Citation for Rev. Brother Simeon Petchara-Yuttachai as Professor of the Order of St. Gabriel at Assumption University of Thailand In the winter of 1939, responding to a call from God the nine-year old Claude Petiteau wrote down his commitment to join the Montfortian Brothers of St. Gabriel and to travel overseas to teach in any of their schools. Following his scholastic, juniorate and novitiate years in France, as a young Gabrielite, Rev. Brother Simeon began his teaching career on October 7, 1950 in France. In 1953 with some experience as a teacher, he moved to London where he taught for three years. Rev. Brother Simeon, at the request of his superior, arrived in Thailand on January 3, 1957 to begin his mission as teacher. Between the years 1957 and 1994 Brother Simeon taught English and Ethics , concurrently serving as administrator in various capacities at Assumption Colleges in Si Racha, Rayong , Nakhon Ratchasima , at ACC Bangkok and at ABAC which later became Assumption University of Thailand. In 1963 he was asked to found and administer Assump- tion College , Rayong, which he did very capably and was called \"the builder\" by fellow Brothers in the Thai Gabrielite congregation. Thereafter in 1967, he set up and administered Assumption College, Nakhon Ratchasima. Intermittently Rev. Brother Simeon was educated in the Philippines 84 T- ANN I V ER SARY RE V . (1969 - 1972 and 1987 - 1989) and in the USA at Santa Clara University, California (1976 - 1977) respectively. Even while he attended degree programs as a student, Rev. Brother Simeon lectured in Finance courses in the Philippines and California. Rev. Brother Simeon 's first assignment to the newly established ABAC was in 1972, where he arrived to teach English, Accounting and Marketing. Simultaneously between 1972 and 1974 he served at ACC, Bangkok where he helped reform the curriculum which had been in use since 1939. The other noteworthy of his innovations at ACC was to co-educationalize the institution by admitting women students for the first time, in 1972. Between the years 1989 and 1994, Rev. Brother Simeon implemented a new financial system at ACC and continued to teach at the newly upgraded Assump- tion University, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 1994 Rev. Brother Simeon, took up his current position as Vice President for Financial Affairs and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Finance and Banking, and continues in these roles even to the present time. Rev. Brother Simeon is a consummate and dedicated teacher. Through the many years of his encountering the youth of the world and here in Thailand, he has exuded self-discipline in pre- paring his lectures, his innovative assignments, projects and training for the students, and as his Thai first name, Anupatt, implies, he is and has been a mentor and advisor to many generations of students. Rev. Bro Simeon's punctuality to class, and the fact that in his 64 years of teaching, he has cancelled fewer than 10 classes, is testament to his self discipline and to his total value as a teacher to his students. He represents the ideal example of a transformative teacher in his philosophy which I quote from his own words: \"The way I regard my duty as lecturer is to look at what I have to do and that is, to change the students as 'raw material' into a 'beautiful finished product.' In teaching I do not just consider the material, but also the deportment of my students. I believe that when students g raduate, they should be fit and better formed as educated individuals.\" To the purpose of melding in his students' academic qualification and personal ethics, Rev. Brother Simeon has for over a good many years held his own \"Last orientation\" for graduating students in the very last class session, every semester. Graduates acclaim the advice given by Rev. Brother Simeon as enriching and ex- tremely valuable to them in their lives beyond university. It is indeed appropriate for us to therefore conclude that Rev. Brother Simeon's role as a transforming teacher is to lead by setting personal higher dispositional and knowledge acquisition examples. More significant however, is the fact that Rev. Brother Simeon has kept faithful to his religious vows by balancing his teaching and administrative careers with two golden religious practices. The first of these is prayer. Rev. Brother Simeon spends at least two hours everyday in prayer and in contemplation. The second practice is to wear the Crucifix of Christ on the lapel of his shirt or coat. \"I point out to my students, that the cross symbolizes my belief in someone, someone who never fails me. I therefore love the one, Jesus who never fails me.\" The internalization of Christ-centered valued, and the externalization of religious credo, to Rev. Brother Simeon, is representative of the personal 5 4 rn ANNIVE RSARY REV . BR OT H E R S IM EON AN U PATT PE T CHARA-YUTTACHAI

