Any InDesign features which are not supported in XLIM will be listed. Click the page number at the right of the line to automatically select the object which has an unsupported feature. In the screenshot below you can see the selected textbox has text which has InDesign's underline text feature applied. You can choose to remove the feature manually by removing the underline text attribute, or the XLIM Preflight palette's Fix feature provides an automated option to fix the problem. In some cases there may be multiple ways to fix the problem. When the document has no problems, choose File -> Save As... and save the file with a different name so you can keep a copy of the original file. Select Export from the uCreate XM palette fly-out menu. Select to export a XLIM Document Package (DPKG). Upload your new DPKG to the uProduce campaign and process it to PDF using the same settings used earlier in chapter 6. In the Job Centre, refer to the production time and see how the XLIM performance compares to the InDesign document which you processed earlier in this tutorial.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 151
Creating new snippets for regularly used code sectionsIn version 5, XMPie introduced a new feature which allows uCreate XM to access regularly used pieces ofcode or snippets. Snippets are very handy for storing pieces of code that you use frequently in your crossmedia web pages.Snippets can be stored in several different places depending on how widely available you want to makethem: Availability Location to save SnippetOnly in the current website SiteRoot/App_Data/uCreateXMSnippets/Only to the current user, but across C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\multiple websites (Windows 7) Dreamweaver CS5\en_US\Configuration\Shared\XMPie uCreate\ uCreateXMSnippets\All users at the current Macintosh /Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS5/Configuration/Shared/ XMPie uCreate/uCreateXMSnippets/All users at the current (64-bit) C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5\Windows computer configuration\Shared\XMPie uCreate\uCreateXMSnippets\All users at the current (32-bit) C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS5\Windows computer configuration\Shared\XMPie uCreate\uCreateXMSnippets\Step by step instructionsCreate a new folder called SampleSnippet in one of the relevant locations as outlined in theabove table.Inside the SampleSnippet folder, create a HTML file called Sample1.HTML which contains thecode you want to use repeatedly. If your Sample1.HTML code requires additional files (for example images, javascripts, css ordlls) create a folder call Include inside the SampleSnippet folder and place the additionalfiles in the Include folder.Create a XML file in the SampleSnippet folder called SampleSnippet.xml. The name of theXML file you create should be the same as the folder name.Open the XML file and enter the following content:<?xml version=\"1.0\" ?><uCreateXMSnippets> <uCreateXMSnippet> <text>Sample Snippet number 1</text> <datafile>Sample1.HTML</datafile> </uCreateXMSnippet></uCreateXMSnippets>The text node is the title that will be shown in the Dreamweaver Bindings palette for thesnippet. The datafile node is pointing to a file which contents will be read and inserted. You can add additional HTML files to the folder and additional uCreateXMSnippet nodes tothe XML file to have multiple snippets in this group.152 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Adding image personalisation to the print postcardwith uImageIf you have XMPie uImage Server (also called uImage Production Unit) you can add attention-grabbingimage personalisation effects to your documents to help increase the impact and effectiveness of yourmarketing campaigns. The following steps will demonstrate how to add a uImage font-based effect to the design. Step by step instructions Open Photoshop on your desktop where you have uCreate Print installed. Additional information and notes Note that you must use the 32-bit version of Photoshop unless you are using Photoshop CS6 on Macintosh where there is no 32-bit option. In Photoshop open the cover.jpg image that is in the Resources folder provided with the XM_tutorial_resources_v4.zip. Use the Horizontal Type Tool to click once in the image and type <firstName> which is the ADOR name in our plan file. In the Photoshop tool bar, click the Centre Text icon. Set a font which is fairly bold and a size that makes the text about two thirds of the image width. I am using Hobo Medium 40pt. Set a dark blue colour. I am using RGB 11, 1, 90.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 153
Additional information and notes Clicking once to place text in Photoshop is called Point Text. For font-based effects, uImage requires Point Text. The other style of text in Photoshop is called Paragraph Text and is created by clicking and dragging an area with the Type Tool. Paragraph Text is not supported. Additional information and notes Note that uImage cannot work with text layers that are grouped into folders. Additional information and notes The < and > characters are used later for copy fitting. You can position the characters by typing full stops after the opening < if you want the text to extend further before copy fitting is needed. While the text cursor is still in the text, click the Create Warped Text icon in the Photoshop tool bar. Select the Wave Style, Horizontal, and set +50% Bend and 30% Vertical Distortion. Click OK. Click the tick icon to commit your changes.Type Ctrl-T or use the Photoshop menu to select Free Transform from the Edit menu.Enter -10 in the rotation box. Then click the tick icon to commit your changes. You may now want to use the Move tool to slightly reposition your text layer. Here is what myimage is looking like.154 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Locate the layers palette. If it is not visible, hit the F7 key, or use the Photoshop menu to select Layers from the Window menu. Right-click on your text layer and select Blending options... Click on the Bevel and Emboss section and make the settings shown to the left. Click on the Inner Glow section and make the settings shown to the left. Click on the colour square to open the colour picker. I used RGB 149, 220, 212.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 155
