3 President’s Address Greetings to you our returning members and a warm welcome our new members and first-time attendees. In 2019-2021 WIAOTT navigated unchartered waters to survive and soar above the challenges that came with Covid-19, thanks to a highly motivated, multi- talented and dynamic Executive Team. Almost immediately after the last Annual General Meeting, I, together with the new Team, Vice-President, Nalini Akal; Secretary, Candice Sankarsingh; Treasurer, Lorraine Villaroel; Public Relations Officer, Tracy Thomas; met to plan out the year, was no small feat during the height of a national lockdown. It was the sheer genius and dedication of this Dream Team, however, in collaboration with the illustrious Joy Luk Pat, that positioned WIAOTT in the forefront of the art industry, locally. The year was also not without additional challenges as, due to travel and increased personal commitments, our Secretary, Candace Sankarsingh and PRO, Tracy Thomas were unable to fully complete their terms of office with us. Candace submitted her resignation on March 15th, having successfully coordinated and overseen the rebuilding of our website. Tracy will not continue into the second year in office. We thank them for their service and hope they would be able to serve again in the future. The rebuilding of the website was the first step of a significant leap into technology. We also purchased the art inventory software, Art Galleria, that allowed us to successfully introduce and manage Certificates of Authenticity and create an online gallery that is showcased on the website. This new WIAOTT Online Gallery has allowed us to exhibit the work of our member artists. Each artist can exhibit three pieces of art for a minimum of one month. If you have not yet submitted your work, I encourage you to do so. Our new website also afforded us the opportunity to finally digitize our membership management and has significantly improved our ability to effectively communicate with you, our valued members. 4 subscribed and joined us on the mobile app and are participating in groups on Acrylic, Watercolour, Mosaics, Resin and Student Mentorship. With the mandate to promote and advance female artists uppermost in our minds, we took another technology leap and partnered with IdeaTrek in the US to provide an online e-commerce platform for our artist to upload and sell their entire portfolio. Nineteen of our members grasped the opportunity to beta test this. The Personal Gallery is an option for artist who are not able to afford or maintain a website and will be offered as a VIP Membership for $650 annually. It truly has been an exciting past year! The WIAOTT Constitution, states that the term of service of the President shall be three (3) years. The President may serve for a maximum of two consecutive terms or six (6) years and shall become eligible for re-election after a break of one term. Since I took office as President in 2015, my time as CEO has come to an end. I give thanks and praises to the Almighty for surrounding me with excellent Teammates who made the job enjoyable. Thank you, dear friends, for your support. To our Vice President, Nalini it was so reassuring to be able to consult you for advice. Your wisdom, friendship and selfless love are an inspiration to me. Candice, thank you for your excellent service and support. Kathy, you remain steadfast in your commitment and truly embody the core values of WIAOTT. Tracy thank you as well for your support. Lorraine, you shared your brilliance and your many talents so generously without asking for anything in return. It was a joyous testimony to see how the Lord rained blessing after blessing upon you for your kindness to WIAOTT. Finally, to you, dear members, I say that it has truly been a pleasure to serve as your leader and I pledge my support to the future President. 5 The Year in Review ZOOM TUTORIALS Despite not having a brick-and-mortar space these 26 years, we monetized our virtual space by hosting Zoom tutorials from August into September. They were: a. WIAOTT Certificate of Authenticity by Nalini Akal b. Mosaic Art by Kessa Seale c. Zoom Drawing of the Model and d. Community Workshop on the Artist Registry by Nadya Shah Financial members as well as students received a 40% discount on all workshops and Community Workshops were free. ANNUAL EXHIBITION We applied this virtual modality to the 25th Anniversary Celebration of WIAOTT Annual Members Exhibition, since we had been advised by our hosts at the Rotunda Art Gallery, Red House, TT Parliament, that the venue would not be open to visitors. With the help of our photographer Stephen Bedase, videographers, Damian and Joy Luk Pat, and you, our lovely artists, we prepared for a massive social media campaign and virtual launch, as detailed by our meticulous Project Manager, Joy Luk Pat. 6 Although WIAOTT did not receive the media coverage it had initially hoped for, despite several press releases, there were special mentions and exposure via Good Vibes, Neruki, The Catholic News, and the Rotunda Gallery’s social media itself. We were, however, prepared on all fronts when the Rotunda re-opened, with a few restrictions, two weeks before our launch. We were able to co-ordinate the installation of the exhibition physically and launch virtually with a first-rate pre- recorded Gallery Tour and watch party on Facebook. Marketing reports showed 1097 views of the virtual launch and just over 1,500 on Instagram. Facebook Reach during that period peaked at 21,000. We received commissions on eight sales and other members subsequently reported sales after the exhibition. CERTIFICATES OF AUTHENTICITY The 25th Anniversary Exhibition saw the first implementation of WIAOTT’s Certificates of Authenticity. This is another milestone accomplishment, championed by Vice President Nalini Akal and brought to fruition by Treasurer, Lorraine Villaroel. The exhibiting artists were gifted with a complimentary certificate for each artwork exhibited, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary Exhibition. Certificates of Authenticity are now provided at the request of the artist. The art inventory software, Art Galleria, was purchased to allow us to not only issue but also track provenance (ownership history). Members’ artwork can now be accompanied by secure documentation that leaves no doubt that the purchased artwork is a genuine piece by the artist. As WIAOTT is not an authenticating body, Certificates of Authenticity must be requested by the artists themselves. They are available to all artists, using the order form on the WIAOTT website. 