background and education that he has received. Furthermore , \"it also means asking , what shall we do with our lives? Our actions in life will be guaranteed of success, for success is not a destiny, it is a way of living, it also means being fulfilled in what I have done . Looking back, my life has a meaning. \" It is also fitting at a time like this for Assumption University of Thailand to genuinely appreci- ate and honor the life and work of a dedicated and committed Gabrielite, serving the cause of edu- cation and form ing the lives of young learners, spanning three continents and accruing to over 60 years. On behalf of the University Council, the Administrators, Faculty, Staff and students of Assump- tion University of Thailand, I now have the distinct pleasure to induct Rev. Brother Simeon Anupatt Petchara-Yuttachai as Professor of the Order of St. Gabriel. (Given on the 24th day of December 2008 at Assumption University of Thailand) 54 rn ANNIVE RSA RY REV. HIS WAY... OR, THE DOTS IN MY LIFE \"YOU DID NOT CHOOSE ME BUT ICHOSE YOU...\" JOHN 15/16 BY SAP Steve Jobs in his famous co mmencement address to Stanford Graduates in June 2005 went straight to the point and declared he would deal with three stories in his life. The first one was about connecting the dots. The following pages will attempt to connect the dots in my life over the last 75 years. It all started at the beginning of 1939 though I do not remember exactly what month. I was hardly nine years old and in the lowest division of the \"first class\" at the parochial school. One morning round 10, a black-dressed gentleman knocked at the door, declined his identity (I guess) and asked our teacher, the assistant parish priest, whether he could talk to us. For a couple of hours he explained who he was, a Brother of St. Gabriel; he belonged to a big group of Brothers that ran schools in many countries in Europe , Africa , Asia. I was captivated not to be a Brother though, at least initially. Religiou s congregations had been suppressed in 1905 and their assets confiscated by the State. Yet Brothers and Sisters ran schools dressed as common lay people and addressed as \"Monsieur\" or \"Mademoiselle\". As there were no Brothers' schools in the vicinity, I had no idea what a Brother could be, but to be a teacher, a missionary fascinated me. At the end of his talk, videos were a long way off, Bro. Andre Corsini, his religious name, told us that he would usually ask the students of the first division only to answer him but for once he would ask everyone. I was so happy to receive that little sheet of paper, write my name, my age (8 going on 9) and a big YES. I want to join in! Unwittingly, I had fallen in to the Lord's dragnet. A big dot in my life! It would take over three years before I could be brought ashore. Back home, I quickly narrated the whole story to my Mum who had no objection but when my Dad came back from work and heard about me volunteering to become a Brother of St. Gabriel it was a totally different sound. A Brother of St. Gabriel no never! A Benedictine, a Trappist, a Carthusian, yes! But a Brother of St. Gabriel, never. And that was that! In September 1939 the Second World War broke out, tragic events would soon follow, France would be occupied by the Germans and the Brothers of St. Gabriel totally obliterated from my screen ... Until Spring 1941. Coming back from school for lunch one day, I found a letter on my plate. Even if I had forgotten about the call, the Lord was asking me through his agent, the Frere Recruteur, whether I was still eager to join the St. Gabriel Brothers. My answer was an enthusiastic yes, right away. But easier said than done. If my Mum had no objection, my Dad was stone-deaf to my desire and wouldn't hear about those \"Brothers''. In September 1941 , the new school year started. It would be my last at the parochial school and my parents would have to decide what to do with me, next. One day, round Easter 1942 my Dad called me and asked me whether I still wanted to be a Brother. My straight positive answer made him relent and on August 27, I joined the Juniorate at St. Laurent- sur-Sevre . After five years as a \"junior\" and completing High School, I joined the Novitiate for a two- 8 4 rn ANN I V ER SARY REV. B ROT H ER S IM EON ANU PATT PE T CHARA-YUTTACHAI

year intensive training. On September 8, 1949 I was professed and became a full-fledged Brother of St. Gabriel. It had taken ten years since my first encounter with a Brother. I had sti ll to complete my formation at the Scholasticate for another year. Since joining the Brothers, I had often expressed the desire to go to the Missions. At the end of the Scholasticate the Brother Provincial came to give all of us our first obedience. I was told to prepare myse lf to go to London to take a degree in Economics in view to going to Thailand, I was thrilled! I was required to keep it secret though. Three weeks later, the Brother Provinc ial was back. He had to make some changes because an elderly Brother had got sick, he had to be replaced ... I guessed right away that I had to say goodbye to London and Tha iland at least for the time. It wou ld take another three years before I would be assigned to London not as a student but as a teacher with the promise I would never be called back to France. God's ways are not our ways! It would take another three years before I would be relieved and allowed to go to Thailand . On January 4, 1957 I landed at Don Muang Airport. It was an ordinary class-day, Brothers were kept busy teaching. Bro. John-Mary, the Provincial, and Bro. Franc;:ois were waiting for me. As I had a five-year experience at boarding-schools, I was taken to Assumption Sriracha where Broth- er Montfort welcomed me. Teaching English , supervising boarders, taking care of entertainments would keep me busy for six years. Four years later I was also put in charge of the financial affairs of the school, something that would stick to me ever after. I had no secretary, some rudimentary adding machine. Everything had to be reported in huge ledgers in Thai. At the end of the semester I had to prepare all the boarders' bills to send them to their Parents. For about three weeks I would work from 8.00 p.m. till 3.00 a.m ., take a short nap and be up at 4.30 to start a new day. One morning in February 1963, I was working in my office when Bro. John-Mary appeared. After greeting me, with any more ado, he said, \"I am taking you to Rayong because you have been appointed as the first director!