Centre for Business and Society (CBS), LUMS About CBS: The Centre for Business and Society (CBS), housed at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), is a multidisciplinary, inclusive and responsive platform that brings efforts and conversations at the intersection of business and society onto a wider stage of influence. CBS fosters knowledge exchange between a diverse set of audience to collaborate and work towards a collective goal: rethinking the role of businesses for sustainable societies. To achieve this, the centre brings forth a spectrum of activities which ranges from trainings, conferences, edutainment events and student competitions to policy discussions, debates and speaker sessions. CBS’ blueprint draws largely from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the 17 Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) that lie at its heart. Ethics, collective awareness and social responsibility are the underlying themes for all the centre’s activities. The centre’s thematic areas include cross cutting themes of education, gender, sustainability, diversity, inclusiveness, health, governance, public policy, micro/social entrepreneurship and capacity building and equal access for all.

CBS Activities in Academic Year 2020-21: • Date: March to November 2020 Gender Inclusive Sourcing Initiative The Gender Inclusive Sourcing Initiative was a joint collaboration between CBS, WEConnect International and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS). The aim of this initiative was to immerse women in the local Pakistan supply chain and successfully increase local, regional and global business opportunities for women-owned businesses (WOB) by connecting them with buyers, including heads of supply chains of large corporations and government agencies. As part of the wider initiative, two surveys targeting WOBs and buyers were developed to help understand the current sourcing situation in Pakistan and the challenges and opportunities on both the supply side and the demand side of WOB. CBS played an important role during the survey phase of this initiative by translating surveys into Urdu to increase their accessibility in Pakistan. CBS engaged the LUMS Literary Society for this translation project.

Following translation efforts, over a period of a few weeks, 45 buyer responses and 75 WOB responses were collected. CBS led the analysis of the collected responses by engaging Dr. Shakeel Sadiq Jajja and Dr. Hassan Rauf from SDSB, LUMS as consultants who analyzed the data and organised the survey findings in a report. This report will be part of a wider report which will be published by WEConnect International. The findings of the report produced by CBS will also contribute to the content development of modules for virtual workshops on “Women Empowerment in Supply Chains in Pakistan” and creating pledges for buyers to source from WOBs, which will contribute to increased gender-inclusive sourcing and have a positive impact on women empowerment in Pakistan. As part of the partnership, on November 20, 2020, CBS attended a Global Entrepreneurship Week virtual event on 'Advancing Women’s Entrepreneurship and Supplier Diversity' hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan and the U.S.-Pakistan Women’s Council (USPWC). The event followed the launch of the Women's Business Opportunity Initiative, a movement to increase inclusive and competitive supply chains in Pakistan. The event brought together WEConnect International workshop participants, members of the USPWC, and other relevant buyer representatives, women business owners, representatives of chambers of commerce and industry groups, and Embassy and State Department officials. The event featured a section titled 'Women’s Entrepreneurship and Supplier Diversity: Research Findings' in which Henna Babar Ali highlighted the findings of the report produced by CBS. Dr. Farhat Haq, Provost LUMS, was also a part of this section of the event and highlighted the various initiatives that LUMS has taken as part of its institutional commitment to gender equity.

• Date: October 29, 2020 Ananke’s The Girl Summit On October 29, 2020, CBS partnered with UAE based organisation, Ananke, on The Girl Summit 2020. The virtual summit commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child with the theme 'My Voice, Our Equal Future' and featured more than 75 guest speakers from around the world. The summit featured keynote speeches by Dr. Jawad Syed and Farah Ahamed, panel sessions by Dr. Faiza Ali, Dr. Hadia Majid, Gulalai Khan and Neemah Ahamad, fireside chats with Dr. Tayyaba Tamim and Dr. Ayra Indrias Patras, and workshops by Angbeen Atif Mirza and Marva Khan. The topics discussed in these sessions ranged from gender equality, period poverty, gender sensitivity, challenging social norms, innovation and emerging tech, privilege, agency, decision making in the context of gender equality, identifying barriers to girls’ education and harnessing the power of data to empower girls.

