Unity Day, Student Diversity LeadershipConference, and Diversity/Inclusion WorkshopsMembers of faculty at unity day: Ms.Wesley, Mr. Lapolla, Mrs. Osquist, Mrs.Charlier, Mrs. Fuller “On Severn’s inaugural Unity Day, which was held on the first of February, I sat in on “Gender in Media and Society: a Walk and Talk,” a presentation that was organized by the SWAG club. The focus of this presentation seemed primarily to be on spreading awareness for difficulties and injustices that many females in the world face today. SWAG club also dedicated some time to analyzing the media’s influence on some of these difficulties. After the presentation, the media’s role in proliferating immoral actions committed against women was clear. The presentation given by the SWAG club was an excellent way to begin the conversation about gender equality at Severn.” -Jack Wellschlager ‘19 Middle, Yasmeen Meek ‘18, Marah Vain-Callahan ‘19, Ms. Straub, Mr. Kraut, Annie Right, Bennett ‘19, Courtney Freeman ‘18, Gabby Ciraolo ‘18 and Bottom Right: Students attending the Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference Jared Dove ‘18, Unity Day Facilitators The BSDLC is an annual Morgan Skinner ‘19, Courtney gathering in which Severn Freeman ‘18, Quinn Roes ‘19 School sends a handful of representatives to engage in208 honest conversations about educational equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Cast dressed up in costume. This past winter, the Water Street Players took the stage for the production, “Charlie Chaplin.” Dancing, singing, acting - you name it... It was all there, right before your eyes. Twenty-nine students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, worked tirelessly for three months to bring this amazing production to life at Severn. Putting on a show, especially at this caliber, was extremely demand- ing, with long after-school rehearsals and weekend practices. In an interview with Trevor Marvin ‘18, he captures the truly unique atmosphere of the cast in saying, “I loved being able to bond with people with different interests of all ages. It didn’t matter who you were, we were all part of a bigger family.” The cast of Charlie Chaplin was brought together by their drive to pull off this show. Sam Agro ‘18 (Charlie Chaplin) describes the challenges of the musical by explaining that “The most difficult part was all the technical stuff like music and dancing.” He also noted that when reminiscing on the show, his favorite aspect of the musical was “getting close to everyone in the face of adversity.” It took countless hours to memorize lines, choreography, pitch, and sound among other aspects. Mr. Giddings (director) held the cast to an extremely high standard when selecting a show that has never before been put on by a high school. Everett Cortés ‘18 Elizabeth Barroll ‘21, Matthew Beagan ‘20and Jacob Perreten ‘18 Megan Mohr ‘20 and Meghan Chu ‘19He put all of his trust in his students and was not disappointed with their performance. He even received severalcomplimentary emails saying thing like, “ The show was just fantastic! Not only was it visually stunning, and beautifullydirected, and musically sound... but it made me feel something...laugh, cry, and believe in a character and communitythat grew to fame almost 100 years ago... and that’s what theater is all about.” As one can tell, directing this show, whileit yielded an exceptional show, came with several challenges as a director. As Mr. Giddings said, “ Every show is chal-lenging in some way, but Chaplin was different, because there were no resources of how other schools pared down theBroadway-style sets and costumes to the high school level. This was freeing in a way as well though, because everythingcould be uniquely ours without any preconceived notions by audiences of ‘how it’s always done.’”-Mallory Gersh ‘19 Yasmeen Meek ‘18 and Sean Ward ‘24 Mallory Gersh ‘19 211

Musician in Ball in the House performs for all the upper school students. This year’s Dillon Moran Musician-in-Residence pro- Matthew Beagan ‘20gram brought the five-member, Boston-based vocalgroup Ball in the House to Severn School. Wallace,Ben, Monty, Dave, and Jon enlightened us with theirbeat boxing and harmonizing specialties and showedus how to come together through music. Upper schoolstudents and faculty first met Ball in the House atmorning meeting, where they performed cover songssuch as “Jealous” by Nick Jonas and “Blank Space” byTaylor Swift. The sound they created could easily bemistaken for a full chorus and band. We were simplyamazed at their abilities to create the songs we alllisten to on the radio to life using only their vocaltalents. Greg DiMario ‘19, Jake Van Giesen ‘20,I had the opportunity to sit in on the vocalist master Will McCollum ‘19class, watch my fellow peers sing unaccompanied, andhear the members of Ball in the House give advice. After several performances, the group’s beat-boxer,Jon Ryan, stopped to say, “How come you have allthese great singers in this school?” Jon’s genuinecompliment made those of us in the audience feeleven more connected to them, as he seemed to reallyrespect Severn’s musicians. Whether we were on stageor in the audience, Ball in the House appreciated usand taught us how to find the power of togethernessin music.214

Sam Agro ‘18 performs in front of students andparents. After the vocalist master class, I attended Ball in the House’s open Jake Wilson ‘18 plays therehearsal with Severn School’s Vocal Ensemble. They were rehearsing saxophone.Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” with Vocal Ensemble joining the acappella group. The sound of those on stage was nearly perfect afterthe first run through, but Ball in the House was looking for moreenergy from the singers. They asked people in the audience, includ-ing me, to join them on stage to dance and liven up the performance.Ball in the House was able to transform the energy in the room, andthey reminded us that even the most talented singers can benefitfrom the liveliness of the crowd. By the end of the rehearsal, everyonein Price auditorium was dancing, singing, and laughing.Ball in the House brought the spirit of the Dillon MoranMusician-in-Residence to Severn School. They reminded us that musicshould be celebrated by everyone and can bring us all together.#unityArticle by Josie Formica ‘18Yasmeen Meek ‘18 Mr. Redei and a Ball in the House MemberWill Barroll ‘18, Burt Gesner ‘18, Simon Isper ‘18,Brendan Kennedy ‘20 Residence 215
