PH1020 Experimental Practice Semester 1 The module aims: Content: To introduce students to a range of strategies to engendered creative approaches to image making Develop students skills in critically assessing photographic work To encourage experimentation and testing in students practical work Module Content: A series of exercises to explore a range of techniques, approaches and ideas about image generation and display. Group briefings, lectures and exploratory crits to assess visual methodologies with the aim of encouraging experimentation. Day trips and gallery visits to encourage students to critically reflect on issues around the display and distribution of imagery.

PH1020 Experimental Practice Learning Plan: The module will rely on lectures, seminars and live briefs, in conjunction with visits to sites and galleries in order to develop a critical understanding of the medium and an experimental response to generating material. The module is designed to deliver a more immersive learning experience by alternating different types of contact. Participation in seminars and workshops is important for the learning experience. Students will be asked to reflect on the ideas and techniques underpinning their working practices. The assignment will assess the students’ ability to do Experimental Practice.

PH1020 Graduate skills are intrinsic to all project briefs and Experimental Practice involve analysis, critical thinking and problem solving. Verbal communication and interpersonal Learning Plan: skills will develop through studio based activities, group critiques and tutorials with both staff and peers. Time management and organisation are fundamental in meeting critique and project deadlines. Independent study underpins this and allows for students to develop their self learning skills. Students receive Formative Feedback part way through their studies, which they have the opportunity to respond to before the summative assessment at the end of the module. At the end of the module students also receive Summative Feedback following assessments. Feedback is verbal (through tutorials, reviews and critique) and written.

Tutors will always provide feedback that PH1020 promotes learning, reflection and enables students to plan effectively for future learning and assessment. Students are Experimental Practicealso encouraged to engage with feedback, preferably in the learning environment (e.g. the classroom, or online). Feedback: Tutors will always provide feedback as soon as possible and no longer than three working weeks (and in advance of moderation if this will slow the return or work). Feedback will be provided electronically and tutors will not breach anonymity of marking where it is required.
