ACKNOWLEDGEMENT First, thanks to Allah S.W.T because He gives us a chance to complete this assignment. Even though faced with lots of difficulties to complete this assignment, we still manage to complete it. Besides, thousands of thanks to Sir Mohd Zaihan Bin Hussin for all his support and guidance in helping us to finish our assignment of the library visit in the University Selangor (UNISEL) Library that really tested our abilities mentally and physically. We are deeply grateful from the bottom of our heart on his effort to educate us despite our weaknesses and lack of knowledge. Furthermore, without his guide our project cannot be done properly as what we have been prepared. He always gives supports and guide in how to do this assignment in purpose to produce a good outcome and have a good quality. Finally, yet importantly, we would like to thanks again to anyone who helped and guide us in order to complete this assignment. This work and report may not be possible without the help and understanding from our beloved family who always keep us going. 1.0 LIBRARY BACKGROUND Universiti Selangor (UNISEL), formerly known as Universiti Industri Selangor was established on 23rd August 1999. We are currently operating at two campuses; the sprawling 1000-acre Main Campus in Bestari Jaya and the City Campus in Shah Alam. Our establishment is in line with the State Government’s intention to make Selangor the leading regional education hub. Selangor plays an active role in the delivery of higher education programmes in order to enhance the development of human capital excellence. As one of the earliest private institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, UNISEL is unique as it is Malaysia’s first state- owned university. UNISEL operates on two campuses; the main campus is in Bestari Jaya and the city campus in Shah Alam. In 1999 until 2003, library operated in four (4) faculty resource centre and the main office were located in Bangunan Kopeda, Seksyen 8, Shah Alam. In 26 Aug 2003, centralization of all resource centers to Satellite Campus, Seksyen 7, Shah Alam. In 15 Sept 2003, UNISEL Library opened in Satellite Campus, Seksyen 7, Shah Alam. In 7 Mar 2006, UNISEL Library starts its first operation in Bestari Jaya Campus. VISION UNISEL Library will be delivering a more user-focussed and technologically sophisticated library services, designed to meet the contemporary information needs of a University. MISSION To provide the most effective university library service possible, in response to current and future users' needs. OBJECTIVES Strengthening collection development. To ensure that information matches with needs. Providing quality services that meet and exceed the expectations of a diverse user community. Selecting, acquiring, organizing, preserving, packaging and providing access to library materials and resources in a broad range of formats. Teaching information retrieval and evaluating using current and emerging technologies. Recognizing the importance of the library as place on a university campus with inviting, comfortable, secure and networked spaces for learning and research. 4

Ensuring quality service, consultation, and comprehensive reference services to students, faculties and clients. Creating an environment conducive to learning and research. Providing leadership in a variety of cooperative and reciprocal programs. Creating a climate where staff are approachable and users receive individual attention and a positive learning experience. Supporting professional development and training opportunities for library staff OPENING HOURS TIME DAY 8am-5pm Monday until Friday Saturday and Sunday Closed CORE VALUES UNISEL Library support and delivers the broad values and principles that shape and reinforce the University's work, as outlined in the University's Mission Statement. In addition, the Library values are: User-focused services. The privacy of our users. Encouraging student inquiry and scholarly research. The library as learning organization. Courteous, capable and responsive service. Ease of access to information and services. Being the vital part of the academic community. The wise application of information technology. Continuous improvement in the design and delivery of services and resources. Active innovation and incorporation of academic library best practices. Individual and team contribution from staff. Professionalism and pride in our work (deliverables). A commitment to our own growth and development. A comfortable, quiet, calm, safe and clean library environment. 5

2.0 POSITIVE ASPECT IN THE LIBRARY UNISEL Library has provided many type of facilities and services to attract students and academician come to their library and use all the accommodations to fulfil their need. All those facilities and services are really important in supporting the curriculum and to support faculty and student research. Here are the highlighted part of the facilities and what they have which be their positive aspect in the library. a) Locker room UNISEL Library provides storage lockers where customers only pay a deposit of RM2.00. The lockers are limited, customers need to register at the Circulation Counter. The lockers' room is located at Ground Floor. A fine will be incurred for late return, lost and damaged key/locker. The library has 90 key-lock compartments and 120 open compartments for student who need to keep their stuff. 6

