Technical Skills in Volleyball Technical skills are defined as \"the specific techniques for moving one's body to complete the work that has to be accomplished.\" In volleyball, proper execution of technical skills is obviously critical to success. Even inexperienced coaches are aware of the basic technical skills of volleyball: serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging. However, a coach's ability to teach athletes how to do such skills typically grows over time as he or she accumulates knowledge and experience.

Tactical Skills in Volleyball Volleyball athletes must not only master technical talents, but they must also grasp game strategy. \"Decisions and actions of players in the contest to obtain an advantage over the opposition team or players\" are classified as tactical talents (Martens, Successful Coaching, p. 170). Basic volleyball materials may emphasize the game's technical talents while ignoring the tactical aspects. Because they are so focused on teaching technical skills, coaches even leave tactical concerns out of practice. Volleyball players must study methods and tactics together in order to improve as overall players. Focusing on three important characteristics, known as \"the tactical triangle,\" is one technique to approach tactical skills. Reading the play or situation Acquiring the knowledge needed to make an appropriate tactical decision Applying correct decision-making skills to the problems at the correct time

Volleyball Officiating Techniques Officials in volleyball have a variety of responsibilities, and they must maintain a close check on every point throughout the match. For each match, a two-person officiating team is formed, with one serving as the head referee and standing on the referee stand, and the other as the \"down\" official, assisting with substitutions and plays at the net. To become a certified referee, learn the rules and subtleties of the game and pass a certification course. The United States is divided into several member regions of USA Volleyball, each of which is authorized to certify referees. To get certified, referees must normally pass written tests and receive clearance from the USA Volleyball region chair and commissioner. Learn how to use hand signals and when to use them. Referees must be aware of the substitution, illegal contact, and fault signals. They must also be able to indicate whether the ball is in or out of play. Officials are expected to make the correct call relatively immediately after each play is completed. Maintain discipline throughout the game. Maintain close contact with your assistant referee and scorekeepers to ensure that both teams adhere to the substitution and formation rules. Communicate openly with the captains of each team. Recognize when a yellow card for a penalty or a red card for an expulsion is appropriate. Start the game by writing down each team's lineup and rotation, tossing a coin with the captains to determine which team serves first, and blowing your whistle to indicate the start of the game.