• Date: January 29, 2021 Virtual Forum: Why Think Tanks Matter in Times of Crisis On January 29, 2021, CBS hosted a virtual forum on \"Why Think Tanks Matter in Times of Crisis\". This event took place after the 2021 global virtual forum on the same topic, which was organized by the University of Pennsylvania's Think Tanks & Civil Societies Program (TTCSP). CBS is a part of the University of Pennsylvania's global network of think tanks and wanted to continue the global conversation in Pakistan by engaging local experts in a discussion on the value and importance of think tanks. CBS' co-host for this virtual forum was the Centre for Public Policy and Governance (CPPG), FCC. The forum panel included experts from diverse institutions who shared their insights on the role of think tanks in Pakistan and academia while considering a range of political, societal, developmental and economic contexts. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Shakeel Sadiq Jajja

from LUMS and featured Dr. Syed Zahoor Hassan and Dr. Ghazal Mir Zulfiqar from LUMS, Dr. Saeed Shafqat, Dr. Rabia Chaudhry, Ms. Saba Shahid and Mr. Raheem ul Haque from CPPG, Mr. Mosharraf Zaidi from TabadLab, Dr. Rabia Akhtar from the University of Lahore, Dr. Azeem Ali Shah from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Ms. Mehreen Shahzad from WWF-Pakistan. • Date: February 17, 2021 Virtual Panel Session: Be Kind to Your Mind: Strategies for Coping with Stress During COVID-19 On February 17, 2021, CBS organized a virtual session, \"Be Kind to Your Mind: Strategies for Coping with Stress During COVID-19\" in collaboration with LUMS Counselling & Psychological Services (CAPS), Psychology at LUMS. The on-going pandemic has had an impact on people’s mental health with increasing levels of stress being one of the most pressing mental health issues. CBS aimed to help people of all age

groups and especially students by raising awareness and sharing information on how to cope with stress in these unprecedented times. The session included a panel discussion between Ms. Rebbia Shahab (School Psychologist at Haque Academy) and Ms. Tajdar Zahra (Psychologist at Hello Tabeeb) on how to identify and cope with stress during the pandemic, followed by a presentation by Ms. Nazish Shekha (Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Excellence in Responsible Business (CERB)) on good practices for students to maintain a work-life balance after graduation. The session was moderated by Ms. Nida Zafar (Senior Student Counselor at CAPS, LUMS). • Date: March 15 to 19, 2021 Training Session on Program and Project Management: Monitoring and Evaluation Perspective From March 15 to 19, 2021, CBS conducted trainings for 22 officers of the Merged Areas, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, under the Governance and Policy Project (GPP) of P&D Department Merged Areas. The objectives of these trainings was to build the capacity of the planning and development staff working at the secretariat and district level.

Dr. Anjum Fayyaz, Dr. Shakeel Sadiq Jajja and Dr. Syed Aun Raza Rizvi from SDSB, LUMS were the teaching faculty for this five-day training programme. On the last day, Mr. Amer Sultan Tareen, Secretary Planning & Development Department, KP and Mr. Syed Zahir Ali Shah, Director General PCNA were chief guests and attended the presentations given by the participants of this programme. • Date: March 2021 – ongoing StEP: CBS Social Impact Fund 2021 The CBS Social Impact Fund 2021 is an on-going student competition that will fund student-led projects and initiatives that aim to create social impact. The objective of this competition is to engage students of LUMS and encourage innovative thinking for impactful social change. A

panel of expert judges will select the most impactful interventions and winners will be awarded seed money to scale up their existing projects or pilot their ideas. Previous CBS Activities in Academic Year 2019-20: • Date: January 21, 2019 Inauguration of the Centre for Business and Society and play by Ajoka Theatre The Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) inaugurated the Centre for Business and Society (CBS) on the January 21, 2019. The event marked the evolution of CBS from the Centre for Governance and Public Management (CGPM). As a means of showcasing commitment to social issues and immediate action, CBS commemorated its inauguration alongside the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Human Rights Day with a play entitled “Barri” by the Ajoka Theatre.

• Date: April 26, 2019 Edutainment Event - It’s Everyone’s Business, Period: Health, Hygiene and the Menstrual Taboo CBS collaborated with SAMAAJ on an “edu-tainment” event on April 26, 2019 which fostered a positive discussion on menstrual health issues along with the social and economic implications of period poverty. The speakers of the event included Farah Ahamed, Feryal Ali Gauhar and Baela Raza Jamil who engaged with the issue of menstrual health through dignified and insightful speeches. CBS bridged several panelists including young entrepreneurs from ReCircle, Femkins, HerGround and Girlythings, along with Mira Hashmi from the Lahore School of Economics and renowned activist, Jalvat Ali, from the Labour Education Foundation. Dr. Ayesha Masood, an Assistant professor at SDSB, moderated this power panel.

