The Sawtooth Ridge Trail, which happensto be right around the corner from The Cedar House Sport Hotel, offers up arolling, winding single-track haven for intermediate riders—in addition tosome spectacular views of the Truckee River Canyon. The main trail is a9-mile loop which is best ridden counterclockwise due to extensive scree(broken rock fragments), which makes ascending (clockwise) much moredifficult. The main trail also connects with many fire roads and the Mt.Watson trail network along the way. A Hike We Like | Pacific Crest Trail Zigzagging its way from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington, the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) boasts the greatest elevation changes of any of America's National Scenic Trails allowing it to pass through six out of seven of North America's eco-zones including high and low desert, old-growth forest, and alpine country. Indeed, the PCT is a trail of diversity and extremes. From scorching desert valleys in Southern California to rain forests in the Pacific Northwest, the PCT offers hikers and equestrians a unique and varied experience. Each year, an average of 300 hikers attempt to cover the full length of the PCT . Thousands of otherhikers and equestrians enjoy this national treasure each year - some traveling only a few miles in thecourse of a day hike. Whether you visit the PCT for a few hours or for a few weeks, you'll surely find auniquely Western scene that will rejuvenate, inspire, and surprise you. Two thousand six hundred andfifty miles of adventure and discovery are waiting. In the Tahoe Basin, the PCT runs along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, overlapping for 49 miles with the TRT (Tahoe Rim Trail) and then goes over the Donner Summit up to Castle Peak. There are several access points to the PCT that make for a great day hike which will give you a small insight of what wilderness hiking is like. The easiest access is at Donner Summit (see Mt. Judah Loop). Please ask us at the front desk for other access points to the PCT. A Hike We Like | Mt. Judah Loop Access: The Mt. Judah loop trail is accessed off the Pacific Crest Trail south of old Hwy. 40. Take Donner Pass Rd all the way to Donner Lake, Donner Pass Rd will go along the lake to the end of the lake and will then turn into Hwy. 40, which will go uphill. At the top of the summit, you will pass the Sugar Bowl Academy, turn left after the Sugar Bowl Academy onto the gravel parking lot. From there a paved road goes downhill—follow the road to the parking lot for the PCT. Description: The PCT south starts by climbing steeply up a granite headwall then flattens and follows the contours of the mountain, climbing moderately. Approximately one-mile from Donner Pass, turn left onto the Judah loop trail. The trail gently climbs to an existing jeep road near Coldstream Pass (between Mt. Judah and Donner Peak). Turn left onto this scenic jeep road and follow the trail which loops back onto the PCT. (T3 Adventures can provide a guided hiking option for this trail.) A Hike We Like | Shirley Canyon Directions: This trail starts in Squaw Valley at the end of Squaw Peak Rd. The entrance to Squaw Valley is 8 mi. south of Truck- ee on Hwy 89. The trail can be a bit confusing, but you can't go too wrong. Keep the large creek on your right on the way up the canyon. Look for blue paint marks on rocks to help you stay on the trail. Keep heading up and up and up, until you get to Shirley Lake, which is at the bottom of a ski lift. This portion of the trail is about 2.5 miles in length. If you choose to continue up to High Camp from Shirley Lake, it willadd approximately 1.5 miles to your journey.Comments: Shirley Canyon is a lovely trail that includes a wonderful variety of environments. Firstyou enjoy an easy hike with some interesting wet seeps in the forest floor, then you follow a creekthat is cascading down the canyon, eventually moving back into the deep woods, and finallyemerging onto some extensive granite rock scrambling - welcome to Shirley Lake. There are somesteep pitches to negotiate. Hiking boots and lot of water are strongly recommended.