ABOUT ANIMAHENASYON In an effort to build an audience, awareness and development of original contents, ACPI organizes an annual animation festival called Animahenasyon that showcases original Filipino animated works of both aspiring and professional animators in the country through a competition. Also part of the festival is the animation conference, art workshops, exhibition screening featuring animation works from other countries, exhibits and other side activities. Animahenasyon is the Filipino equivalent of animagination, as a result of combining the words “animation” and “imagination” (imahenasyon). It is also about the image (imahe) that we want to portray as a nation (nasyon) of animators to the world. But Animahenasyon is more than just a showcase of what the Filipino animators can do. It is really a harvest (ani) of the Filipino talent and creativity. It is a celebration of the Philippine animation industry. Animahenasyon aims to serve as the venue to showcase, both domestically and internationally, Flipino talent in the area of animation. Likewise, it aims to promote collaboration among all industry stakeholders, networking among international guest animators, among others. Animahenasyon serves as a venue for animation professionals and enthusiasts to present their world-class ideas and showcase their talents both locally and internationally. The festival opens doors of opportunities and provides a chance for the artists to meet and be inspired by the finest names in the industry. Likewise, Animahenasyon promotes collaboration among all industry stakeholders and networking among international guest animators, among others. Animahenasyon aims to: 1. Give further progress to the growth of Philippine animation industry and its contributions to the global animation industry. 2. Have access to locally produced animation content for promotion in animation markets here and abroad to showcase the talent of the Filipinos. 3. Encourage potential talents to explore the many career opportunities available in the industry and hone their skills through competition. 4. Provide a venue for exchange among animators, producers, industry sup- porters, investors, stakeholders and other possible business networking, and matching opportunities. 5

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES My warmest greetings to the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) as it holds its Animahenasyon 2017: 11th Philippine Animation Festival. I laud ACPI for its contributions in the development of modern visual culture and the advancement of the local animation industry. By showcasing the original works of both aspiring and professional animators, we can ensure greater awareness of the sector and cultivate homegrown talent. I trust that this festival will inspire and motivate budding artists and animators to pursue their dreams. May this lead to the further evolution and growth of the animation industry so that we can open new opportunities for our countrymen. Together, let us harness the skills and talents of our people towards nation-building. May you have a meaningful and productive event. M A N I L A 11 November 2017 11

A MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR We have witnessed the first decade of Animahenasyon, and now we are facing a new set of challenges ahead. This sounds like an endless cycle of struggles that we, the Animation Council of the Philippines, have faced with and lived to survive. Well it is true. Animahenasyon have gone thru many stages for the past few years, so does our industry. It has evolved, and will continue to do so no matter what. Despite the fact, Animahenasyon will continue to aspire to be the beacon of light in the sea of change, but will never lose sight of its objective - to build an audience, awareness and development of original contents. This year’s Animahenasyon we celebrate diversity. Topics ranging from Virtual Reality (VR) to sequential art, choreography and technology installations, millennial artists and women animators all transformative elements that enrich the scope of animation. These are just some of the manifestation of ever-changing development that is happening to animation at this very moment. We also have an exciting program of animated films both long and short form. Highlights of these are Makoto Shinkai’s “Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name),” Sebastien Laudenbach’s “La Jeune fille sans mais (The Girl without Hands),” and the Tricky Women’s “Turbulente Zeiten & vertraute Orte (Turbulent Times & Familiar Places)” short films. On our own original content, we have of course the 25 finalists, and a special program honouring our women animators. As we experience all of these to our enrichment, we will be rewarded with a breath-taking indication of the possibilities of what lies ahead. We have the opportunity to improve our industry. Doors are opening. If our goal to succeed is mired with doubt then we have to shake off that uncertainty, and take a risk in order for us to enter that door and to see what’s on the other side. We have to take chances. We have to do what’s right to forge on with our mission or else we don’t exist. Failure and success goes hand in hand. This is what life is all about. If we lose and fail in our journey, then we must rise up, learn, have a positive attitude, and just keep on moving forward. Have a leap of faith from where you stand! 12

A MESSAGE FROM THE EMBASSY OF FRANCE LAURENT LEGODEC Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Bravo ! Congratulations for this 11th edition of Animahenasyon! The French Embassy has been supporting the Animation Council of the Philippines from the beginning, and the very first Philippine animation festival was held fol- lowing your very first visit to Annecy, and it featured Filipino and French animated films side-by-side! 2017 marks a special year as we celebrate 70 years of Franco-Philippine diplomatic relations, but moreover, it is the year that the Philippines first offi- cially participated in the International Animation Film Festival and Market in Annecy, with the support of the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the French Embassy, as well as the first time that Filipino films were included in the program of the Festival du Cinéma d’Animation organized by the Association Française du Cinéma d’Animation, AFCA, the French counterpart of ACPI. Together with the continued Philippine presence at the MIPCOM in Cannes, Philippine animation shall be promoted to international markets and find commercial and economic partners in France, Europe and the rest of the world. Meanwhile, Animahenasyon provides a driving force for the local animation industry, showcasing competing works from both professional and student animators, alongside a selection of international films that can serve as in- spiration to the new generation of animators and studios. The French Em- bassy is happy to share a selection of films courtesy of the Institut Français, the AFCA, and French animation schools for the enjoyment of the festival audience. Looking forward, the Embassy of France will facilitate exchanges between the ACPI and the Network of French Animation Schools (Réseau des Ecoles du Cinéma d’Animation, RECA) in order to offer a scholarship program, to- gether with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), that will assure competency training for Filipino instructors and students of animation to elevate the level of skills in the industry. A cooperation agreement between France and the Philippines is underway for the development and promotion of the creative industries. In the meantime, let us enjoy the films! 15

