine Media is an encouraging learning environment among knowledgeable and dedicated teachers and staff, world-renowned professionals and artists, as well as like-minded peers, to help move you forward on your path. I always love meeting our students and learn why they have traveled to Rockport and listen to them speak of their dreams and aspirations. Last year we welcomed students from 47 states and 25 different countries. Their ages ranged from 19 to 93! Some students come for a week, others stay for extended period. They participated in our Intensive programs, Certificate programs, or pursued a degree in our low-residency Master of Fine Arts program. Additionally, our summer Young Artists Program includes workshops for high school students in a wide array of media practices. For many “Yo” alumni, their brilliant creative and professional careers began in these summer workshops. Every year more than 30% of our students are returning alumni. We strive to remain as a place of creative sustenance for everyone who chooses to make this their community. We have scholarships available for youth and adults, and I am proud to announce that in 2019, we were approved to offer Title IV student-loan benefits for students in our Professional Certificate in Visual Storytelling (PCVS) and MFA degree programs. Military Veterans may also use their Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits towards training at Maine Media.. In 2020, we are offering nearly 350 different workshops. There are courses listed in this catalog that focus on learning new skills, new technologies, and improving craft. Others delve into areas of personal artistic growth in all genres of expression, image-making and storytelling. Workshops are a way, arguably the best way, to learn by doing. They are intense, fully immersive and hands–on. A great workshop becomes a safe and intimate environment in which to take on challenges, explore ideas, and discover new personal frontiers. The intensity of the shared experience often leads to form long-lasting friendships and professional connections. This summer we will open new classroom facilities to provide flexible working space for students in all of our programs. With many thanks to the generous support of our industry sponsors, our students will have opportunities to work with the latest equipment and technologies. 2020 marks the start of a new decade and exciting time for Maine Media Workshops + College. Let it be the start of a new time for you. Come immerse yourself in the opportunities we provide for professional, personal, and creative transformation. Elizabeth Greenberg Provost VIS IT WWW. BRENTON HAMILTON The Picture Maker You meet someone like Brenton Hamilton only once in a lifetime. To be welcomed into his lab is to be shown the direction towards your personal creative language. To understand your own alchemy. It’s an encounter that will help make public the private language that is meant to be shared through your art. It is a supportive space, one that is warm and welcoming amidst the shelves of paper, tin, glass, and emulsifiers. Brenton is a keeper of relics. He holds the knowledge of the nineteenth-century inventions that would forever alter our world. Within his expertise lives the history of photography and the keys to understanding how photography became the storyteller and the change agent it continues to be, decade after decade. He is the historian to a time and space when images first appeared on paper and photographers became witnesses and documentarians of culture. He is a photographer whose art lingers with you long after you’ve stopped looking. “We do all kinds of things here, we literally make handmade photography” he says, as we watch him working at the basins, in the Haas Lab on the Maine Media Workshops + College Campus. He pours the oxidizer over the latent image for the teenage students to see, and their faces turn to wonder and excitement. Small gasps of astonishment emit from their mouths as photographs appear on the drawing paper. The photographs, Brenton says, are “a mixture of a highly creative gestural process and a little bit of chemistry.” Brenton teaches nine different nineteenth-century historic photographic processes at Maine Media. A truly unique offering, there are only two schools on the East Coast that can claim this addition to their curriculum. During Maine Media’s two-week Young Artists summer program or their year-long Professional Certificate in Visual Storytelling program, the students watch as their images take form on metal, tintypes, embellished cyanotypes, and glass negatives. The photographs, some done on drawing paper, extend further into artistry through adding the use of chalks, collage, and pencil. “It’s an absolutely volatile medium for the artist,” Brenton says as he washes the emulsifier over the negative. The magic of the cyanotype image reveals itself.’ During his tenure, Brenton has helped his students go from amateurs to professional visual storytellers, shooting for The New York Times, Rolling Stone, National Geographic, and more. Brenton is an artist with pieces held in museums, a new book forthcoming this year, and work shown across the nation. He is a master at his craft and teaches his students to be masterful and devoted. Captivated, they put away their phones. Together they experience the world around them, in community. It’s here, with Brenton at Maine Media, that they remove any and all limitations of the modern age to fully realize the work, the magic, that lives inside of them. They are left with artwork that can physically be held, rather than viewed on a 3-inch screen. They become the storytellers, the change agents, the picture makers of our modern times. — Written by Licia Morelli 14 MAINE MEDIA WORKSHOPS + COLLEGE 2020