(T3 Adventures can provide a guided hiking option for this trail.) A Hike We Like | Five LakesDescription: This trail has a steep grade, but it’s mercifully short, which makes it incredibly popularwith hikers during the high season. This is a perfect off-season hike. The first 1/2 mile is the steepestgrade, and the next 3/4 of a mile continues uphill more gradually to the top of a ridge. Switch-backs make it easier, but there is almost no shade along the route, as you climb 1000 feet. At 1.8miles, you reach the Granite Chief Wilderness boundary and enter a land of red fir, white fir, androcks. A signed junction, a 1/4 mile farther, points you to the left toward the lakes with the trailheading directly downhill to the largest of them. From there you can follow numerous side trails tothe four other lakes, all east of the big one. Most people don’t go any farther than the first big lakewhere the swimming is excellent. The five lakes are set at 7400 feet; remember to bring sunscreen! The sun is strong at that high of an elevation. If you are seeking a challenge and want to be out hiking all day Five Lakes offers the great optionof continuing onto the Pacific Crest Trail towards Squaw, which provides an isolated wilderness ex-perience with fantastic views. Directions: Take 89 south towards Squaw Valley, turn right onto Alpine Meadows Rd. After about 2 miles you will see Deer Park Dr. on your left the parking and trailhead will be on your right. The Cedar House Sport Hotel – 10918 Brockway Rd. Truckee, CA 96161 T: 530.582.5655 – F: 530.582.5665 – www.cedarhousesporthotel.com

A Hike We Like | Tahoe Rim Trail Truly, a \"Trail like No Other.\" The Tahoe Rim Trail is one of the world’s premier trails. It passes through two states (California and Nevada), six counties, one state park, three National Forests, and three wilderness areas. This spectacular trail is 165 miles of single-track multiuse, winding from peak-to-peak around Lake Tahoe. It is a trail that offers something for everyone! Hiking and horseback riding are allowed on all portions of the trail, while mountain biking is allowed on the trail except in wilderness areas, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, and on trail segments thatoverlap the Pacific Crest Trail. The TRT Association was formed in 1981 as a non profit. Theconstruction of the trail started in 1984 and the trail was completed in September of 2001.The trail is broken up into 9 segments. The segments range from 12 miles to 32 miles in length. Most Hikers hike the trail in one big loop and camp on the trail, which is not neces- sary, however, because most segments can be done as day hikes. The entrances and exits to each segment are well marked and easily accessible. You can also just hike a portion of one segment as an “in and out” hike – meaning you walk as far as you feel like and turn around. The closest Tahoe Rim Trail Access is at Brockway Sum- mit (see next page– Brockway Summit to Spur View Trail Hike ). Please ask us at the front desk about other segment accesses and segment hikes. The Cedar House Sport Hotel – 10918 Brockway Rd. Truckee, CA 96161 T: 530.582.5655 – F: 530.582.5665 – www.cedarhousesporthotel.com

A Hike We Like | Brockway Summit to Spur View Trail Getting there: Turn right on Brockway road, turn right on 267,Follow 267 over the Brockway Summit, after the top of the Summit– Elevation sign— there is a sharp turn— right after the turn you will see a small parking lot on the right. Across from parking lot– there is a forestry road, which leads up to an alternative smaller parking lot next to the trail head – suggested for dog owners– so you don't have to cross the busy street. If you choose to drive up the forestry road, it is best to have a 4wd. The Trailhead is at the left hand corner of the parking lot. Description: This segment of the TRT is prized for its spectacular windswept vistas of Lake Tahoe, the Sierras and the Carson Range. The trail climbs away from Brockway Summit for several miles and into Tahoe National Forest’s thick and fragrant stands of pine, fir, and tobacco brush. You WILL HAVE LAKE VIEWS RIGHT FROM THE START OF YOUR HIKE. After approx. 1 mile, the trail splits and Spur View trail will go off to the left. This trail will take you to a beautiful overlook (as seen in picture above). With a little imagination, the rock formation at the top looks like three Indian heads– one looking straight at the lake and the other two to the right and the left. Some say they are guarding Lake Tahoe. The rocks are a great spot to sit down, have a snack, and enjoy the beautiful view. If you feel like you haven’t hiked enough, once youget to the overlook you can go back to the junction where you turned left and continue straighton the TRT. South Shore A Hike We Like | Rubicon Trail Directions: The Rubicon Trail can be accessed either from D.L. Bliss State Park or from the Emerald Bay parking lot. Comments: The Rubicon Trail is the only trail around Lake Tahoe that actually goes along the shore of the lake. The views are spectacular from this trail. The Trail is 6 1/2 miles long. From D.L. Bliss State Park to Emerald Bay it is 4 1/2 miles. Because of it’s location, the trail is probably the most popular hiking trail around Tahoe. Therefore, avoid hiking it on weekends if you can. It is an ex- cellent hike in