213 TO MY OWN MOTHER THE FIRST PHASE Everytime I cried as a child, (and how many times indeed !) I didn't know who you were; neither did I know many another too. But this I remember vaguely, Mama, --- So many hustling feet did cringe; so many outstretched hands extend. There always followed a chorus of deafening melodies, tearing the roof and rocking my cradle But lo, I seem to have gone on crying, reddening and bleaching till I turn'd mute, and motionless and moribund And there appeared a pair of hands, with a feathery touch, as though emerging from beyond, only to lift, softly and gently a sweat-chilled body, planting myriad kisses all over. What heavenly transformation ! What boundless joy ! Where was this angel hiding all along? Had I but known how to use words I heard, I.would, for sooth, have declared thus : 'Mama, d' you hear me, I now have come to where I always belonged.'

214 THE LAST PHASE Every time I failed in life .. (and how many times indeed !) Mama, you sure were near me, in flesh and blood, but I hid from you, imagining a thousand fears you might want to disown me. Having strayed from the righteous path, I now walked barefoot on earth, moving from place to place like a mendicant, and seeking new refuge every mom. I touched all people's feet -- people I never knew, people I thought I knew, but not really, and people I knew I shouldn't have known - and clasped their withdrawn hands, begging frivolous favours. The voices, which sang yesterday's lullaby, had become still. But I heard the distant thunder of deep disdain, amalgamating every voluble, hateful animadversion, now piercing my swollen ear-drums, now scorching my starved body and instantly eating my indolent brains. I ran for shelter in the incessant rain of hatred around me. When as a prodigal son, I retum'd with a load of unlived life on my back, there were those cataracted eyes, kept in that state by a sanctimonious neglect -- which, nevertheless, shone like the sun at summer solstice, which whispered a kindly 'Son, come home!' 'Mama, d' you hear me, I know now, IT WAS YOU, WHO ALWAYS BELONGED TO ME.' Sundarajan Parthasarthy, The Republic of India ABAC School of Risk Management and Insurance Assumption University

215 TO THE BEAUTIFUL H.M. QUEEN SIRIKIT A vision of a beautiful break of dawn. I could see an incan- descent light glowing from one corner. I move towards the warmth of light - mesmerised by it. And there I see the source of light and realise it is the halo effect of Queen Sirikit. I wake up suddenly, my vision of dream shattered. I sit down & wonder how a face could look so real & beautiful: Every fragment of my dream completely embedded in my mind, I now compare the Queen in my dreams & in reality. The classic face that is perhaps the masterpiece of nature. As if to gild the lily her beauty is crowned by the many virtues of hers. She is incomparable. There is no one who deserves to be compared with her - her face like a fullmoon emanating its soft radiance all over the earth. Itis not only her angelic fa~e that holds us spellbound. Her generous heart gives us equally concrete grounds on which to respect her even as an individual. Those soft hands have alleviated so many grievances, lightened so many hearts & uplifted so many spirits. The feet that glide on the velvety carpets also tread effortlessly on the improvised roads & bridges to relieve people from the web of poverty & to back up the country towards the epitome of development. It as if at your advent the sun shines and the moon & the stars would rather evolve around you. You are an inspiration to the people. Everyone is motivated through you. The outstanding blend of beauty & virtue has created in you an immortal enlightening light. This trifling foreigner bows her head before you. No eulogies would suffice to appreciate your kind efforts - Oh infinite mine of virtue - the nation's mother - Queen of the golden country Thailand. Prithuleswari Bom, The Kingdom of Nepal ABAC School of Management Assumption University ..

216 QUEEN SIRIKIT, THE COUNTRY'S LOVE Once, the young Bumi King was unlucky to have an accident in another country; She came though not a kin and nursed him out of compassion. 0, compa~ionate H.M. Sirikit ! On her tours around the land she meets the poor she understands; with love deep and tender many things she delivers. 0, affectionate H.M. Sirikit ! At the age of sixty, she is still youthful and pretty; many people from eight lands bow and wai with their hands. 0, H.M. Sirikit, the country's love. Myint Thein, The Republic of Myanmar ABAC School of Management Assumption University I