b) Lounge area It is located at ground floor near the locker room. The lounge area is the ideal place to eat and drink also socialize. It contains one vending machine and casual seating. The interesting part of that is the librarians has recycled old book to support under the table in that area which is the best initiative to decorate this lounge. c) Children’s corner Special designed to help the children ages 3-12 in University community comprehend the world in which they live by providing suitable materials for them. Children’s corner located at the ground floor. 7

d) Leisure area UNISEL Library provided leisure area for the users reading in a comfortable ways. The benefits go far beyond simply enjoyment and amusement, to being an essential form of relaxation for some people, helping to relieve stress, providing a break from the pressures of everyday life, and assisting others with the treatment of an illness (Hayes & Morris, 2005). 8

e) Physical information signage UNISEL Library take advantage of every corner and space in the library by providing signage that contain information about the library to the users. This information is not only available on the library portal but also makes it easy for users to read it while in the library. 9

f) Old book exhibition UNISEL Library has a ground floor space that is decorated to show old books that have never been borrowed and are rarely read by users. This is because users may not be aware of the existence of this book so this initiative can encourage users to read the book. 10

g) Mini theatre UNISEL Library has mini theatre located at second floor. This mini theatre provided for the student and lecturer who want to conduct a class in library. h) Discussion room UNISEL Library has 3 discussion room located at second floor which provided for student. Student who want to book this room should have 3 to 5 members in order to get the permission for using this facility. 11

3.0 COMMENT AND SUGGESTION TO IMPROVE THE LIBRARY a) Parking area The UNISEL Library should provide covered parking. They provide lots of parking lots. However, when the weather is raining, library visitors have difficulty accessing the library entrance. In future, hopefully that the management can consider building a parking lots with covered. b) Library collection The collection in the library is quite old. Although there is a lot of collection but as a user, we would prefer new collections. Other than that, users such as student, lecturer, and even researcher want an up-to-date information. So, hopefully that the management can consider spend some money for the collection in the library. c) Library Staff Staff of the UNISEL Library should be more users friendly. The first thing to grab the user’s interest to come to the library is how the librarians and the staffs must be users friendly and know how to tackle their heart. They should fulfil the users need with any discrimination and bias. In our opinion, the librarian should monitor staff in order to achieve the user’s satisfaction. d) Lack of socket panel We think that the management should add more socket panel at the study area. This is because students nowadays do a lot of assignment n research not only use the collection in the library, but they also need to do their assignment using laptop. In order to stay do their assignment in the library for long period of time, they need to charge their devices. We suggest that the library should add more socket panel so that student could have a better facility and maybe it could increase the number of users come to the library. 12

e) Maintenance of facilities UNISEL Library have been operated over a decade and a lot of maintenance need to be done. There are some of the staircase at the relaxing area are crumble and that is dangerous for the users to use it. Hopefully that the management take this as a serious matter because it not only can cause harm to the users but also can ruined the reputation of the institution itself. 13

4.0 CONCLUSION In conclusion, planning and design of the library is very important to improve image and attract users to come to the library. Each library need to has smart planning policy to ensure that the organization will follow the mission and vision, user friendly and provide the ICT services that has modern technologies and good telecommunication which is more easy for operation and maintenance in the future. The University Selangor library has their own image and known by students due to the best services that provided and good strategic planning and design. The layouts of the building are arranged properly. It has a good air-conditioning, fresh and constant temperature and right humidity that suitable for user to come to this library. UNISEL library provide a comfort environment to the users in order to attract them to come and use the collection in the library. With the outstanding facilities and services that provided to the users, UNISEL has become a library that able to become the library word class in the future that not only provide the materials to the users but also become a place that able to fulfil user’s need. However, there are a few aspects that library should improve to give better services to the user in the future. Planning is fundamentally an intellectually an intellectual process and a mental predisposition to do things in the orderly way to think before acting and to act in the light of facts rather than guess. It is the antithesis of the gambling, the speculative tendency in planning the library for users. UNISEL library has include this section to develop and organize the library so that other libraries will make the positive aspect of UNISEL library as an example to plan and design a library in the future. Each library should concern with the long-term direction of an organization. Library organization must ensure that the mission and vision of the library can be achieved and established. 14