To get some of the background image showing through, click onto the Blending Options at the top. Turn on the Preview check box so you can see the effect on screen. Adjust the sliders at the bottom until you have a pleasing result. You can see the settings I used on the left. To split the handles, use the Alt key when dragging them.Your image should be looking something like this. Right-click on your text layer and select Duplicate Layer... If asked to name the layer, just click OK, it does not matter what it is called.Use the Type Tool to enter some static text. I entered Where are you?Type Ctrl-A to select all the text.Reduce the font size down to fit in the lower right-hand corner of water. I reduced the font to20pt.Click the Warp Text icon and reduce the Vertical Distortion down to 15%.Click the Tick icon to commit your changes.Use the Move tool to drag your new layer down and to the right.156 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Your image should look something like the one below. From the Photoshop File menu, select Save As... Save the file as cover.psd into the XM_tutorial_resources_v4 folder. From the Photoshop File menu, select Automate and then Export XMPie DPKG. Additional information and notes If you do not see this menu option, either you are not using Photoshop on the same computer where you have installed uCreate Print. Or, you are using the 64- bit version of Photoshop and should be using the 32-bit version.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 157
Choose to save your new cover.dpkg in the XM_tutorial_resources_v4 folder. Select the Overflow Copy Fitting Mode. Choose either Font Size or Horizontal Scale for the Copy Fitting Method. Click Export. Now we have our uImage Document Package (DPKG) we need to use uPlan to create anadditional ADOR object for the image so we can add it to the InDesign file.Browse to the uProduce dashboard and login.Go into the Travel Account and the Travel Campaign.Click the Plan link in the left-hand list.Click the name of your plan file.Click Checkout to lock the file and notify others that you are working on the plan.Click Download to download a copy of the plan file to your computer.Click the Data Sources link in the left-hand list.Click the name of your data source, then click the Export button to download a copy of thecurrent data source.Download the data source to your computer and extract it from the zip file.Open the plan file with XMPie uPlan. In the ADORs area, right click and select New Content Object... and then Graphic.Enter a Name for your new ADOR object. In my example I am naming it cover.Double-click the new graphic ADOR to open the expression window.158 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Right-click in the expression window and select Create Image from Package. Replace the template text with the correct values for your uImage document package. Click the Validate icon to confirm there are no errors. In order for us to view everything in InDesign, we will also need a proof set. Because our plan was created in InDesign rather than in uPlan, we need to first make a few settings in uPlan. Type Ctrl-L or select Link to Sample Data from the Data menu. Click the ... icon to link to your database. Set the Database type to the type which you downloaded from the dashboard. Click the Browse button and locate the new database you downloaded from the dashboard. Click OKXMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 159
Click the Browse button to select the assets folder which was provided in the xm_training_resources_ v3.zip file. Click OK.Type Ctrl-U or select Preferences from the Edit menu. In the browse dialog, locate your modified plan file and click OK. At the bottom of the uCreate Print palette, select to display preview values a Proof Set. Below the drop-down, click the Link icon. Locate your proof set file and click OK. Your new cover ADOR object should now appear in the ADOR list. Hit the F7 key, or select Layers from the InDesign Window menu. Click the lock icon next to the background layer to unlock it. Return to the uCreate Print palette. Use the Selection tool (black arrow) to select the graphic box containing the boat image, and then double-click the new cover ADOR. Your InDesign document should now show the personalised image for the first recipient. If you created a proofset with more recipients, you should be able to scroll through the proof set to see the other samples. Type Ctrl-S or select Save from the InDesign File menu. From the uCreate Print menu, select Export. Create a Document Package (DPKG). In the uProduce dashboard, return the to the relevant Account and Campaign. We now need to upload both the revised InDesign DPKG, and the new Photoshop DPKG. Click the Documents link in the left-hand list.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 161
Click the New button. Click the Browse button and select your cover.dpkg file. Click OK. Click the Upload button to add the new document to the server. Click the Close button, or click the Documents link in the left-hand list. Click the name of your existing invitation postcard document. Click the Check out button. Click the Check in button. Browse to your new Document Package DPKG. Click OK. Click the Upload button to update the document on the server. You can now proof/process the document. Additional information and notes Note that if you Dynamic Print in InDesign using the proofset, the Response URL will not appear since it is only available when connected to the Port. Also, with uImage, you cannot use the Port on the desktop – only on the server. This is because there is no mechanism to return the personalised images to the desktop for use in production.Adding uImage on Demand to a cross media websiteIf you