\" I had been to the place before, a 120 rai of reserved forest, totally isolated, a refuge for lepers, six kilometers away from the town with some foul-smelling tapioca plants around and in petto had pitied the poor guy that would have to settle here. His way! On April 17 I started a new Assumption School. On the administrative side it was easy. The Governor of the Prov- ince, Mr. Song Laohsoonthorn, who had initiated the project had prepared all the documents with the Land Department and the Ministry of Education. But on the practical side it was a different story. The school building and the Brothers' residence were not comp leted, the kitchen not even started . I had no teachers, no students, no furniture, no books or stationery. I was alone, my two co llaborators were finishing their novitiate at Eachinkadu, India. I was told to be ready for May 17! One ACS teacher had pity on me though and offered himself to be my secretary, his name was Mr. Sakda. On May 17, ACR opened its doors to about 600 kids from Grade 1 to Grade 7. A few weeks after the opening the Official in charge of the Private Schools at the Ministry of Education came to Rayong . We knew each another. He called a meeting of all Principals and Headmasters of private schools . After giving some advice and clarifying some problems, he started talking about the new school, how beautiful and wel l-organized it was, etc ... I felt quite uneasy. At the 84 1h ANNIVE RSAR Y REV. end of his talk, he asked if anyone had questions to clarify. For a few minutes you would have heard a fly flies. Then someone started complaining how the new school had perturbed his plan, then another one and another one until a lady got up and vented her anger as she had last 50% of her pupils ... I understood I had to take a subdued attitude and kept quiet. During the tea-party that followed I went to meet that lady and apologized for the trouble I had provoked . I got the ritual, non-committal Thai answer, \"Never mind!\" A year later, the mood had relaxed and Bro. Raphael, the headmaster, had established good relations with many schools. One afternoon the lady that had got so upset before dropped by. I welcomed her and inquired whether I could help her in any way. Her answer took me by surprise, \"Could you accept my son?\" she said. I tried to dissuade her but she wouldn't hear of it. Her son registered at ACR! In 1966, the Provincial and His Council moved many of the Directors. I was asked to take the helm at Sriracha. ACR was then well-established, in very good terms with all private schools, the leader when asked to do anything, even rise funds, by the local authorities ... I received a letter from the Governor thanking me for what I had done for the Province of Rayong. ACS would not see me long. The new Director of ACC , Bro. Honorat, was in bad shape physically and mentally. He had to go home and take a long vacation . He never came back. Bro. Philip Amnuay, the Provincial, asked me to take over as \"acting-director\". I had a nice time at ACC as a number of students were from ACS. It did not last long either. The Provincial Authorities had accepted to open a new school in Nakhon Ratchasima . Fr. Marius Bray, the parish priest, had been waiting for years already. As I had experience with starting a new school, I was chosen as the Principal of the new venture. It would not be smooth. Way back in 1957 I had had an opportunity to visit Korat, Fr. Bray had taken us, there were three of us, where he wanted the Brothers to start a school, on abandoned paddy-fields outside the city. I had promised myself, I'd never be there . Providence had other plans. When I reached Korat in February 1967, the school building was up to the first floor and the Brothers' residence did not exist yet. I had to stay at the presbytery, far away. We had been invited by the Diocese and I had no document allowing me to open a school. Obedience only could carry me. How far would it take me? Far indeed as I will explain later. To open a school, I needed teachers, pupils, furniture, etc ... Fr. Bray gave me a room at St. Mary's School, and I waited. Providence was definitely on my side. A teacher from ACS was the first to apply. He was a good man and had all the qualifications to be the Headmaster. Then old boys followed and others from Karat or neighborhood provinces. Meanwhile parents were coming to register their kids though some were a little suspicious but with a sense humor asked whether it was for the coming school-year, or the year after. They had gone to the place and couldn't believe it would ready in May. As I had no official documents I could not deliver receipts to Parents, many of whom worked for the Government especially in the military. As such they were entitled to get a refund. How could I get some kind of permission to open the school? I went to see the Official in charge of schools (Suksa Amphoe) in Karat city and little by little we became friends. When the Brothers' residence was ready I moved in to the surprise of many as the area had a poor safety 8 4 - \" AN N IVE RSARY REV. B ROT H ER SI M EON ANU P ATT PE T CHARA-YUTTACHAI

