176 MOTHER Mother rises early - she cooks rice and the fish; .. Again it is time for the fields. By day and by night she is hoping anew, Like the golden rays in the sky. Mother's son has gone learning in Town! Mother's eyes looked with love, on that day of Good-bye. But what sorrow she suffers and care for her son far away. On the day when the learning is over: Mother's eyes will then look filled with pride. Child, don't be spoiled by those people in Town! And come back to this village of yours. Mother's eyes are the sign of this hope in her soul, Till the long months are past, and the wandering child has come home... But a curtain of clouds dims sadly the eye: Will the starling no more seek his nest? Day in and day out Mother stays without sleep, Longs for his return to the field. Mother rises early- she cooks rice and the fish; She looks as the sun begins shining; And again she is off for the fields. Day and night she keeps hope in her heart; She will hope to the very last day. She will wait till the end of her days; Is it then that she will see her child? 177 THE MAGNIFICAT \"My heart praises the Lord; my soul is glad because of God my Savior, for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me happy, because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him. He has stretched out his mighty arm and scattered the proud with all their plans. He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with g-0od things, and sent the rich away with empty hands. He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors, and has come to the help of his servant Israel. He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham and to all his descendants forever!\" Mary stayed about three months with Elizabeth and then went back home. 179 TO THE QUEEN There have been queens Who were courageous, beautiful, and devoted, And others who were just the opposite. They have been running up and down The eminent staircase to sainthood. A queen is more than A ruler, a wife or mother, But she must be a seeker After the perfection Of the life or of the work, Or, maybe, of both conjointly. Our Queen Sirikit has never ceased To be a legendary queen, Like Chamdevi, Cleopatra, Elizabeth, By what's to become her high destiny-- The composite goal of courage and beauty, And the devotion to her own people, From the very outset up to this HAPPY SIXTIETH BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY! Dr. Montri Umavijani The Kingdom of Thailand ..
180 ON HER MAJESTY'S FIFTH CYCLE BIRTHDAY Back to the very dawn of our lives, Mothers rock and lull us to sleep. Now we've a Mother of the land, Her gracious Majesty the Queen, Who rocks the cradle of culture, And lulls us to wake and walk Up the high hill of good health And good-quality life. Her bloomed body and moulded mind Foster smiles and solicitude. Her sacrifices and compassions, Will have known no bounds. That's passport into the heart Of Her people's delight. When She's among the people It looks like a surre_alistic scene. She's a kind of versatile Queen, Who performs the Promethean task, Of the colossal public services. Her life-long devotion, So revives the lives of less fortunate So rehabilitates the environment and wild life, So revitalises arts and crafts, So is a legacy for living Has been Her untiring works. Her palace is a beehive of activities. Now Her Majesty Queen Sirikit Our graceful and generous Mother, Gathered sixty years of untamable time. We humbly present profound loyalties And wish Her a blessed body and blissful mind. Uthai Sindhusarn The Kingdom of Thailand
181 A GLIMPSE OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN IN THE ROYAL PROCESSION OF KATHIN ROBES TO THE TEMPLE OF DAWN, 1967 A stately boat glides along the gold-flecked river The air is bracing and the sky is sapphire blue like in a picture post card of a dream destination in far-flung places. Only this is true. The boat is real, hauntingly beautiful, and it moves at stately pace to carry the King and yellow robes, the royal gifts to a merit-making ceremony. Onlookers and visitors to the land are agog and the lemony light paints the scene in gold myriad stars bob on the choppy water, a mirror image of the heavenly supannahong. In the first and foremost royal barge with the proud and glittering prow is the lofty canopy of His Majesty on his progress to the Temple of Dawn. Joseph Conrad would have liked the scene as authentic as his tales of his beloved menam. He would have revered the exotic revelry but also liked to touch of reality. A white navy patrol boat carried the Queen who followed the procession. Clad in Thai silk, she smiled magnanimously and with the wave of her hand accomplished the smooth transition from fairy tale spectacle to magnificent reality. 189 IN TRIBUTE TO THE QUEEN... We stand at criss crosses of time looking deep into crystals of reality roll off from actions of experiences that alternate between bleak and happy. We are but mortals in time clutching onto straws of hope motivated by the mundane watching time grow into time Life can be monotonous... And yet, in crescendo of darkness we look at chance intervals of light revealing to us hope Memory connects with time in experience do we find beauty such as yours, Oh Queen! As a crown upon the season'd head of wisdom Your beauty is to your Kingdom. We are, after all, your subjects living and waiting for effects watching for visions like the land and the river the dancer and the rice signifying at once more gloriously Glory in celebration of you. We your subjects wonder in silence of your radiance wonder, at the generosity of your love for us, your children as human and as wondering as the stars upon the brilliance of Venus or Aurora You to us are Venus . ·You to us are Aurora Live Long Beauteous Queen Beyond the reckoning of time- work and days are but relative before Memory and Love in minds contemplative.