ANIMAHENASYON, THEN AND NOW by Teddy Co, 2017 jury member, NCAA Commissioner for the Arts Ten years ago, I was invited by Ricky Orellana to be part of the final judging committee of the first ever ANIMAHENASYON Film Festival. The thing I remember very distinctly was that one of my fellow jurors, a cantankerous although amiable German who had been a veteran animator at Walt Disney Studios kept on complaining about the low overall quality of those pioneer entries. Although I did not fully agree with his views then, I admitted to myself that animation as an art form still had some ways to go in this country, even as some professionals had been outsourced to do foreign-looking animation content for American and Japanese companies. I’ve forgotten the names of my colleagues on that first set of jurors for the first festival, but we were like planners sifting through silt to recover some slivers of gold dust or pellets, if there were any at all. Fortunately we hit pay dirt, in the two films of Nelson ‘Blog’ Caliguia, Jr., which we gave the grand prize to. His films, Doodle of Doom and Inday Wanda, not only used local subject matter, but were trying to develop a distinctly Filipino aesthetic in its use of animation. Fast forward to ten years later, on Oct. 28, to be exact. Ricky Orellana invites me to be on the jury again, this time for the 11th edition of ANIMAHENASYON. Here I am with my two fellow jury members, Avic IIagan and Sigmund Lambrento, sifting through dozens of titles, divided into professional and student categories. Same procedure, but without the cantankerous ex-Disney animator bellowing out his low opinions of each film. But had he been present with us, he would have been astonished at the high quality and sheer diversity of styles of the films, which came from different parts of the Philippines. In the past ten years, ANIMAHENASYON has created a competitive platform for Filipino animators to develop and evolve their art, and to keep up with what’s happening in the animation scene, both locally and internationally. It has helped create standards that students and young professionals can look up to for guidance and inspiration. Its parent organization, the Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI) has networked with local outsourcing companies and various schools to promote animation not just as an industry, but as an art form. Through the festival, it is branching out into areas where animation will be playing an important facet, like in video gaming, art installations, and virtual reality. But in the long term, the works presented need to be properly disseminated, so that eventually, the films made by artists like Blog Caliguia, Roxlee, Ellen Ramos, Ramon del Prado, Kenny Tai, Antonio Cadiz, Arnold Arre, etc., become as known and recognizable as those of Walt Disney, Hayao Miyazaki, or Jan Svankmajer. Looking forward to another ten years of ANIMAHENASYON! 22

FINAL JURY TEDDY CO Teddy Co has been a cultural worker in Philippine cinema the past 30 years. As film archivist, he has recovered and gotten restored important films by National Artists, including the first animated Filipino full-length film TADHANA (by Nonoy Marcelo), having dubbed it in betamax when it had its first and only screening on Philippine television in 1978. As curator, he has organized centennial retrospectives for important Filipino filmmakers. He has been on the selection committees of local independent film festivals, including Cinemalaya, Cinema One Originals, and QCinema. Since 2004, he has been a member of the Cinema Committee of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). In 2008, he co-founded Cinema Rehiyon, the largest annual gathering of film and filmmakers from the different provinces of the country. He is currently the Chairman of the Cinema Committee of the NCCA, and it’s Commissioner for the Arts. MARIA VICTORIA ILAGAN Prior to pursuing a career as an independent filmmaker, Avic spent eighteen years as a theater artist of PETA doing production design, marketing and promotion, cultural research, facilitating workshops and eventually doing lead and support roles. Her films “Ang Babae Kapag Nag-iisa sa Maynila (A Woman Alone in Manila), “Dancing In The Light,” and “Sowing Seeds” have been screened internationally. She has won several awards for her documentaries and short feature films at the Gawad CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video in 1995, 1996 & 1997. She works in various projects (video, events and workshops) with migrant groups in Manila, Hong Kong and Japan. She has directed a number of drama teleplays and television shows aired on national television. The last one of which is 3R (Respect, Relax & Respond), a tele magazine show for women. She is the Managing Partner/Director of black soup café + art space. She is currently active as a facilitator in the advocacy of promoting positive discipline under PETA’s Arts Zone Project (Advocate Rights to Safety Zone). 23
