By Ren\u00e9e Carl pend a few moments speaking with Gisele B\u00fcndchen about sustainability and it becomes clear her passion and commitment to caring for the planet runs deep. The supermodel\u2019s environmental credentials speak for themselves\u2014in 2020, she launched the Viva a Vida initiative that raised enough funds to plant 260,000 trees in the Amazon Rainforest, and in the same year, celebrated her 40th birthday by planting 40,000 trees. B\u00fcndchen is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme and was an Executive Producer on the Net\ufb02ix documentary Kiss the Ground about regenerative agriculture. A fashion icon without doubt. But one gets the sense that her environmental advocacy, and her connection to nature, is a cause closer to her heart. Having grown up with her \ufb01ve sisters in a small town in Brazil, the family spent a lot of time at her grandparents\u2019 small farm, where her appreciation of nature and seasonality developed. Since becoming a mother (to Benjamin, 12, and Vivian, 9), protecting our planet has become her mission. \u201cMy sense of responsibility for what kind of world I\u2019m leaving for my children became a priority,\u201d B\u00fcndchen says. \u201cIt became not just, \u2018I want to have a positive impact\u2019\u2014I want to leave the world better than when I got here.\u201d The earth campaigner believes we can all play a part in reducing our environmental impact by taking small steps in our everyday lives and having awareness about our choices. \u201cIt\u2019s very important to analyse our consumption, to understand the impact it has,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause every choice we make has an impact, from what we are buying at the grocery store, who we are buying it from, [how] it is packaged; being mindful in what is necessary.\u201d Reconnecting to nature and living by the three R\u2019s\u2014reduce, reuse, and recycle\u2014is a binding way of life for B\u00fcndchen. \u201cNo little change is too small,\u201d she says. \u201cIt can go from making sure you always have bags in your car so you don\u2019t have to get plastic bags at the grocery store, [avoiding] plastic bottles, having a garden, \ufb01nding your local farmers instead of buying from big grocery stores. It\u2019s all of those little things, and just being aware and mindful, because all those little things become the big things.\u201d Helping to educate her children, and the next generation, is an important responsibility for B\u00fcndchen and she is a \ufb01rm believer that children learn by example. \u201c[My children] see that we don\u2019t have plastic bottles, that we buy from local farmers, we grow our food as much as we can in our garden\u2014they understand that\u2019s important. It becomes natural to them. And I think this desire, as humans, is wanting to speed things up so much to the point that we forget to re\ufb02ect.\u201d B\u00fcndchen forged a reputation built on hard work and discipline in her modelling career, traits she readily applies to her environmental advocacy, leveraging her brand to promote a mindful lifestyle and sustainable practices within the corporate world. The planet warrior has recently been announced as IWC Schaffhausen\u2019s Environmental and Community Projects Advisor, a role she says is based on collaboration and mutual learning. \u201cI was very impressed with their purpose as a company. It\u2019s about how can we learn from each other, make the most positive impact that we can, and then hopefully inspire other corporations to do the same.\u201d The brand has released its Sustainability Report, which details its environmental targets, including key achievements such as certifying the gold and platinum that are used in its supply chain are traceable and responsibly sourced, and initiatives to phase out the purchase of forestry products such as paper, cardboard, wood and furniture, that are non-FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certi\ufb01ed. \u201cI felt very inspired and I thought: How can I learn from what they\u2019re doing and share that with as many people as possible, and how can I also share some of the things that I\u2019ve learnt in almost 20 years working and having [sustainability] as a guiding principle in my life,\u201d B\u00fcndchen says. B\u00fcndchen hopes the report and ongoing environmental transparency will inspire other businesses to commit to innovation and transparency. \u201cOther companies can look at it, get ideas from it and think, how can we better our practices?\u201d The bene\ufb01ts also extend to consumers, who can make an educated decision based on the environmental credentials of a company. \u201cHow can we make informed choices and decisions on what we are going to purchase for families if we don\u2019t know exactly how things are being done?\u201d B\u00fcndchen asks. \u201cThe more information you have about something, the better choices you can make, so this is why I think transparency is key. I wouldn\u2019t work for a company that does not have an environmental and social agenda because that\u2019s important to me, so why would I buy from a company that\u2019s not doing that?\u201d And when it comes to investments, B\u00fcndchen puts her money where her mouth is. \u201cI only do impact investing,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m not going to go and work hard [for the planet] and then go and invest in a company that is going to destroy the very thing I\u2019m trying to protect.\u201d B\u00fcndchen\u2019s own favourite IWC timepiece (aside from the IWC watch she bought for the father of her children, legendary US footballer Tom Brady, 16 years ago for his 30th birthday\u2014 \u201cI love that he can pass that watch on to our boys once they are older, and that has an emotional value to me\u201d) has a band composed of plants, minerals, and recycled rubber, and is part of the company\u2019s commitment to providing customers sustainable alternatives to leather. It seems apt that I\u2019m reading her the opening of Roger Lancelyn Green\u2019s Tales of the Greek Heroes, stories of immortals who wander amid the towering heights of great mountains, like those that rise behind us. Mid-sentence, Darcy turns to me and asks: \u201cIs Pan the shepherd still there?\u201d, and it really feels as though he might be. After all, we are on the island of Zakynthos, where the natural landscape\u2014ancient olive groves and saturated skies\u2014 seems touched by the otherworldly (in The Odyssey, Homer calls it \u201cwooded Zakynthos\u201d). Today, the south coast is lined with late-night bars and tourist traps, but our villa is near the north-east, where the rhythms of the day are shaped by nature, from the birdsong that greets our ears as we wake to the rising moon that shines yellow each night. Our base is Livadi, an airy \ufb01ve-bedroom villa close to the port of Agios Nikolaos. Cast in a C-shape, the house hugs a wide courtyard on one side, and on the other sees the landscape fall dramatically away, layer by layer, towards the sea, with the sloping path to the kidney-shaped in\ufb01nity pool fringed by herb gardens bursting with rosemary, thyme and oregano. The villa was originally designed by Dominic Skinner, an English architect and former associate of Norman Foster, who lives part-time in Corfu. Unusual in layout and scale, the property has two ensuite bedrooms \ufb02anking the courtyard and independent of the main house, making it perfect for teens who want their own space. As our party consists of two families with\u00a0four children under seven, we \ufb01nd ourselves spending much of our time in the double-height living room, where sunlight beams through the French doors. We had pre-arranged to have our pantry stocked before we arrive so we can immediately feed impatient and hungry mouths, and there\u2019s also a barbecue hamper that includes marinated meat and a bounty of salads \ufb01lled with feta and jewel-like tomatoes. One morning, we climb aboard the Becca, a boat guided by the intrepid Jason, a \ufb01sherman and freediver who catches sea bream and gathers white sea cucumbers. The west coast is craggy with rocks that erupt from the sea at alarming angles and are lapped by insistent waves. Jason darts through gaps and navigates the boat with enviable skill; he has been freediving since he was four years old, so he knows these indigo waters, their personality and depth. He takes us to the shipwreck on Navagio beach\u2014a half-hour pit stop\u2014to explore a rusted structure that had reportedly once been the Greek vessel Panagiotis, which smuggled goods from Turkey in 1980. Darcy and Rose, who is six, are thrilled by the idea that pirates and treasure may have been present here, and see the ship as their playground.