reputation and I was alone. I invited the Official to have dinner with me, he graciously accepted . We had a long discussion and I asked him whether he would allow me to open the school . He looked at me and said, \"How could I allow to open a 'forest of poles' as a school\", but added \"go ahead, I ignore everything!\" On June 23, ACN opened its doors to about 600 kids from Grade 1 to Grade 7 as ACR, four years before. Sometime in July, the Official in charge of education at the Province level (Suksa Changwat) came, I was teaching . He went to see the Headmaster and declared that ACN was run illegally. Grade 4 and 7 students would not be allowed to take the final exams .. . I don't remember being wor- ried or upset. I had obeyed my Superior and Official Document would come. They did as a wonderful gift of our Lady, on August 15, Assumption Day! They said \"Assumption College, Nakhon Ratch- asima is allowed to open as of May 17, 1967\" (Signed M.L. Pin Malakul , Minister of Education) . The \"Suksa Changwat\" never appeared again. Due to an increase in the number of students, a b igger and better organized canteen became a necessity. But how to finance it, we could just manage to make both ends meet from what we receive from the school fees. I went to see the Nuncio , H.E. Bishop Jadot, and asked whether Rome could help me . The answer was positive. I was already planning for the next school year when in November 1968 I received a letter from Bro. Robert Richard, the acting Provincial that took me totally unaware. He was telling me that I had been selected to go abroad to take a degree in Business Administration in view to becoming a lecturer at the University College the Provincial Council had decided to open in June 1969, upon a request from Bro. Bernard. When I arrived in Thailand, there were only five state universities, all in Bangkok. Private groups were not allowed to run tertiary institutions. In the late sixties tough, it became obvious that due to the demographic explosion the law would have to be modified sooner or later. The Ministry of Education took a rather ambiguous attitude, allowing private groups to run colleges but insisting on the fact that their degrees would not be recognized by the Thai Authorities. It was the morestrange as they were immediately recognized everywhere else, in the U.S., the United Kingdom, etc .... In July 1969, I flew to the Philippines. I had been accepted at Ateneo de Manila University, one of the best universities in the country, run by the Jesuits. I would put up at the Loyola House of Studies on Campus in Quezon City. That was where the major seminarians learned theology. To say I was welcome would be a big overstatement. I had rather the impression to be like an elephant in a Chinaware shop, a kind of intruder among the Jesuit elite ... After a couple of weeks, the new rector, the first Filipino Jesuit to hold that position, came to see me and said. \"I am fully aware of what is going on, but please stay with us. I want to make these Jesuit Fathers aware of the fact that we are not the only congregation in the world .\" One by one, they came to apologize and I was ac- cepted as a full-fledged member of the community... To become a student after twenty years on the other side of the fence was not a synecure . I had to put up tremendous efforts to be at par with other students, half my age. But after a few months I felt at home with debit, credit, sales promotion, bond and stock..., when I was asked to transfer to St. Louis University in Baguio City situated at 8,000 feet, 84 - h ANNIVE RSARY REV. BROTHER S I M EON ANU P ATT PE TC HARA - YUTTACHAI

250 kilometers, north of Manila . Some young Brothers would join me . I would be the Superior of the community. Baguio was an ideal place for study. No pollution, no night life, it was a peaceful place. Winter could be cold though with temperature at 2 or 3 degrees early in the morning going up to 15% by noon. I spent there two wonderful years as a student and unexpectedly as a lecturer. It must have been a week before the reopening of a new semester. The secretary of the President called me and told me to come right away. A lecturer has disappeared without prior notice, the Presid ent asked me to 1ill in . Overnight I became a lecturer in Social Psychology, Psychology of the Personality, Psychology of religions, attached to the Nursing Department. In March 1972 I had completed my B.Sc in Commerce and registered for some graduate courses during the summer session. One day, when I came back home, I found a telegram \"come back immediately''. Signed, Philip . As Bro. Philip Amnuay was my Provincial Superior, I had but to obey. Soon enough I would discover that the mes- sage was fake. Bro Philip had never sent me any telegram, but that is another story. The Assumption School of Business had opened on June 2, 1969 with 52 students all majoring in Marketing. Two years later, the Parliament voted a law allowing privategroups to run \"university colleges\". ASB had been rechris- tened Assumption Business Administration College or ABAC - A-BAC that soon would become a brand name in the city. I was asked to teach accounting and be strict with the students who had gone on strike against the lecturer I was replacing. I kept my usual self and things went on very smoothly. But ABAC had to leave ACC as it was against the law to run two institutions on the same campus. A few years before an old student of St. Gabriel's had given some land in Hua Mark. The school had no intention to move in that yet-to-be developed area. It was decided to transfer ABAC there for the 1973 academic year. I was getting ready to move but Providence had other plan for me again. It had been decided that I would take charge of ACC. I initially declined as I was more inte rested in teaching than running a school. The Superior insisted, ACC was still using the same program as when it started. It needed a big overhaul. I yielded but said I would also open ACC for girls. \"That's your business!