13. You are recognized for your practice and record in multiple jurisdictions and publications. You were also recognized as the Lawyer of the Year for a second time this year in The Law Awards. Can you tell our readers what the essence is of being recognized by a research publication? I like publication, because it fulfills a dimension that is distinct from the pragmatic, commercial side of things. The business of law has always been and will always be based on the academic component. I do not do it for any purpose other than keeping that component alive and not being dragged too much into the commercial and pragmatic side of things. I would encourage all lawyers to take part and to co-write with me. A decent number of the publications I have done had a co-author, usually a colleague. When they see the first publication, especially if it’s an M&A review, it gives them confidence and it gives them the ability to be more involved. 14. What advice would you offer to the next generation of growing legal professionals who are ready to rise up in the ranks? You need to do what you love and what you’re pas- sionate about. Hence, I think that it is crucial in this profes- sion to actually enjoy what you’re doing. I have not met any successful lawyers that do not have a passion for what they are doing. Secondly, know what you want from your career. Not everyone has to have the same objective. This is something that we try to help lawyers with in our firm. Thirdly, never regret any mistake you make. I don’t think any successful lawyer has been able to get to where they are without mistakes. As I always say, the path to success is paved with mistakes. The important thing is to identify them, learn from your mistakes and improve. Lastly, if you want to have that career, you need to have the endurance and the stamina to do it. If you like what you do as a lawyer, it is the most rewarding, not just financially or socially, but also intellectually. I think that’s key; being psychologically content with yourself and with what you achieve intellectually, financially and socially.a co-author, usually a colleague.
