“hole” in the continuity of the data. Some smaller files can help fill that empty space, but the chances that the hole will be exactly filled are slim. Therefore, as time goes on, your hard disk will become full of empty space with files scattered throughout your drive, which is called fragmentation and can cause considerable slowdown to your computer. Consider the following diagram. It represents a hard disk and all of its information: Fragmented Information De-fragmented Information Disk Defragment rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently. Disk Defragment runs on a schedule, but you can also analyze and defragment your disks and drives manually. To do this, follow these steps: Steps to Follow: Step-1 : Right-click the hard disk that you want to check, and then click Proper- ties. Step-2 : Click on 'Tools' menu. Step-3 : Click 'Optimize' option. Step-4 : To determine if the disk needs to be defragment- ed or not, click Analyze disk. If you are prompt- ed for an administrator password or confirma- tion, type the password or provide confirmation. (Once Windows is fin- Smart Computer Science Book-8 45
ished analyzing the disk, you can check the percentage of frag- mentation on the disk in the Last Run column. If the number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.) Step-5 : Click Defragment disk. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirma- tion. (Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk. You can still use your computer during the defrag- mentation process.) TIPS & Tricks • If the disk is already in exclusive use by another program, or if the disk is formatted us- ing a file system other than NTFS (New Technology File System) file system, FAT (File Allocation Table), or FAT32, it can't be defragment. • Network locations can't be defragment. • If a disk that you're expecting to see under Current status is not showing up there, it might get an error. You should try to repair the disk first, then return to Disk Defragment to try again. Check your hard disk for errors for more information. Back up your files and Restore from Backup To help Ensure that you don't lose your files, you should back them up regu- larly. You can set up automatic backups or manually back up your files at any time. Step-1 : Click the 'Start' button. Step-2 : Click on 'Settings' option. Step-3 : Clcik 'Update and Security' option. INTRODUCTION OF MS-DOS MS-DOS stands for Microsfot Disk Operating System. It is a Character User Interface (CUI) operating system software. It is also called command Line In- terface (CLI) operating system. It provides single user operating environment. It takes over once the computer is turned on. This software manages all the computer operation such as input output, processing, storage, managing files and folders on the disk. It controls and accepts the commands given by the user and tells the computer how to perform a specific job. It also plays the role of coordinator between hardware and software. The commands given by the input unit are sent to the computer where these are translated by MS-DOS into signals which computer can easily understand. Features of Operating System • It is a single user and single tasking operating system. • It supports both floppy disk and hard disk to boot the computer. • It provides CUI (Character User Interface) • It supports all the computer languages. • It is loaded into computer memory from the disk. COMMON TERMS USED IN MS-DOS Booting Loading the system files IO.SYS and MS-DOS.SYS and Command interpreter file COMMAND.COM into the computer memory from the disk is called boot- ing. It is also known as to start-up the computer. File File is a collection of related information under a single name which may be document, program, database, etc. A file name is always given uniquely. A file name has two section; one is primary section and another is secondary section which are separated by dot (.). The secondary section is also called extension name. Directory Directory is a location of the disk where files and sub-directories are stored. There are two types of directories one is Root directory and another is Sub directory. Root Directory: Root directory is a initial directory; also called main directory. The disk drive name C:, D:, E:, etc. called root directory. Sub Directory/Parent Directory: A directory may comes inside a directory is called sub directory. It is also called child directory. A directory comes outside of a directory called parent directory. Disk drive The device which is used to read data from the disk and write data to the disk is called disk drive. The disk drive is named by alphabet such as (C:), (D:), (E:), etc. Default Drive The drive which is selected automatically to read and write files automatically by operating system is called default drive. Prompt Prompt is a set of one or more than one characters symbolic name. It is also called interface of MS-DOS where user enters command to perform the task. Path Path is a way or route which indicates the location of the files and folders in the disk. It is always followed by back slash (\\). It helps to handle and organize files and folders easily such as to create, delete, rename, search, copy, store files and folders. Example : C:\\>DEL D:\\XYZ\\MOM.LTR 56 More on Operating System
Wild Card Character Wild card characters are the special keyboard characters which are used to represent one or more than one character in the file name. There are two types of wild card character. One is ?(question mark) and another is *(star). Question marks (?) represent only one character of a file and star (*) repre- sents remaining all the characters. These characters are used to handle file management such as search, copy, delete, rename, etc. MS-DOS COMMANDS Command is an order or instruction given to the computer to do a specific task. MS-DOS supports varieties of commands which are grouped in two types: 1. Internal Commands 2. External commands Internal Commands Internal commands are loaded with the MS-DOS during the booting. These commands are the programmed with the COMMAND.COM file. The example of internal commands are CLS, DIR, COPY, DEL, REN, etc. Internal Commands These are those commands which are not in-built in MS-DOS. It needs need of an internal file in the computer to read external MS-DOS command. Ex- ternal commands are powerful commands. They perform advance tasks like fix problems, improve performance, or perform other actions. External com- mands usually have higher resource requirements than internal commands. The common external commands are: CHKDSK, DISKCOPY, EDIT, TREE, FIND, SORT, FORMAT, BACKUP, RE- STORE, DELTREE, etc. Smart Computer Science Book-8 57
Points to Know • Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and di- rectories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. • The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthor- ized users do not access the system. • The operating system which allows one user at a time to operate on the com- puter is called single user operating system. • The operating system which allows several users at a time to operate on the computer is called multi user operating system. • A GUI based operating system provides icons and menus and allows the user to choose options using the mouse or keyboard. • The CLI based operating system does not use any icons and menus. The com- mands have to be exactly and correctly spell and need to memories. In this principal, the user has to type specific commands to carry out functions. • Microsoft Windows provides a multi user and multi tasking environment to oper- ate the computer. • Hard disk may become full of empty space with files scattered throughout your drive, which is called fragmentation and can cause considerable slowdown to your computer. • Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently. • MS-DOS is a Character User Interface (CUI) operating system software. His gold coins were all gone! They must have been stolen the night before! Emperor Akbar was shocked to hear this. The place where the minister lived was the safest in the kingdom. Surely no one could have broken into the house to steal the coins! It must have been one of the other ministers who lived there, too, who took the coins. But who? The Emperor asked Birbal how to solve the case. Birbal called for a donkey to be tied to a pole at the place where the minister lived. He ordered all the ministers to lift the donkey's tail and say, \"I did not steal the coins.\" Then each of them must come to the palace later that day. When each of the ministers were at the palace, Birbal said, “Now each of you must turn your hand up, so I can see the palm of your hand.” This was odd and the ministers did not know what to think of it. But they did as they were bid. When Birbal looked at the hand of each minister he saw that each one of them, except Alim Khan, had a black patch of paint on their palm. You see, Birbal had painted the donkey's tail with a black coat of paint! He knew that the one minister who was guilty, in fear, would not touch the donkey's tail. And so once again Birbal proved how clever he was, and he was rewarded by the Emperor with 1000 gold coins.