have followed the previous section and created a uImage ADOR object, you can also use this imagein the campaign website by using the following process. Step by step instructions The first step is to make a more realistic size image for use on the web. Open the cover.psd file using Photoshop. Type Alt-Ctrl-I or select Image size from the Image menu. Set a Resolution of 72 pixels/inch. Set a Width of 316 pixels. (With the information at the top of the panel you can see that the image will be significantly smaller and more optimised for use on the web.) Click OK.162 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Type Shift-Ctrl-S or select Save As... from the File menu. Save this Photoshop document as coverWeb.psd. From the File menu, select Automate and then Export XMPie DPKG... Click Save. The default DPKG name coverWeb.dpkg is fine. Choose the same settings that we used in the previous section, and click Export. Browse to the uProduce dashboard and login. Go into the Travel Account and the Travel Campaign. Click the Documents link in the left-hand list. Click the Upload button. Click the Browse button. Select your coverWeb.dpkg file and click OK. Click the Upload button. Click the Plan link in the left-hand list. Click the name of your plan file. Click Checkout to lock the file and notify others that you are working on the plan. Click Download to download a copy of the plan file to your computer. Open the plan file with uPlan. Double-click the cover ADOR object to open the expression window. Modify your expression so that the Photoshop document package that is used will vary depending on whether the plan is being processed for print or web production. Save your plan and check it back into the uProduce dashboard.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 163
When you are returned to the Plan page, click the Generate button.Select your recipient data source, contacts table, and select All records in the range. ClickSubmit.Generating the proofset for all recipients will ensure that the personalised image is createdfor each recipient. This means that when the customer arrives at the web page, the image isalready created, so there is no delay. Additional information and notes It is best practice to pre-generate the images like this because it reduces load on your servers when there are large numbers of customers arriving at their landing page the same time. There is no need to update the Port this time since we did not add/remove any ADORobjects.Return to Dreamweaver and open the landing.aspx page.First, we need to copy a new image to the website. This image will be used as a placeholderand be displayed while the personalised image is created for any new self registered orreferred recipients.Locate the Images for web changes folder in the XM_tutorial_resources_v4 folder. If you are using a Windows computer, you can select the newMainPhoto. jpg, and drag and drop it into the images folder in Dreamweaver Files palette. If you are using a Macintosh, you will have to copy the files from this folder to the imagesfolder inside the website folder or which ever folder that you selected as the web root whenyou imported the site configuration file into Dreamweaver.164 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Click on the existing boat image at the top of the landing.aspx page. Hit the Delete or Backspace key to remove the image. While the text cursor is still in the same location on the page, click the Snippets button on the uCreate XM tool bar and select uImage on Demand... Select the cover ADOR. Check the box to show another image while the file is being created. Click the Browse button. Select the newMainPhoto. jpg from the images folder. Click OK to select it. Click OK to close the dialog. Save your revised landing.aspx page. Synchronise your remote server to upload the new image and revised files to the production server. Test browsing to your live campaign website as a known recipient, and also test referrals or self registrations to ensure that new personalised images are created on demand. Additional information and notes Using the same image as the placeholder for the personalised image can be subtle. Depending on your campaign, you may prefer to create an animated gif placeholder image which includes rotator or similar effect to draw attention to the fact the image has not yet loaded.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 165
Campaign planning with XMPie CircleXMPie has a very useful web-based service for campaign planning and collaboration called Circle. Circle isan interactive, digital storyboard used to help visualise and plan multi-touch, multi-phase campaigns. There are three different Circle account levels including a free version, as well as Team and Business levelaccounts for organisations with few or many simultaneous campaigns. For more information, visit http://www.xmpie.com/CircleIf you don't already have a login to Circle, I recommend that you email [email protected] and request anaccount. The following steps will demonstrate how to use Circle to plan out this tutorial campaign, and to startcollaborating with your colleagues and customers.Login and start planning the campaign flow Step by step instructions Open a web browser and go to http://xmcircle.com Additional information and notes Circle uses the Microsoft Silverlight browser extension. For browser compatibility you can check system requirements on this web page: http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/get-started/install/default.aspx Enter your Circle Account User Name and Password and click Sign In.When Circle opens you will see a new empty project called Project1.Click on the Plan tab to start planning the flow of the campaign.166 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
