Pure Passion - Let’s Celebrate and by Anika Plowden-Corentin Category: Traditional Characters Local Heroes Description: I have always been intrigued by the similarity between the movement of the hummingbird and the bélé dancer. This piece depicts my interpretation of the bélé dancer, the way it mirrors her energy, movement and splendour. The Dancing Belle represents the ability of humans, in this context, women, to move beyond and soar. This piece is symbol- ic of one's ability to triumph in the midst of seemingly insurmountable situations. It also connotes, the importance of aligning oneself to service and a cause that speaks to your soul. It stands in solidarity with others and celebrates their successes... Dawn by Marissa Richards Category: Historic Physical Structures and Landmarks Description: The piece is entitled ‘Dawn’ crafted to reflect the excitement and promise of our Independence Day in 1962. While I was wary of being too literal I found myself inspired by two main themes or ideas; the Spirit of Trinidad, symbol of a female dancer (my interpretation) a once popular piece of jewelry in Trinidad and Tobago and the lines of one of our National Songs ‘Our Nation’s Dawning’. While the Spirit of Trinidad is extended and in full flight, my interpretation is her at her dawn; pregnant with promise, limbs slightly elongated and awkward, face pensive as she contemplates her future while the citizens look on at midnight.