\" was the answer. That ACC would become co-educational was badly received by the teaching staff as if ACC would be destroyed by the move and yet when it was pub- lished in newspapers, English, Thai, Chinese, the answer was enthusiastic. Hundreds of Parents rushed to the school to have their daughters registered. In May 1973, ACC reopened with a new look. My stay there wouldn't be smooth . The 'old guard' did not agree with my personal approach. Things went really bad during the \"October revolution\". Thammasat students had initiated a push against the military junta and the movement had spread around the city like 1ire. One morning buses came to the school taking students to the demonstration area. They had organized everything themselves. Teachers came to see me urging me to stop them. They were totally out of focus and couldn't un- derstand why I wouldn't use my authority and tell the students to go to class . I waited and at 10:00 a.m. I announced the School was closed sine die. At the end of the year, I resigned to return to what I like best, teaching. In fact I would fall out of the frying pan into the fire. The prevailing atmosphere at ABAC was so bad that the President and the Registrar had called it quit. I was told to go there as 8 4 rn AN NI V ER SARY REV. B ROT H ER Sl rv1 EON ANU PATT PE T CHARA-YUTTACHAI

soon as possible. It was during the summer session. I opted to reside at the Provincial Headquarters, Soi Thong Loh . Overnight I had to handle over some course in Psychology, take care of Financia l Affairs and the Bookstore. Bro. Martin who had just been appointed as new Provincial Superior im- mediately set to solve the problem. He asked the help of four lecturers from Nida who formed a kind of interim committee to take charge of day-to-day's operations. ABAC needed a new President though. The wife of one the comm ittee members was pro- posed and accepted . Acharn Wanphen Nopaket became the second President of ABAC . For over two years we worked closely together, our first objective was to get ABAC degrees recognized at par with degrees delivered by State Universities. It took us hours and hours of patient work, umpteen re- ports and meetings with the committee appointed by the new Ministry of University Affairs. We fin ally obtained full recognition when the first class of ABAC students completed the program. At the same time I was also busy teaching fulltime, looking over financial affairs and the bookstore and treasurer of the St. Gabriel Foundation . Initially I was alone, it was only after one year that a full-time account- ant was hired, Miss Suda Kittikorncharoen, the elder sister of four ACS former students . So far I had just completed a B.Sc. in Commerce, majoring in Management; it was definitely not enough if I were to be a scholarly lecturer. I approached Brother Martin who not only gave me the green light but encouraged me to go. I first applied to Santo Tomas University in Manila and was accepted. Acharn Wanphen asked me to delay my departure as there was nobody to take over and a lot of things had yet to be settled. A few months later things had improved . Bro . Leo and Bro. Banyat after complet- ing their master degrees in the US had come to help. I was granted a scholarship to study at Santa Clara University (California) through the help of Rev. Father Richard Coz, a Jesuit priest, who had advised Brother Bernard since the beginning of ASB. At the same time I was offered to teach and reside at Bellarmine Preparatory College. It would cover board and lodging expenses. I reached BPC in San Jose on January 3, 1976 and was warmly welcome by the Father Rector and the Father Minister (treasurer in Jesuit parlance). The Father Rector told me, \"you are now a full member of the community!\" I received two keys that allowed me to open any door, including the food storage in case I would have to take a late supper because of my classes. To go to Santa Clara University a couple of miles away was not a big deal as there were buses running that way. To come back was more co mplicated. After 10.00 p.m. buses were few and rare between . So I decided to wa lk my way back which made my hosts nervous. I could be mugged along the way. In fact I rarely met any soul. For 20 months I would be a Jesuit. It was brotherhood as its best. The Jesuits in California had a well-known vineyard competing with de La Salle Brothers who run their own. The Rector of Santa Clara University was a doctor in Oenology! They enjoyed teasing about wine, as I came from a well-known wine area in France. California wine is as good as French Wine they'd say to which I would answer \"So long I have good wine in my glass, I couldn't care less.\" One day I got some revenge though. The Fathers at Bellarmine College Preparatory would host a banquet for their benefactors once a year. They would cook, prepare cakes and serve at table. They asked me to look over the wine service. When I went to check, it was only high quality French Wines . 8 4 TY ANN IVE RS ARY REV. BR 0 THE R S I iV1 E0 N AN UP AT T P ET CH AR A - YU TT AC HA I