From the Toolbox, drag the Print touchpoint onto the canvas area. While the Print touchpoint is still highlighted, type the name of the touchpoint Invitation Postcard. Repeat the process to drag out a WebPage touchpoint and place it next to the print touchpoint. Name the web page RURL Landing Page. Now link up the touchpoints by clicking and dragging from the square handles on the side of the Start node to the Print touchpoint. Repeat and link the Print touchpoint to the WebPage touchpoint.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 167
Click on the Information icon on the Print touchpoint to enter some information about theprint postcard. When done, just click back on the Canvas to close the Information dialog. You will notice that the Information icon now remains highlighted to show that there is information available.Adding design mockups Step by step instructions Click on the Mockup icon on the Print touchpoint to upload a design concept or mockup for the print postcard. When the dialog appears, click the Add Mockup button.Browse to the images for Circle mockups folder that is provided in thexm_training_resources_v3.zip.Select one of the invitation postcard jpg files and click Open to upload the file to Circle.Repeat to upload the other two invitation postcard design mockups. You should now see all three designs in the mockup dialog. Click the canvas area to close thedialog.168 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
You should now see the Mockups icon is highlighted to show that there are mockups available to view. Drag out another WebPage touchpoint for the Update details page. In the Tool bar, click Enhancers. There are many additional icons or nodes you can use in your diagrams to help your customer visualise what is happening. In the Tool bar, click Actions. After the Update Details touchpoint, drag out an Update action. Continue to drag out items from the Tool bar to document the flow of the campaign. Of course there is no final or right way to create the flow diagram. It is totally flexible for you to add descriptions and enhancers how ever you like. And of course for your colleagues and customers to comment on and contribute. Here is how I visualise the tutorial campaign: If you run out of room on the Canvas, you can use the zoom tool in the lower right-hand corner. Also, you can reposition the Canvas by clicking and dragging the Canvas itself. And, you can move around touchpoints and enhancers also by dragging them either individually, or by using shift-click to select additional ones. When you are happy with your campaign diagram, click the File tab and select Save.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 169
Enter a name for your Circle Project, and click Save.Inviting colleagues and customers to collaborate Step by step instructions Now that your project is saved, you can invite your colleagues and customers to review and comment on the campaign. Enter the To email address of the person you would like to invite to review the campaign. Select the Roles that the new person will have. In the example below, John will only be able to review and comment on the project, and he will not see or be able to access the Build and Plan tabs in Circle. Click the Send Invitation button to send the email.170 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Posting and reading comments Step by step instructions Also, now the project has been saved, you can access the Comments icon on each of the diagram nodes. The comments are very helpful for feedback from customers and colleagues regarding the project diagram, and design mockups etc.Linking Circle to your uProduce server Step by step instructions After you create your print templates in uCreate Print, and upload them to the uProduce server, you can link Circle to the actual template document so that your customer can see and comment on sample PDFs created from the live InDesign file that will be used in production. Also, when you create the Cross Media websites using the RURL Wizard, you can also enable customers to preview the sample recipient data in the live website. Additional information and notes The ability to link Circle to you uProduce server is a feature of the Team or Business Circle Accounts only. – It is not possible with the free edition of Circle If you have closed the browser window, open a web browser and return to Circle – http:// xmcircle.com Login, then select Open from the File tab.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 171
Click on the name of your project to open it again. Click on the Build tab. Click the Add button in the Toolbox.Select the name of your uProduce System. Additional information and notes If your uProduce System is not listed, click the Tour icon in the top right of the Circle banner, and review the Agent Installation video.Enter your uProduce dashboard User name and password.Click the Connect button. After successfully connecting, select the Account and Campaign where you are creating thecampaign in your uProduce server.Click OK.172 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
After connecting, you will see any Documents and Websites that are created in that Campaign. At this point, we don't have any Emails or Reports. We will look at these later in the tutorial after we have created them..Creating a set of sample recipients Step by step instructions Before we link the Touchpoints to the uProduce server, we need to set some sample recipients. Click the Sample Recipients button.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 173
In this tutorial, we only have two variations of the design based on gender, so we only needto provide two sample recipients – one for males and one for females. In our test database, our first two recipients are Jane (f ) and Jerry (m), so we can choose to select just the first tworecipients. Click Next.Click << button to hide all ADORs. Click on the Gender ADOR object and drag it over to theright-hand column. Also drag over the Firstname ADOR. Click Next.Click on the first recipient, and shift-click to select the second recipient. When both recipientsare highlighted, click Finish.174 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