• Date: April 30, 2019 Role of Women in the Workplace: A Talk by the Dutch Ambassador Ms. Ardi Stoios-Braken Ms. Ardi Stoios-Braken, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Netherlands to Pakistan, attended an event hosted by CBS and SDSB at LUMS on April 30, 2019, an event that exhibits the Centre’s global outreach. The ambassador shared her views on the education system serving as an equalizer against gender inequality She also spoke about the importance of vocational training as a tool to increase employment opportunities

• Date: May 6, 2019 Haleeb Foods CEO visit to LUMS CBS and SDSB hosted Mr. Memosh Khawaja, CEO Haleeb Foods and Vice President of the Pakistan Dairy Association, at LUMS for a talk on the growth potential in the Dairy Industry and the opportunities in the sector for young professionals and entrepreneurs. Memosh Khawaja earned an MBA degree from LUMS in 1993. Prior to joining Haleeb Foods, he led Henkel, Germany Laundry and Home Care Division’s global financial steering of worth €5 billion. As CEO Henkel Middle East, he successfully transformed the business from loss to doubling the revenue and exceeding global profitability standard. With 25 years of professional experience in global corporations Mr. Khawaja’s long-term goal is to make a significant professional and social contribution in the developing world. During the session, Mr. Khawaja shared his views on the substantial growth potential in the processed milk industry. He gave insights into the role Haleeb Foods is playing in providing farmer development services, building local industry capacity, and enhancing quality standards. The talk was followed by a Q&A session with faculty, staff and students. The speaker and the audience of the session discussed the importance of transforming perceptions within the diary sector, and the critical role of regulations and polices to regulate the sector and achieve higher growth.

• Spring Semester 2019 StEP: Annual Public Policy & Governance Student Competition 2019 CBS held its first Annual Public Policy & Governance Student Competition in Spring Semester 2019. This competition gave students across LUMS the opportunity to present their research in support of a policy change in one of the following three thematic areas: Gender Inclusion, Institutional/Governance Reforms and Social Policy (Education, Health, Poverty Eradication). Monetary awards of PKR 25,000 were awarded to the best three briefs/articles selected by CBS’ expert panel. • Date: June to August 2019 StEP: MOOC Summer Internship Programme CBS' MOOC Summer Internship programme was a 3-month long internship from June 2019 to August 2019. Under the supervision of Mr. Zeeshan Hasan, Adjunct Faculty SDSB, the interns worked on the development of an Online Teacher Professional Development (TPD) model. This innovative redesigning of the teaching and learning experience at LUMS strives to create positive implications in the growing domain of distance learning by offering personalized study plans and mastery of levels and making education accessible to a wider variety of people.

• StEP: Dolphin Squad Project Internship by Dr. Mohsin Bashir In summer 2019, LUMS students interned at the Dolphin Police Headquarters in Lahore under the guidance of Dr. Mohsin Bashir, Assistant Professor at Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB, LUMS) and Mr. Bilal Zafar, SP Dolphin Squad Lahore. The Dolphin Force Internship Programme was a six-week long project internship in the fields of HR and Marketing. The HR interns worked closely with the administrative staff at the Dolphin Headquarters and performed a detailed analysis on the use of resources. The Marketing interns were responsible for creating a PR strategy for the social media platforms of the Dolphin Force.

• Date: September 2019 to March 2020 StEP: CBS Ambassadors for Change Programme 2019 - 2020 On September 4, 2019, CBS signed an MoU with The Citizens Foundation (TCF) to mark the beginning of a first-of-its kind collaboration between TCF and CBS. Under this collaboration, TCF and CBS agreed to facilitate the admission of meritorious TCF Alumni in tertiary institutions by engaging LUMS students are volunteer teachers. This was to ensure that maximum efforts will be put in every year to help prepare a good number of meritorious TCF Alumni for admission in the top undergraduate degree programmes in Pakistan, including LUMS. The CBS Ambassadors for Change Programme was officially launched on September 20, 2019. CBS organized a fun and interactive orientation session in which Dr. Zehra Waheed, Director CBS, the CBS team and the student volunteers (CBS Ambassadors) of this programme interacted with the students that they will be teaching during this 6-month-long programme. From September 2019 to March 2020, CBS Ambassadors from across all schools of LUMS conducted English and Mathematics classes for a cohort of 50 TCF alumni on the weekends. The model of the programme included interactive class activities and periodic assessment tools to gauge student performance. In January 2020, CBS also collaborated with Shehri Pakistan and Chiraagh to conduct two interesting sessions for the TCF students to add value to the CBS Ambassadors for Change programme. The session by Shehri Pakistan was an interactive crash course on government structures which was designed to increase students’ awareness about their fundamental rights as citizens of Pakistan. This informative session was followed by a series of fun activities planned by the Chiraagh team which imparted valuable lessons on the importance of teamwork and creativity. Along with assisting TCF students with their university applications, the purpose of this programme was to give LUMS students the opportunity to learn, engage and respond to problems being faced by fractions of the marginalized community that surrounds them.

