6 | Welcome to Africa

Welcome to AFRICA There’s always been a mystique about the world’s second-largest continent, despite that all of mankind traces its origin to this land. Many of us still see it as a wild place—one where the planet’s most majestic, dangerous predators roam free in the tangled bushveld, where golden sands and warm exotic seas crash together to surfers’ delights, and dramatic mountains frame seemingly desolate swathes of grasses rustling with hidden life. On the northern side, most think of history and heritage—the legendary pyramids and temples of Egypt, the Bedouin culture alive and well in the Sahara Desert, the bazaars and twisting old cities of romantic Marrakesh, Casablanca, and the like. But to the surprise of those who have imagined only the wild places, this 11.7 million-square-mile land mass has quietly kept on as a hotbed of progress and development beyond its time as the cradle of humankind. With over 1.2 billion people calling its various 54 countries home, modernity hasn’t left Africa untouched. Cities like Johannesburg—home of one of the world’s best airports and one of the continent’s wealthiest cities—keep growing ever taller and beach-beautiful Cape Town sprawls ever wider. Nairobi in Kenya has become a multinational company base and Kigali, Rwanda’s modern architecture speaks to the many expats that live there. Contemporary amenities like WiFi, fine dining, festivals, and nightlife make no mistake that Africa is future-focused. Abu Dhabi 28 | Welcome to the Eastern Mediterranean & Persian Gulf

Welcome to the EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN & PERSIAN GULF Heritage travel is never more moving than in the world’s most ancient places. The opportunity to walk the same roads, travel the same deserts, and see the same seas as historical figures whose legacies have shaped modern humanity … these experiences are gifts from the past, handed down to us with the grace of ghosts. For these reasons, the lands of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf have resonated with those who have visited since the dawn of Western civilization, desired by all through the course of history and well into our era. Today, man-made marvels like the carved stone edifices in the city of Petra don’t awe alone. Jerusalem’s landmarks scattered throughout the Old City have new company when it comes to touristic draw. Now, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Dubai impress with their tall glass buildings and staggering wealth while Tel Aviv rises white and regal toward the sky. Adventure in the desert awaits just outside of those cities, as well as Amman, Jordan. Stunning coastlines are a bit more patient for your attention, from Israel’s Dead Sea to the Persian Gulf in the United Arab Emirates. But the most important continuous theme across these destina- tions is the lasting impression they each will leave. 1 ISRAEL: Regarded by those of the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths as the holiest of lands, Israel’s historical importance cannot be overstated. Mediterranean Sea Biblical sites house ancient relics and accept obeisance from the innumerous pilgrims on spiritual journeys. Yet on the lighter side, resort towns like Amman Jerusalem those along the Dead Sea provide a refreshing foil to the heaviness of Israel’s cultural significance. ISRAEL 1 JORDAN 2 JORDAN: Jordan is best known for its legendary 2 rock-cut city of Petra, but it finds many ways to astound visitors even beyond that valley’s borders. The capital, Amman offers ancient ruins of its own, as does the Dead Sea area. And just 0 miles 100 beyond, sand dunes inviting daring riders beckon 0 km 100 enticingly to those who want to leave their own impressions in the wilderness. 3 QATAR: Unimaginable wealth. Inconceivable luxury. In this peninsular country comprised of Red Sea desert and shore, makers of the highest per capita incomes in the world have designed a country of Persian Gulf QATAR the highest class. Here, an epically futuristic skyline 3 Doha 4 Gulf of Oman and homages to creativity like the Museum of Abu Dhabi Islamic Art awaken an appreciation for grace; thrills like a desert safari do the same for grit. UNITED ARAB EMIRATES 4 UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Seven emirates make up this nation splaying into the stunning 0 miles 300 OMAN Persian Gulf. Within them, Arabian, Persian, Indian, 0 km 300 and East African influences merge to create a culture proudly and distinctly Emirati. But that’s not to say the 21st century hasn’t made its mark. JORDAN This ancient country’s role in Christianity is a critical one, and the historical and spiritual significance it played is on full display with this comprehensive itinerary. Wadi Rum 0 miles 50 Air Desert Road 0 km 50 DAY 1 – ARRIVE AMMAN Upon arrival at the Amman airport, you will be transferred to your hotel, Bethany where you may choose to settle in or begin exploring on your own. DAY 2 – AMMAN – BETHANY/KING ABDULLAH MOSQUE This morning’s journey starts with a visit to Bethany, or Beit ‘Abara at the River Jordan. It was here that John the Baptist lived, preached, and baptized many, including Jesus Christ (Matthew 3: 13-17). The baptism site, known in Arabic as al-Maghtas, is located at the head of a lush valley just east of the Jordan River. Following this, return to Amman to visit the King Abdulla Mosque, built between 1982 and 1989. It is capped by a magnificent blue mosaic dome, beneath which 3,000 Muslims may offer prayer. (B, L) DAY 3 – AMMAN – JERASH/ANJARA/UM QAIS/PELLA This morning, travel north to visit the best preserved example of Roman civilization, the city of Jerash, which has been called the Pompeii of the East for reasons made obvious upon arrival. Walk among its theaters, churches, temples, and colonnaded streets before proceeding to Anjara, the biblical city featuring the shrine of the Lady of the Mountain at the Roman Catholic Church. Join other pilgrims in the large hall designed to receive those who come to honor the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. Next, on to Gadara for a magnificent view over the northern Jordan Valley, the Sea of Galilee, the Yarmouk River Gorge, and the Golan Heights. Within the Jordan Valley, your next stop is Pella, where most of the visible structures date from the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods (2nd to 14th centuries A.D.). See there the evidence of human occupation during the earlier Hellenistic, Persian, Iron, and Bronze periods, extending even as far back as the Paleolithic. (B) DAY 4 – AMMAN/UM AL RASAS/WADI MUJIB/KERAK/PETRA In the morning, head to Um Al Rasas, which contains ruins from the Roman, Byzantine, and early Muslim periods. The site is classified as UNESCO World Heritage, its most important discovery the mosaic floor of the Church of St. Stephen, which dates back to 785 A.D. It is the largest such floor in Jordan, and the most perfectly preserved. After, continue to Kerak, a 12th century hilltop fortress, which features galleries, towers, chapels, and ramparts that recall the age of Crusaders. End the day in Petra. (B) DAY 5 – PETRA Once the ancient Nabatean capital, this city gently reveals itself as you walk deeper among its hand-carved facades. Starting at the visitor’s center, each person is assigned a horse guided by a local Bedouin, who will lead you to the once hidden entrance to the lost city. After passing the tombs that are outside the city, move through an otherworldly crack in the sandstone—a winding, one-kilometer-long fissure between overhanging cliffs that seem to meet more than 300 feet overhead.
