Yet, this short doco is more than just a film. (For the past two years, Miranda and Martín have worked together under the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative’s newly created Open Category as requested by Miranda.) Projected onto three screens, positioned one in front of another, the black-and-white footage exudes a mesmerising, dream-like holographic Theatre mentor quality that is enhanced by visuals of Phyllida Lloyd with her swirling smoke, beams of light and an protégé Whitney evocative music score. And in Theatre, the brilliant English director Phyllida Lloyd teamed up with multi- disciplinary artist Whitney White for The Case of the Stranger, a performance that merges Shakespeare with beat poetry, music and observations on the themes of travel, borders and immigration. American artist After each installation, as each mentor and protégé and Visual Arts mentor, Carrie pair sat down for an intimate conversation on the Mae Weems motivations and processes behind their work, it was evident that the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative had once again accomplished what it set out to do when it was launched in 2002: To ensure the continued transmission of knowledge and expertise from one generation of artists to the next, through the cultivation Weems with her Visual Arts of real relationships and firm connections—a fact that protégé Camila Rodríguez was reiterated when the protégés of previous cycles Triana at New York’s attended the weekend in a show of support for this Everson Museum of Art year’s protégés. As Rebecca Irvin, Head of the Rolex Institute, says of the programme in her welcome address: “It’s based on the belief that art is a continuum, an accumulation of experiences over generations, and that artists, all artists, are in some way inspired by those who went before them. The Rolex programme covers all the arts… And in each of these categories, we invite great senior artists to take on a young professional and share not only craft and practice, but also their processes and indeed, their lives.” The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative has indeed seen its fair share of “great senior artists” participating in the programme. Sir David Hall, Sir David Chipperfield, Margaret Atwood, Brian Eno, Martin Scorsese and Sir Anish Kapoor are but just a few of the world-class talents who have participated in projects The premiere of that span architecture, dance, White’s The Case literature and music. [I said to Rolex] if you can find me someone who has a lot of interest in a lot of different things, then that would definitely be useful to me because we can learn from each other.” We chat with Miranda and Martín to find out more about their two-year partnership. How did you think the screening went last night? Lin-Manuel Miranda (LMM): I was very proud. I had not seen her film; I’d obviously participated in it, but it was a premiere for me too. When I checked in with her during the day, she was like: “It’s all going crazy; I’m going crazy”. So I knew it was going to be good because it means she cared. And I was very moved; I think the audience was, too. How did you feel it went? Agustina San Martín (ASM): Very well. I was so scared because it’s something so different from what I do. There was a very big goal of generating something specific that I had learnt with [Lin], which is to evoke the feelings of these people, and to let that Open Category protégé grow and seep into the audience. It was Agustina San Martín’s film definitely outside my comfort zone. There was a voice [inside my head] installation, Childhood Echoes, kickstarted the Rolex Arts Weekend all the time that was like: “It’s going to be horrible; everyone’s going to hate it, you’re going to humiliate us, you’re going to be naked in front of everyone”. But then, when the moment arrived, I was like: “Just let it go”. And it was very fun when I let go. In your promotional film with Lin for Rolex, you shared that you’re “really obsessed” about the composition and details of your work. What was it like to then let that all go to make this not-quite-documentary? ASM: I’ve always had the mistaken idea that the work is like math. You put the most amount of effort and thought into making these nuts and bolts so that it’s going to be the best. Then, I realised that emotions can be very primal, and that there are ways of getting to the emotional side that are completely unrelated to the cerebral side. It takes a lot of smartness and strategy to arrive at that emotional plane; it took me time to understand that. But when I did, I just I didn’t want to go back. LMM: Well, that’s the two things at play, right? There is also craft, which, you know, is something you build over the course [of time]. I remember going to the Library of Congress, and I went to see Oscar Hammerstein II’s papers. And these are songs that we learned as kids. I saw 30 pages of notes to arrive at “doe, a deer, a female 88 HARPER’S BAZAAR NOVEMBER 2022","deer”; there are 15 pages to get to “so long, farewell”. But I learnt from her—to see what’s in front of me. A lot of the thing we talked a lot about is: What is the actual thing filmmaking is about being present, and seeing it on that you’re trying to express and how do you get there? The day so that you don’t see it in the editing room. film had a very simple premise: What is the music that you remember from when you were a child? It’s a one- What have you gotten out of this entire process? sentence question, but there’s so much craft in making ASM: I definitely think I’m going to start making different us feel the things we saw in the film.