• Date: September 20, 2019 Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Older Persons in Pakistan: A Talk by Dr. Asghar Zaidi To commemorate World Alzheimer's Day 2019 on September 20, 2019, CBS, with the support of faculty leads Dr. Muhammad Ahsan Rana and Dr. Sameen Zafar, organized a talk on Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Older Persons in Pakistan by Dr. Asghar Zaidi. Dr. Zaidi, who is a celebrated Professor of Social Gerontology at Seoul National University, South Korea and Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, UK, gave the talk and presented the findings of his report titled ‘Moving from the Margins: Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Older Persons in Pakistan’. This report was drawn from a project commissioned by the Research, Evaluation, and Monitoring Unit (REMU) of British Council Islamabad.

• Date: October to November 2019 StEP: CBS and PhotoLUMS Photography Competition: Click for Change 2019 - 2020 Following CBS’ mandate of ethics and social responsibility and its focus on wider student engagement at LUMS, CBS is holding its first Photography Competition in collaboration with the LUMS Photographic Society. The theme of this year’s photography competition was Inclusiveness. By encouraging students to capture moments that reflect instances and issues with inclusiveness in our society, CBS hoped to create lasting change while inspiring students to explore this topic in a creative manner. A panel comprising of CBS affiliated faculty members and professional photographers judged the entries and seven winners were selected and awarded a cash prize of PKR 7000 each.

• Date: October 23, 2019 Talk by Dr. Peter Lund-Thomsen titled “What is Behind the Label? Ethics and Cultural Challenges in Fieldwork” On October 23, 2019, CBS and Dr. Ghazal Mir Zulfiqar, Director PhD Program, organized a talk for PhD candidates at SDSB. The talk was delivered by Dr. Thomsen who is a Professor of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability in Developing Countries at the Copenhagen Business School. Dr. Syed Zahoor Hassan, Professor SDSB, SDSB PhD candidates and the CBS team attended the talk. Dr. Thomsen discussed changing global production trends and their implications for South Asian countries including Pakistan. The discussion was followed by an interactive session where Dr. Thomsen and the PhD candidates discussed ethics and cultural challenges associated with primary research and fieldwork.

• Date: October 25, 2019 CBS and SDSB PINKtober 2019: Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign To commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, CBS and SDSB collaborated with Pink Ribbon Pakistan to organize a panel discussion on October 25, 2019. The event was attended by Vice Chancellor LUMS, Dr. Arshad Ahmad and Honorary Dean SDSB, Dr. Alnoor Bhimani, as well as students and faculty members from LUMS. LUMS faculty, Dr. Faiza Ismail, set the stage for a powerful conversation around this critical issue and moderated the panel discussion. Panel members included Mr. Omer Aftab, CEO Pink Ribbon, Dr. Huma Majeed, a senior breast surgeon, and Ms. Silwat Zafar, a passionate educator and cancer survivor. The talk was followed by a ceremonial walk led by Dr. Alnoor Bhimani, Dr. Farah Ahamed and Mr. Omer Aftab. As part of the campaign, CBS volunteers also conducted a three-day long fundraising drive on campus from October 23 to 25 to raise funds for Pink Ribbon Pakistan.

• November to December 2019 StEP: CBS Project Internship in collaboration with LUMS Society of Professional Accountancy (LSPA) In November 2019, CBS collaborated with the LUMS Society of Professional Accountancy (LSPA) to recruit a project intern for the CBS Digital Library Portal. • Date: November 13, 2019 StEP: CBS and LUMS Environmental Action Forum (LEAF) panel talk on Toxic Air: A Climate Emergency On November 13, 2019, The Centre for Business and Society (CBS), in collaboration with the LUMS Environmental Action Forum (LEAF), organized a panel talk on smog awareness and the current air pollution crisis in the country. The talk was moderated by Mr. Dawar Nauman Butt (Public Policy consultant and Air Quality Data Analyst). The panelists included Mr. Abid Omar (Founder Pakistan Air Quality Initiative), Ms. Tabitha Spence (an academic and climate activist) and Dr. Zulfiqar Mir (Geriatrician and Palliative Care Specialist with a special interest in Public Health).