During happy hours (5.00 to 6.00 p.m.) the next day I questioned why, \"It was a special occasion!\" was the answer, I smiled. In June 1977 I told the Father Rector and the Father Minister that at the end of the summer session I would have completed the MBA program and go back home to Thai- land. They were dumbfounded and urged me to stay. How could I prefer Thailand to the California Paradise? Nonetheless, the day I left on August 16, the day Elvis Presley took his life, the Fathers organized a Eucharistic celebration and a succulent lunch . Mr. Inn Narula, a 1st batch ABAC student who would lecture at his alma mater later, took me to the airport. I made my way back via Taiwan and the Philippines where I spent over ten days. In Manila I took a taxi to San Sebastian College run by the Recollet Fathers I had known in Baguio before. I forgot all my documents, passport, air ticket and money in the taxi. The only thing I had with me was a receipt with the license plate number of the taxi . I was getting ready to rush to the airport when the taxi came in to bring me back what I had left in . I gave a generous tip to the honest driver. When I reached Bangkok in early September, Bro. Louis Chanel, the new Provincial, had gone to India for some training and Bro. Martin, the former one, was getting ready to go to Stanford University. Bro. Cyril took me to ABAC where Dr. Choop Kanchanaprakorn, the former rector of Nida, was president. He was a very nice person and put his expertise to codify rules and regulations for the Institution. He left in May 1979 as he had been appointed the first Minister of the newly created Ministry of Science and Technology which was partly his work as he had prepared all the rules and regulations of that Ministry also . Three months later he was unceremoniously sacked by General Kriengsak, the Prime Minister, in a cabinet revamp he was not even aware of. It was a big blow for Dr. Choop. He still had an office at ABAC and would drop by every now and then, Dr. Chavalit would brief him about events and development under the leadership of Bro. Martin, the new President. His health soon deteriorated and he died an untimely death. As the semester was coming to an end, I was free until the beginning of November and spent my time preparing for the courses I would have to teach. I was appointed Chair of the new Department of Finance and Banking. As the Department was still very small, I would handle all the major courses for junior and senior students . Three weeks after my coming back, I received a let- ter from my Dad telling me he was coming to visit me. He gave me wrong data about his arrival and came alone from the airport as the airline company had helped him take a taxi. During one month we moved around, went to many places, took all means of communication available, tried all types of food, drank beer - something my Dad considered as a low-class drink, unworthy of a wine- grower, but it was hot and water too bland. Bro. Banyat organized a grand dinner at the top floor of the Chockchai Building on the occasion of his 72 birthday anniversary. Back home, he had a lot of stories to narrate the more as he was marvelous story-teller, even if at times he would embellish what he was talking about. Back to work I was enjoying trying to make my students understand the intricacies of invest- ment, financial markets, financial analysis, etc ... Sharing knowledge, helping young people develop into well-read and ethical entrepreneurs was a noble vocation and I felt proud and happy to have 84 r\" ANNIVERSARY REV. been called to such a glorious task. Then as the position of Vice-President for Academic Affairs had been left vacant, Dr. Choop asked me to ta ke over. My first objective was to create unity and a friendly atmosphere among lecturers and secretarial staff, make them aware they were valued as worthy collaborators. At the same time, I would make sure that English was used in class as it takes time to create a culture and move around at least once every day. I did the same during exam time and often caught cheaters proctors were unawa re of. Meanwhile under the dynamic leadership of the new President, ABAC was developing fast on many fronts. When Bro. Martin took over the number of students stood at 1, 180, ten years later it had jumped to 7,461 ! New buildings had been added in a well-planned manner so as to keep as much greenery as possible. But most important, the reputation of the institution as a place of learning excellence had spread over. In 1987 my life would take a new turn again. I was requested by my superior, Bro. Surasit, to go and take doctorate study. The program I had followed at Santa Clara University didn't exist anymore. I contacted De La Salle University in Manila. I knew the President, Bro. Andrew Gonzales, as I had spent vacation time at DLSU during my first stay in the Philippines. To become a student at my age , I was over 57, was quite taxing. I did my best though and got excellent results but I had lost the zest of my youth . I asked to be allowed to follow the renewal September 1987 - January 1988 session at EAPI (East Asia Pastoral Institute). It was to be a wonderful experience , a real blessing. We were over 70, mostly religious from different orders or congregations from as far as Ireland and Alaska, there was a married permanent deacon