We now have a drop-down to enable us to select between our two different document variations when we are previewing the campaign.Binding print documents to touchpoints Step by step instructions The next step is to bind our touchpoints to the different items in the uProduce server. Click on the Invitation Postcard touchpoint. It will be highlighted with a blue border to show it is selected. Right-click on the invitation postcard listed under the uProduce Campaign. Select Bind. After binding the document to the touchpoint, you will notice that the name of the touchpoint changes from black to blue, and it is now clickable. Additional information and notes The first time you click the link to preview the live document, it will take a little while for your uProduce server to create the PDF and for it to be uploaded to Circle. Future clicks will be much faster as Circle will simply return the PDF which it has cached.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 175
NOTE: Special attention and warning It is recommended that you only select test recipients as the ones used for samples in Circle. This is for two reasons: 1) Personal information such as the address and contact details could be shown to reviewers. 2) When previewing the websites, all features are fully functional including any event-triggered emails. With this tutorial campaign it is not an issue, but remember to put some test recipients in your data for testing your future live campaigns. Select the PDF Coupon touchpoint, right-click the coupon document in your uProduce campaign, and select Bind.Binding RURL websites to touchpoints Step by step instructions Select the RURL Landing Page touchpoint, right click the Travel Campaign website in your uProduce campaign, and select Bind. From the File tab, select Save, or click the disk icon just below the File tab. Wait a moment until you see the Saved successfully confirmation. Now, test previewing your documents and website. Change the sample recipient and preview the other gender version of your documents and website. Add some Comments to the touchpoints to email and update everyone collaborating on your campaign about the new \"live\" previews being available for review.Binding email activities to touchpoints Step by step instructions After you have created Email Activities in the uProduce Dashboard, you can also link them to Circle so your customer can preview the email. Additional information and notes As you are adding new print documents, email activities or websites to uProduce, you may need to refresh Circle to see them. To refresh the listing in Circle, go to the Build tab click to select the Travel Campaign, then right-click and select RefreshTo link your email activity to a touchpoint in Circle, click on the Build tab.176 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Click to select the Invitation email touchpoint. Right click on the followup email Email and select Bind. You will see that the text in the invitation email touchpoint changes from black to blue and can now be clicked to test the email. With Circle, you can click View in browser button to open the email document in the browser, or you can add and select specific email addresses and click Send to send the email to so you can check how the email appears in different email clients. Remember that you can also select different sample recipients from the drop-down to view the different versions of the email based on your Plan file's ADOR logic or business rules. Remember to Save your changes, and to add some Comments so that your collaborators know that there is something new to review in the project. Binding Marketing Console reports to touchpoints Click to select the Invitation Postcard touchpoint. Right click on the Invitation Postcard Sent report and select Bind.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 177
You will now see that the Report icon is highlighted on the touchpoint to show that there is areport available. You can click the icon to view the report. Bind the other reports to the touchpoints which are most relevant for them. For example, bind the Cruise website visitors and 10 day landing reports to the RURL Landing Page. From the File tab, select Save, or click the disk icon just below the File tab. Wait a moment until you see the Saved successfully confirmation. Now, add some comments so that your collaborators can come back and review your work.Disabling caching in uCreate XM user controlsWhen the recipient visits his/her response URL, uCreate XM caches the ADOR values for 30 minutes. This caching mechanism is designed to optimise performance and reduce server load. Of course wherethe recipient data is updated via the uCreate XM controls, both the database, and the local cache areupdated. So, in general, there is no need to understand or change this caching behaviour. However, in some web applications you might have a situation where the recipient database is beingupdated via a mechanism that is external to uCreate XM functionality. In such cases – uCreateXM isunaware that changes are being done to the data. In this situation, you may experience an issue wherethe data displayed to the recipient is old cached data which has not yet been refreshed from thedatabase. In version 6.2 of uCreate XM there is a new mechanism which enables you to disable the local cache on aspecific page so that the ADOR information is always refreshed from the database ever time the page isloaded.178 Cross Media Tutorial XMPie Training
Step by step instructions Open the required page in Dreamweaver. Switch to code view and identify the uCreate XM user control which is getting the data – the control action will be GetADORs. Add an additional parameter to the user control: UseCache=\"false\" Save the page and upload it to the web server. This page will now reload the ADOR values every time the page is visited. Additional information and notes Because of the additional network traffic and server load, it is recommended to only make this change on pages where needed. – For example where the database is being updated outside of the uCreate XM environment.XMPie Training Cross Media Tutorial 179