7 NATIONAL TREASURES CREATIVITY BOOK COMPETITION 2021 Funding for the National Treasures Creativity Book Competition was generously provided by the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago in January 2021 to the value of $20,000. Support of the project was received from The Ministry of Education, which gave approval to promote the project to all Primary schools in the country, among students in Standards 1-3. Integral to the success of this campaign was the digital format of the Book of National Treasures, providing contestants with the option to create work either analog or digitally. As such, $7000 of the funds for the project were invested in upgrading the WIAOTT website to facilitate promotion and access to the book. Marketing Consultant and Member Artist, Joy Luk Pat graciously did the work at a discount of 50%. The layout of the book was created and finalized by November 8th with the copyright of both artist and student being preserved. This was done by Stephen Kerry Bedase for a nominal fee of $600. 8 Submissions of artwork for the book were solicited from among the member community through mass email as well social media outreach. Artists submitted artwork from August 28th 2021 to October 10th 2021. The book featured historic physical structures and landmarks, national birds, flora and fauna, religious celebrations, events and traditions, and traditional characters and local icons. All publications were sent out to Curriculum Officers and School Supervisors in all districts including Tobago. The breakdown of the prizes was as follows: • Two Simbans Picasso 10-inch Drawing Tablets each valued at $2000. • Four gift certificates - two at $1500 and two at $1000 from Arnim’s Framing (Port-of –Spain and San Fernando) and Perspectives Art Supplies (Trincity and C3 Mall) • Three gift certificates valued at $500 each from Perspectives Art Supplies The National Treasures Creativity Book was well received, engaging 262 participants and receiving 5948 views on our website up to January 10th 2022. 9 The results of this competition as well as the winning entries were published on our website and social media platforms on February 25th. Journalist, Sandra L Blood, covered the project and her feature article was published in The Sunday Guardian. Parents of the winning participants as well as their school teachers were also apprised of the results. The nine winning students have since joined the WIAOTT Student Mentorship Group on our website, launched on May 29th 2022, and have since received two synchronous art tutorials hosted by member artists Sarah Anuradha Mohammed and Deborah Clement. The young artists also have access to online resources there. Next term we are aiming for four synchronous sessions. ANNUAL CALENDAR The WIAOTT Executive took the decision to print and sell 100 Creativity Planners. based on the submissions received for the digital colouring book “National Treasures” as there was immediate interest and a high demand. 10 fruitful as all 100 were sold@ $100 each. All participating artists had their annual membership automatically renewed in lieu of royalties paid on sales. WIAOTT WEBSITE Our Secretary, Candice Sankarsingh prepared a creative brief for the development of the website. The brief synthesized the interests of the Executive having an online presence and growing its membership. She oversaw the roll-out of the website from 2020 to 2021, leading briefing sessions, kick-off meetings and exchanges with three (3) potential developers to ensure that WIAOTT’s interests and budget would result in a launch product of which it could be proud. WIAOTT’s website is now live at https://www.womeninart-tt.org and of it we are more than proud! The site serves as the official platform for communication and WIAOTT’s global presence. Art Education, history and research play an important part in the communication strategy for the site. The next step is full e-commerce integration. You, our membership community are invited to be involved in the curation of the website content. We would love to have you contribute to our Blog, participate in and create groups or run workshops to add to our Open Educational Resources Thanks to Candice for your diligence as the ideator, Joy Luk Pat, for the hours spent in bringing the idea to fruition and Lorraine for your time and talent spent in tailoring the website to ensure that WIAOTT is sufficiently poised for growth. 