from Indonesia, a Swiss laywoman , missionary in Cambodia, one Sister from Kera la was a medical doctor. Our mentors were mostly Jesuit Fathers but there were also outsiders, one sister of the Cenacle as spiritual director, some lay people (couples) sharing their experience. We were a happy lot! There was time for lectures, for personal reflexion and research, for dialogue as we were divided into groups . There was a managing team to coordinate all functions and activities. The president was an Irish Redemptorist, missionary in the South of the Philippines, I was chosen as one of the two Vice-Presidents. There was some kind of treasury work to collect money from the participants who had taken drinks from the refrigerator in the community room. I was the only one who even ran the business at a profit! In February, I was back to study. I had also been offered to teach Financial Management at the Faculty of Business Administration. The Reg istrar's Office had secured me a permanent certifi- cate of residence so that I could be registered as a full-time lecturer. I realized how DLSU was highly respected when my ID card would open me many doors. Filipino students are totally different from Thai students, which does not mean better. They are lively, there are eager to answer or present reports , which is more attractive for Western-trai ned lecturers . As I was going on with my study I questioned myself. If the program were aiming at making students experts in a particular field, finance in my case, I would have enjoyed it. It was not! Through long years of lecturing , reading, carrying personal research in varied fields, I had acquired a lot of ex- perience and broad knowledge . To complete a degree to be able to add Ph .D. or D.B.A. to my name 84 -\" ANNIV ERSA RY REV. BRO TH ER SIMEON ANUPATT P ETC HARA - YUTTACHAI

or sign \"Br. Dr.\" was superfluous . Brother, a genuine one, was a glorious title that no other title could ever upgrade. I consulted with my superior who agreed with me . In April 1989, I was back home and appointed Dean of the BBA Faculty. Obedience came in though and I was asked to go to ACC and prepare a finance and accounting system for the school. Providence was on my side as usual . As I was thinking of hiring a professional accountant, I received a phone-call from Miss Noranut telling me that a young lady completing a degree in accounting at Ramkhamhaeng University and with a few years' experience had applied to work at ABAC; there was no vacancy and I might be interested. Immediately, I arranged for an interview. We hit it off right away and Miss Nattha became the first genuine accountant ACC had ever had. I asked her to spend a couple of weeks at ABAC to study the system and write a manual for further accountants. I could trust her as she was knowledgeable and honest, even if I was the final decision-maker. She helped me a lot. I had my full load of teaching at the University. Two days a week I would leave ACC at 4.30 a.m. to beat the traffic and have ample time to prepare myself. I had to take care of the evening program students too . The other days I had to teach management to students at ACC. All this kept me very busy but the fraternal atmosphere of the community soothes the load. Every now and then we would go out and enjoy a hearty dinner at Neil's Tavern in Soi Ruamrudee. We had lively discussions at meal time, regular and well-prepared dialogues. Miss Nattha had a two-year old daughter; she asked me whether she could bring her as there was nobody to take care of her. I was a little anxious to know how she would react to an elderly man and a foreigner to boot. It was love at first sight. She looked at me and rushed into my arms . We became a close pair, she would spend hours in my office, we would go to buy fruits, visit the gar- den ... Some people got even jealous of us. My little Nong Toey is still very close to my heart as is her mother, but she has graduated from Mahidol University in International Business Management and is an air-hostess with Qatar Airlines. In 1994, Bro. Banyat, the Director of ACC, had completed his mandate and been asked to take over the helm at ACN. Bro. Cyril was appointed as the new boss . I was told to go back to ABAC which had become Assumption University in 1990. Bro. Martin offered me to take control of the finance as Vice-President for Financial Affairs. At the same time, I would keep my full load of teaching. My work as V.P. was essentially control of cash ~ow. The personnel in the Department under the leadership of Miss Noranut were highly competent and totally dedicated. It made the job much easier. When Miss Noranut was appointed \"Internal Auditor\", Miss Natthayamon who had been working in the Department for a member of years was a ready choice to take over. The President, Bro. Bancha asked me to split the Department into two independent units; the Finance Department, including Finance, Accounting and Budgeting and the Inventory Department including Purchasing, Storage and Bookstore. Initially I was asked me to look over the Inventory unit. In March 2000 the brand new Suvarnabhumi Campus opened its door to students ... I had to follow. Early morning I would take the coach to be back in the late afternoon and take care of Financial Affairs . If it appeared a little wearing at the outset it soon became routine and part of life. So many people have to go to work under much more tiring circumstances. I had to give up teaching the MBA program though . When Miss Chongthip felt ready to take control of the Inventory Department, I let her do. 84 T\" ANNIVERSARY REV. BROTHER SIMEON ANUPATT PETCHARA-YUTTACHAI