DIG Akbar Nasir Khan, COO Punjab Safe Cities Authority attended the talk as a chief guest. Other attendees included LUMS faculty members, students, staff and industry experts from outside LUMS. • Date: November 28, 2019 SDSB Book Store Launch A glimpse into the life and thoughts of Mrs. Perwin Ali was the highlight at the launch of her autobiographical book, A Free Spirit, held at the Suleman Dawood School of Business, LUMS on Thursday, November 28, 2019. The book launch was organized by Centre for Business and Society. It was preceded by a ribbon cutting ceremony for the LUMS Bookstore on the ground floor of the Suleman Dawood School of Business. Mr. Syed Babar Ali, Founder and Pro-Chancellor LUMS, and Mrs. Perwin Ali, inaugurated the bookstore that will stock publications across a range of topics, including Pakistani history, arts and literature, and is open for the entire LUMS community. The ceremony was attended by members of the LUMS Management Committee, Vice Chancellor LUMS Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Honorary Dean Suleman Dawood School of Business Dr. Alnoor Bhimani, Mr. and Mrs. Ali’s family, and members of the LUMS community.

In a befitting tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Ali’s continued patronage of arts and culture in Pakistan, the launch was followed by an enthralling classical musical performance by award winning vocalist, Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan. • Date: December 14, 2019 Pakistani Voices from the Margin: Panel Talk on Religious Diversity and Gospel Concert by the Leo Twins On December 14, 2019, The Centre for Business and Society (CBS) at the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), organized a panel talk titled “Pakistani Voices from the Margin”. The event commenced with Dr. Zehra Waheed, Director CBS, talking about the importance of interfaith dialogue at SDSB. This was followed by a presentation by Dr. Jawad Syed, Professor SDSB. Dr. Zain ul Abdin Khawaja, Assistant Professor SDSB and Director Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC) moderated the talk, focusing on themes of religious diversity and inclusivity. The panel of experts included Mr. Asif Aqeel, Ms. Jennifer Jeevan, Ms. Ayra Indrias and Dr. Kalyan Singh. The panel talk was followed by a musical performance by the Leo Twins.

• Date: January 31, 2020 “Communicating with Confidence” Workshop for Women@LUMS On January 31, 2020, CBS in collaboration with the MBA Placement Office, SDSB, and Bain & Co organized an interactive workshop for Women@LUMS titled “Communicating with Confidence”. The session was led by a team from Bain&Co as a part of their Women@Bain initiative. The workshop was premised on the fact that men and women have different traits that have an impact on their communication effectiveness and how women can demonstrate and convey confidence by utilizing certain techniques and tools. The session was open exclusively to female students, creating a safe space in which they were encouraged to honestly speak about their personal experiences and challenges with communication in the public sphere such as the classroom and the workplace.

• Date: March 6, 2020 Celebration of International Women’s Day: Musical Performance by Ustad Shahbaz Hussain and Zayn Mohammed On March 6, 2020, CBS and SDSB, in collaboration with the UK-based QalandarArts, organized a musical evening to celebrate International Women's Day. Dr. Zehra Waheed, Director CBS, welcomed the guests and spoke about the International Women’s Day 2020 campaign theme, #EachforEqual. Dr. Arshad Ahmed, Vice Chancellor LUMS, also addressed the guests and spoke about the importance of this day. Mr. Hassan Khan, Founder QalandarArts, introduced the artists and officially opened the floor for the performance. The musical performance featured the renowned tabla master, Ustad Shahbaz Hussain and the multi-instrumentalist, Zayn Mohammed in a unique fusion and blending of genres.

• Date: March 13 to 20, 2020 Export Managers Advanced Training CBS, in collaboration with the Habib Foundation and University of Leipzig, Germany, organized an Export Managers Advanced Training (EMAT), scheduled to take place from March 13 to 20, 2020 at SDSB, LUMS. This training was meant for the benefit of Pakistani SMEs, entrepreneurs and managers entailing International Business Development training modules designed by the University of Leipzig faculty. This training also consisted of a Train-the-Trainer element in which faculty members from LUMS were engaged for the future sustainability of the training programme. The six-day training programme comprised of two modules of three days each. As the COVID-19 situation evolved nation-wide, the first half of this training was successfully completed at LUMS, while the remaining modules were conducted online after the university closed down till further notice.