the late spring/early summerseason. Due to it’s elevation (near lake level), it is one of thearea’s first hikes to melt out from the winter snow. During the hotter sum-mer months, you can stop at several spots along the trail and take a re-freshing swim in the lake. D.L. Bliss State Park offers a beautiful beach forafter hiking relaxation. This is the only trail featured that does NOT allowDOGS!! (T3 Adventures can provide a guided hiking option for this trail) The Cedar House Sport Hotel – 10918 Brockway Rd. Dog Friendly Beaches on Lake TahoeDogs are not allowed on any “state” designated swimming beaches, but there are dog friendlyoptions throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin.North Shore Kings Beach: Dogs are allowed on the east side of the Coon St. boat ramp. Coon St. Picnic Area is located on Hwy. 28 (N. Lake Blvd.) at the end of Coon St. Waterman’s Landing: the entire beach( rock beach) is dog friendly- there is a café as well with outdoor seating where you can have dogs. Carnelian Bay: Dogs are allowed on the rock beach next to Garwood’s. Hwy. 28 (N. Lake Blvd.) located in Carnelian Bay.West Shore & Tahoe City Hurricane Bay: Located on Hwy. 89 (W. Lake Blvd.) 4 miles south of Tahoe City. A rocky beach just off the highway, 1.4 miles south of Sunnyside. Lake Forest Beach Park: Located on Hwy. 28 (N. Lake Blvd) 1 mile east of Tahoe City. Turn onto Lake Forest Rd., then turn onto Bristlecone Rd. and follow to the end. Skylandia Park & Beach: Located on Hwy 28 (N. Lake Blvd) 1 ½ miles east of Tahoe City. Turn onto Lake Forest Rd., then turn onto Aspen Rd. and follow to the end.East Shore Hidden Beach: From the North Shore, take Hwy. 28 south to the Memorial Point Visitors Center parking lot, about a half-mile north of Sand Harbor. Park there only if you want to take a short, 20-minute dip, or, if they're available, in one of the hard-to-find parking spaces along Highway 28. Hidden Beach is locat- ed next to the highway, about a half-mile south of its intersection with Lakeshore Drive. From the lot, walk along the highway until you see the beach, which will be clearly visible from a guard rail between Hwy. 28 and the sand. (Caution: NUDE sunbathing allowed at this beach.) Chimney Beach: From the North Shore, take Hwy. 28 south to Sand Harbor. Just over a mile south of Sand Harbor, look on your right for the iron security gate of a private estate. Proceed south on Hwy. 28 another 200 yards until you come to a gated Forest Service parking lot on the east (mountain) side of the highway. Park in the little 30-car lot, walk across the highway, and take the easy trail down to the beach. It should take you about 5-10 minutes to reach the sand. Secret Beach: From the North Shore, take Hwy. 28 south to Sand Harbor. Just over a mile south of Sand Harbor, right as the tree line starts on your right hand side, look on your right for a small dirt parking lot. This is not a marked parking lot but usually always has a car or two parked already. Park and follow the dirt trail down toward the water. It’s an easy 10-15 minute walk down to the beach. This is a small beach, it is adjacent to the Thunderbird Lodge’s boathouse. Skunk Harbor: From the North Shore, take Hwy. 28 south to Sand Harbor. The parking and trailhead is roughly 15.5 on highway 28 starting in California into Nevada. Once the road starts to curve to the left and you see the lake again and a small valley below, park before the green gate on your right hand side. Watch out for parking in the turnout: the sheriff's department will ticket you mercilessly even if you obey the \"fire access - keep clear\" sign. Follow this road down to a fork at about 1 mile. The left fork will continue to Prey Meadows while the right fork continues on to skunk Harbor on the Lake's shore. Great secluded cove with sandy beach that dogs love! And a good 3 mile roundtrip hike for you.South Shore Kiva Beach: From the North Shore take Hwy. 89 south all the way passed Emerald Bay. After the Mt. Tallac turnoff on your right, look for the “Tallac” historic site on your left. Turn onto Heritage Way and then left again onto Tallac Rd. Follow Tallac Rd, which ends in a small parking lot. If this parking lot is full, you would have to drive back to 89 and park along the road and walk in. From the parking lot walk left towards the beach. This beach is the biggest dog beach around Lake Tahoe. It offers breathtaking views of Mt. Tallac in the back. This beach is worth the long drive to the South Shore. Bring a cooler and spend your entire day here. The adjacent Baldwin Beach offers Water Sport rentals like Kayaks, Paddleboards, etc. You can also combine one of the many beautiful hikes down there with a beach day. See “Southshore Hikes” Page 8.
