Icons The small pictures shown on your desktop are known as ‘Icons’ which represents a program or software. Taskbar The taskbar is a long horizontal bar which is placed at the bottom of the desktop. It contains buttons with icons, which represent the programs that are open on the system. It contains also ’Start’ button and time indi- cator. For example, if the ‘MS-Word’, MS-Excel, PowerPoint programs are opened, the task bar would look as shown below. Start Button The ‘Start’ button is located at the left cor- ner of the taskbar. It is used to start any program. It contains ‘Start menu’ along with many options. Minimize button: It is used to minimize the window to a button on the ‘Taskbar’. If you click once on this button, window will be minimized and trans- fer as button on the ‘Task bar’. Maximize button : If the window is small, clicking on this button to increase the size of the window. If you click on this button, windows will be maximized and fit to the full screen. Restore button: When you maximize the window, the maximize button changes to ‘Restore button’. Clicking on the ‘Restore button’, it restores the ‘Paint window’ to its original size. If you click on this button, you will get the original size of the window. Close button : It is used to close the window. When you click on this button, ‘Paint window’ will be closed. Scroll Bars The scroll bars help you to either move up or down in a window are known as vertical scroll bars. Status Bar A status bar is a small area at the bottom of a window. It is used by some applications to display helpful information for the user. Resize Corner Resize corner is known as the corner of bottom right corner. It is used to increase or decrease the size of the Window proportionally . Folder and files When you double click on hard disk icon from ‘This PC’ dialog, a win- dow shows a list of files and folders in the hard disk. Here it is clicked disk of D: drive Folder A folder is a container for programs and files in win- dows. It is used to store a group of files with data on the same subject. Trick & TIP A quick way to delete items is to drag it to the ‘Recycle Bin’. Recycle Bin is a folder that stores deleted files until they are finally removed from your hard disk. File Any information stored in the computer is in the form of file. Each file is given a name called ‘Filename’ which is useful to identify the file. Eraser Tool The Eraser Tool is used for erasing any part of the drawing. You can use this tool by clicking and dragging the mouse pointer over the area you wish to erase. You can increase or decrease the size of eraser. To use Eraser, Tool, follow the following steps: Steps to Follow: Step-1 : Select the Eraser from 'Tools' group. Magnifier Tool You may want to see a part of a drawing more closely. Using this tool you can zoom in or out of your drawing. To zoom in, just click on the part of the drawing you want to zoom into. To zoom out, right click on the part of the drawing you want to zoom out of. Color Picker Tool The Color Picker Tool helps us to pick a color from one part of the figure and fill the same color in the other part of the draw- ing. Step-1 : Click on the 'Color Picker Tool' from the 'Tool Box' . Step-2 : Click on the color in the picture which you want to pick. This color would be selected to fill in. Step-3 : Click the 'Fill with Color' tool. Step-4 : Click in the area of the picture where you want to fill the color. Now, the area of the picture gets filled with the color that was picked. Brush Tool Use the Brush tool to draw lines and paint in object that have a different appearance and texture. It's like using different ar- tistic brushes. By using different brushes, you can draw free- form and curving lines that have different effects. To use brush tool, do the following: Steps to Follow: Step-1 : On the Home tab, click the down arrow under Brush- es. Step-2 : Click the ar- tistic brush that you want to use. Step-3 : Click Size, and then click a line size, which determines the thickness of the brush stroke. Step-4 : In the Colors group, click Color 1, click a color, and then drag the pointer to paint. Step-5 : To paint using the Color 2 (background) color, right-click while you drag the pointer. Selection and Editing Technique In Paint, you might want to make a change to part of a picture or an object. To do this, you need to select the part of the pic- ture that you want to change, and then make the edit. You can edit as resizing an object, moving or copying an object, rotat- ing it, or cropping the picture to only show the selected item. But you can not change the size and medium of stroke and Fill medium. For selecting the object, do the following: Steps to Follow: Step-1 : On the Home tab, in the Image group, click the down arrow un- der Select. Step-2 : Do one of the following, depending on what you want to select: • To select any square or rectan- gular part of the picture, click Rectangular selection, and then drag the pointer to select the part of the picture you want to work with. • To select any irregularly shaped part of the picture, click Free-form selection, and then drag the pointer to select the part of the picture you want to work with. • To select the whole picture, click Select all. • To select everything in the picture except for the cur- rently selected area, click Invert selection. • To delete the selected object, click Delete. Step-3 : Determine if the Color 2 (background) color is included in your selection by doing the following: • To include the background color with your selection, clear Transparent selection. When you paste the selec- tion, the background color is included and will appear in the pasted item. • To make the selection transparent. Click Transparent se- lection. When you paste the selection, any areas using the current background color will be transparent, which will allow the rest of the picture to appear in its place. Copy a part of a picture or text. Cropping Drawing To crop the picture, Crop option is used from 'Image' group of Ribbon. Cropping lets you visible only selected portion of the drawing. To crop the image, do the following: Steps to Follow: Step-1 : Select the im- age, using se- lection tool. Step-2 : Drag the point- er to select the part of the pic- ture you want to show. Resizing a picture or part of it Use Resizeoption of Image group to resize the whole image or to resize part of image. You can also skew an object in the picture so that it appears slanted. To resize or skew image, do the following: Steps to follow: Step-1 : On the Home tab, in the Image group, click Resize. Step-2 : In the Resize and Skew dialog box, select the Main- tain aspect ratio check box so that the resized picture will have the same aspect ratio as the original. Step-3 : In the Resize area, click Pixels, and then enter a new width in the Hori- zontal box or new height in the Vertical box. Click OK. • If the Maintain aspect ratio check box is selected, you only need to enter the horizontal value (width) or vertical value (height). Drag the pointer to select the area or object, click Rotate, and then click the rotation direction. Outline The Outline feature is used to set the medium for outline of shape in the basis of selection of color from Color 1 group. There are different option under the outline option drop down menu. Once outline medium is set, we can not change it. Steps to Follow: Step-1 : Select the shape to draw. Step-2 : Click the drop down button of Outline option from 'Shapes' group of Home Tab, select the desire option for the out- line. Step-4 : Select the color from the Color 1 group Step-5 : Now, draw on the drawing area. Now, you get the outline of the object as you set your thickness, color and outline option. But If you select 'No Out Line' option, it hide the outline of object. Fill The Fill option is used to fill the color to the shapes with color 2 group. There are different types of fill option. To use this option, follow the fol- lowing steps: Steps to Follow: Step-1 : Select the shape Step-2 : Select the option of a Fill drop down op- tion. Saving and using your picture When editing in Paint, you should save your work frequently so you don't accidentally lose it. After you save your picture, you can use it on your computer. Set Picture as the Desktop Background You can also set the picture, so it's used as the desktop background on your computer. Steps to Follow: Step-1 : Click the File menu tab , and then click Save. Points to Know • MS-Paint is a feature that comes with Windows Operating System used to create drawings on a blank drawing area or in existing pictures. • Polygon tool is used to make a custom shape with any number of sides. • Color 1 is used with pencil, brushes and Shapes outline. It is known as fore ground color. • Color 2 is used with eraser and Shape Fills. It is known as back- ground color. • Size feature is used to set the thickness of outline of shape. • Shapes group is used to draw varieties of shapes for painting. • Brushes is used to draw different types of drawing and paint- ing. • Outline and Fill is to be set before draw the shapes.