190 ·.. Now as sun sinks down again to horizon dotted with night lights, the dancers are turning in to sleep Live Long, Live on, Mother Queen, shine and in glinting echoes, may our refrain'd chant re-echo within refracting echoes: \"Glory, Majesty, Honor Ophir, Myrrh, Jasmine Be yours Oh Queen, Mother, Giver of hope and love To You alone do we speak our lives, our love, our poems though they be limited in line.\" (Dedicated to H.M. 191 GEDANKEN AN DIE MUTTER Zarter Blumen leicht Gewinde flecht ich dir zum Angebinde; Unvergaengliches zu bieten war mir leider nicht beschieden. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Light garlands of tender flowers I weave as a present to you; For to offer immortal things Alas, is not granted to me. In these light tendrils of flowers Rings the sound of my thoughts of love That are singing in soft notes To bring you my wishes from Heaven. And thus brings from regions afar This leaf words of flowers to you. May they before your eyes Be adorned with fresh colors forever anew. ..

·.. 194 MEMORY OF MOTHER The fiery star of day illuminates Alabaster pillars, majestic in their height. Chipped paint cracks like an actor's stale makeup Lining & veining in its various stages of decay. From this aging construct my minds' eye sketches a face Whose wrinkled leather is smooth to the touch And whose blue eyes stare steadily with unspoken knowledge Entranced, I reach out to touch her And the weight of my fingertips on the sun-warmed surface Ignites a cascade of chalky fragments That flutter to my feet. Her memory alone remains. Heather Lageman United States of America

196 ·.. HEART OF A DREAM INVOCATION Hail! Mother, marvellous face of Divinity's form. Descend, 0 Mother, amongst thy children and make earth thy home of felicity. Tread on this barren planet denuded of air and water, of filtering flora and feeding fauna; and make of this poor earth once again a verdurous dale fit for the wanderings of archangels and Rishis, of smiling marble visages, without worry for the morrow. HUMAN BONDAGE Now, in this stripped hour, generations are struck with the bolt of sorrow: their souls punched out, their faces defaced, I see them crossing the bridge near the Mall, or hiding in a dingy comer, with no past and future, and unaware of the present. Often I saw the sunbeams tremble on those blind roads where trembling hands received a Baht of pity. I saw stone-faces of anxiety, walk sinuously around the traffic, mindless of the screams of the dead ducks, hung, or of the quick laughter of the hidden blooms.
197 Cute faces, hidden behind their cascading hair, betrayed a courteous smile, but, they are empty as the last toothless smile. Eyes, half-opened, strenuously, reminding of the last breath, stared into a featureless future. Broken dreams on shattered faces, even the sun withdrew awaiting a new cycle, a new age. THE HARBINGER Of that silver age, you, 0 Queen, are the harbinger, Queen of our hearts and hopes. In you we can still dream and not forget to hope. The gathering winds whispered in my ear a musical name a name that opened ajar magical doors that led me to the land of fragrances and skies of flashing wings. \"It is all a dream,\" I hushed myself and shut my heavy eyelids. The flapping wings of the archangels designed a name in the silver sky, a name that brought me hopes of silken days and anearth . . clad in virgin ways. \"It cannot be a dream\", I told my awakened self, for the name I heard was \"Queen Sirikit\".
198 ·.. THE LIGHT OF BEAUTY I come from the land of the Buddha and Rama to the land of the King and the Queen, where the wind and the sunbeams chant her sacred name, and the people whisper, in silent, radiant adoration her name in musical hymns. Mother to a new nation, her celestial love and concern she spreads to weeping eyes, distributing to the lonely meek, fearless dreams of happiness. Her pervasive love is like sunlight bursting on winter flowers. Her smile, like the azure sky after the torturing storm, washes their torments and casts promises of a luminous morrow. The sudden beauty of her looks and glances sprout in their. hearts dancing hopes and myriad dreams. Exulting in ripples of her grace Thaidom leaps from yester years to a future eagerly desired by the monk and the manager and fashioned out by the Queen. It shall be a land of Thais modern beyond compare and ancient without parallel: strewn with wealth of matter, steeped in the wisdom of Dhamma.
199 UNITED FUTURE I've come from the land of Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo bringing visions of the New Man who shall surpass and transform our intimate musings in body and soul, and our mortal tenement and bring our sobbing earth close to paradise. Beyond our waking dreams there awaits the golden world, lined with divinity's forms, all that we ever dreamt or desired in the poets' songs and in the artists' passionate colors, in the orchestral sounds of music and in the sweet flute-pangs of lovers all, all shall find their blossom in that Supramental world, beyond our pregnant dreams, of which we get now, in moments of inner vision, fugitive glimpses and fleeting glances. Toward such glorious shores Thaidom moves, inspired, step by step, by the Queen, and there is no known ending to the rekindl~d flame of faith seen brightly in the young faces seeking the Spirit's ethereal ways. I've come from the land of myriad gods, to the land where there shall be, one day, the golden peace : Oh Shanti, · · Shanti, Shanti. (Dedicated to H.M.