CIG HARVEY Discovering a Voice NEWS ABOUT CIG In April 2020, Andrea Modica, Debbie Flemming Caffrey, and Cig Harvey will release REVEAL. This is part of Yoffy Presses Triptych series, where three artists are given a word to inspire the creation of a small book of work. The three resulting books are sold as a set, inviting the viewer into the collaboration, to make connections between the projects and the overarching theme. Cig’s solo show about the senses will open Friday, July 3rd for the month at the Dowling Walsh Gallery in Rockland, ME. She is currently working on the adaption and visual design for the opera Bluebeard’s Castle.

This foundation continues to help inform even her new work—pieces looking to the natural world and its ability to jolt the senses and “reflect what is possible,” a concept that began for her all those years ago when she first arrived at the college. As Maine Media enters a new decade, it’s defined by a pivotal moment. A new President and Provost have been hired, and the board, of which Cig has been a member since 2011, is excited to pull back the veil to showcase the opportunities Maine Media could provide, as a model, for the art world at large. When asked about the future of Maine Media, Cig smiles, and a warmth of admiration for the workshops washes over her. It’s an appreciation that comes with the unique perspectives she holds as alumna, teacher, and board member. — Written by Licia Morelli

NATALIE KINGSTON Finding the Light Natalie Kingston was at a crossroads in her film career. It was at this crossroads that she made the decision to enroll at Maine Media Workshops + College. What started as a two-week endeavor to learn more about lighting and 16mm processes, ended in the completion of a two-month cinematography residency. A residency that, in turn, would be the launching point for a successful and award-winning cinematography career. Natalie credits her time at Maine Media as the “jumpstart [her] career needed.” Maine Media Workshops’ in-person experience gave Natalie momentum. Learning from mentors like Mo Flam and Mark Raker, Natalie was exposed to their processes and garnered insight to their years of experience in the field. She learned their personal approach to projects, and how they used photography and painting to inform their style in cinematography. This education led Natalie to align more with her personal style, process, and approach. Maine Media was not only a place to learn, it was also an intimate experience of community, one that isn’t achievable virtually. When asked about the live versus virtual experience, Natalie is an advocate for the power of being in-person. “You gotta be there getting your hands dirty, making the mistakes yourself, seeing what things do when you touch the lights and touch the camera. That’s the cool thing about Maine Media, you are really able to immerse yourself in the artform for a long chunk of time with no distractions. It’s cinematography all day, every day.” As her career continues, Natalie retains a strong sense of who she is as an artist. She attributes this knowledge to her time at Maine Media. “I came back [knowing that] I’m a unique artist, I have a unique perspective, and it’s important that I bring that to the table and bring that to every project.” This uniqueness rings true in her music videos with artists like Billie Eilish and PJ Morton, her work on award-winning feature films and documentaries, and her short films with directors Morgan Roberts and Eva Contis. In this work, you can see Natalie’s imprint as she brings the stories to life. The light and mood envelop you, and the world comes alive through the screen, so much so that before you even realize it, you’re emotionally transported into the lives of the characters. You live and breathe with them in each scene. Natalie’s projects speak volumes to her skill level. Her mark as an artist leaves an indelible fingerprint of her own sensibility, magic, and light, while staying true to the vision of the director and the story. Natalie is at the forefront of a fundamental shift that is currently happening in the film industry. More and more women are taking the leap into the role of cinematographer, and new pathways are emerging for their careers. Having a strong foundation in what she learned and experienced at Maine Media gives Natalie a sense of duty and mentorship for other women making their way into a cinematography career. “Seeing a woman behind the camera is very impactful... I’ve tried to put myself out there and show other women that it’s possible.” — Written by Licia Morelli