In 2008, after 14 years as Vice-President for Financial Affairs , I offered my resignation . I was 78, it was time for young blood to take over. It was accepted. On the occasion of the award cere mony on December 24, 2008, I was given the title of \"Professor of the Order of St. Gabriel'', the highest award the university would give. It was upgraded into \"The Great Professor of the Order of St. Gabriel \" on April 26, 2013 and accompanied by a beautifully designed locket. Life goes on, I still keep my teaching load and commute morning and evening. For the last few years I have been given a car and a driver which has the double advantage of being restful and allowing me to say the Rosary quietly. So long I can keep alert, up-to-date and students appre ci- ate my teaching, I feel duty-bound to go on . People have questioned me though how I could carry on after so many years and not feel bored not to say fed up, the more as to day's students are so different from their elders 20, 40 years ago. In the address I mentioned earlier, Steve Jobs urged graduates to find out what they loved . \"The only way to do great work is to love what you do,\" he said . As Steve Jobs I was lucky to find what I love early in my life . On the occasion of 60 years of teaching I wrote an article entitled \"60 years and beyond\" . Here are some extracts . \"Born to be ... \" As far as I can reminisce it seems I was driven towards an inescapable issue . I was hardly two years old, my elder sister had just joined kindergarten, and I was pestering my Mum to go with her which I eventually did. To go to school, to learn the basic \"r's\" was exciting ... No wonder that soon enough a forceful attraction deve loped. I would be a teacher, even though old folks would tease me and warn me that I would never be rich! Had they known better... Sixty years of \"teaching\" have enriched me more than anything else could have done or anybody else could boast of. I have acquired a wealth that \"moth and rust cannot destroy; thieves cannot break in and steal.\" (Re Mat. 6/19) Knowledge? A good measure . Experience? Qu ite a lot. But above all the intense satisfaction to have achieved what I had set to, to have lived a meaningful life, to have guided - in my humble way- thousands of young men and women \"towards a richer life\"... Even if I was a member of the Administration for decades, what I remember most, cherish best and be proud of above all is to have been one of the \"Managers of the Learning Process\" as Gaby A. Mendoza, the first dean of AIM, expounded forcefully twenty years ago. \"Excellence in teaching , he wrote, begins with the realization that it is not teaching but learn- ing that is important. .. if our students do not learn , education has not taken place ... Our primary func- tion is to create an environment that will encourage our students to think boldly, to talk freely, ... to give them room to grow,. .. responsibility to shape their own development... to become empowered thinkers and responsible doers .\" (World Executive's Digest I October 1990, p. 98) Along those sixty years, my own philosophy has evolved and made me more and more conscious of my involvement and responsibility. \"To teach, wrote John Paul 11, does not mean to communicate what we know only, but above all reveal who we are by living what we believe in!\" The author of the Imitation of Christ dolefully complained that \"every time he had lived among men, he had come back, less of a man .\" So sad! On the first day of each semester I invite my students to a four-month exciting experience during which together we shall discover what \"financial management\" is about, learn to learn, come 84 rH ANN I VERSARY REV. to know and appreciate one another, improve ourselves and become a better person by the day... The response is enthusiastic. Then on the last day, I congratulate them and thank them for what they have taught me, warn them that life is meaningful only if we \"believe\" in someone, in something. I remind them they have never seen me without a cross pinned on my shirt. Without it and who it rep- resents , I couldn't be what I am. Life is a pilgrimage, if we have faith whatever it may mean for each one-, if we do what we love and love what we do, the worst hardships won't be able to overcome us. \"Amor omnia vincit! (Virgil)\". Success will be ours, something we live day after day, success, a jour- ney, NOT a destination. For sixty years I have trodden my way- His way, I should say - in different places, countries, continents trying to share what I knew and believed in ... The reward is so deep as to be inexpressible.\" As I complete my seventh life-cycle, my feelings have not changed and I am as enthusiastic as ever to help young men and women develop into well-informed, eager-to-achieve and honest peoples, different yes, but worse as some would imply definitely not. Their deportment may appear strange even baffling at times. That is precisely when the educator can, should, play an influential role as a guide. Education is a two-way street, up-down when the educator shares his/her values and knowledge and down-up when the educator goes to the level of his/her students to understand their needs and expectations and build on that. Then, he/she can obtain tremendous response. 84 r\"' ANNIVE RSARY RE V. BROTHER SI MEO N ANU P ATT PE T CHARA-YUTTACHAI