11 WIAOTT FILM LAB PROJECT The WIAOTT Film Lab Project was approved by the Ministry of Education and kicked off via Zoom on October 8th 2021. The project was lead by our Vice President, Nalini Akal. Sessions took place on Fridays from 3:30pm to 5pm with around 25 students from secondary schools such as Providence Girls R. C, Bishop Anstey High School/Trinity East, St. Francois Girls’ and Hillview College. The numbers dwindled, however, with the return to physical school. Students were led through stages of Audio Visual production and had the opportunity to be mentored by Nalini, UWI’s Yao Ramesar as well as selected professionals in music and film direction and documentary, namely, Navid Lancaster, Stephen Taylor and Rhonda Chan-Soo. 12 Closure of the preliminary stage coincided with the end of the term and sessions were due to resume on 15th January 2022, circumstances, however, did not allow this. Since then, with the upgrade of the website, the scope and marketability of the project increased tenfold. For the next iteration of the project, carded for March 2023, we engaged member artist and professional grant writer, Tavernelle Wells to prepare a proposal to UNESCO for a grant to fund the project. The grant request was submitted in June and we are awaiting a response. FINE ART MARKET Through the efforts of our PRO, Tracy Thomas, WIAOTT participated in the Fine Art Market, organised by Jacquelin Guzman, at the Anchorage on November 6th, 2021. WIAOTT was well represented with members coming together to share tables which were priced at TT$400. WIAOTT also participated in the Fine Art Market held at the same venue in April. While our artists sold work at both events, we observed that pre-selling on social media and creating work specifically for an art market, was key to successful participation. 13 ONLINE GALLERY In February 2021, we successfully hosted the first online exhibition on our website, The Carnival Showcase. Members enthusiastically participated. This then led to the creation of the current Online Gallery open to the membership. Artists are encouraged to submit up to three pieces for either showcasing or sale. SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING On Tuesday March 26th 2022, a Special General Meeting was held in order to adopt revised By-Laws, researched and prepared by our Treasurer, Lorraine Villaroel. Attendees enjoyed being a part of this historic occasion, asking questions, sharing ideas and voting that the proposal By-Laws be adopted. The new By-laws can be accessed on our website, under Members, sub-heading, Resources. EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT Both the Executive and members attended various workshops on FIU compliance, NFT’s and Sustainability for NGO’s, in order to be au courant with trends within the Art Industry. 14 Looking Ahead Preparation has begun the campaign for The Annual Members Exhibition, Signs. Once again, the Exhibition will be held at the Rotunda Art Gallery and will run from 19th September to 14th October. We’ve added another exhibition on the calendar this year and immediately upon completion of the Rotunda exhibition we will journey to Tobago to exhibit at The Kimme Museum of Art and Sculpture, from the 17th to 28th October. 20 MINUTES OF AGM 2021 Minutes of Women In Art Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago Annual General Meeting Sunday 27th June 2021 Those Present: Halcian Pierre Mionne McKenzie Diana John Nalini Akal Marise Rodriguez Sharmila Narwani Virginia Pacifique –Marshall Oleisa Scott Candice Sankarsingh Marissa Richards Tracy Thomas Kathy Farabi Junnel Lewis Lorraine Villaroel Arlene Armax Kessa Seale Sonia Alexis Ann Stapleton The meeting was held via Zoom and began at 2:00 pm with a welcome address by the President, Michelle Tappin-Davis. President’s Report The President presented her report, highlighting the achievements of WIAOTT since its inception as well as those for the period under review. The report highlighted the challenges posed by the pandemic and the strategies taken by the WIAOTT Executive to transform those obstacles into lucrative opportunities. Treasurer’s Report The Treasurer’s Report was then presented by interim Treasurer, Lorraine Villaroel as the previous Treasurer was unable to carry out those duties. The interim Treasurer indicated that the report had not been audited as the report was not current. She pledged however to have this rectified by the end of August 2021. 21 of the AGM. The President agreed. Clarification was sought as to whether WIAOTT conducted transaction in US currency. The response was in the affirmative citing payments for the use of Zoom, boosts on Social Media posts as well as vital software such as Quikbooks. The Closing Balance as at 30th April 2021 was twenty eight thousand and sixty five dollars and ninety cents($28,065.90). The attendees expressed their approval and the Returning Officer congratulated The President and Treasurer on their management of the organisation’s funds. Minutes of Annual General Meeting 2020 The Minutes of the Annual General Meeting 2020 were presented and there being no amendments, were confirmed by Nalini Akal and seconded by Sonia Alexis. Matters Arising There was a query as to whether the point made about the registration of WIAOTT as an NGO was in reference to Artist Registry or The Ministry of Legal Affairs.. The President assured attendees that WIAOTT is registered with Ministry of Legal Affairs and that it was in reference to Artist Registry, She also said that WIAOTT was liasing with Artist Registry to update its records. A description of gel stamp was requested and the President displayed it so that members could view. An explanation was also requested about the Certificates of Authenticity. Nalini Akal obliged, indicating that it is a document that certifies the authenticity of orginal artwork which would meet international standards of the Art Industry. It is vital for insurance and tax purposes and also safeguards the legacy of the artist. A workshop on Certificates of Authenticity is planned and The President urged members to take advantage of WIAOTT Workshops to educate themselves about the business of art. New Business The President gave details about the WIAOTT 25th Anniversary Exhibition, Radiance. It was to be held at the Rotunda on November 29th 2021and indicated that due to Covid-19 Protocols, there would likely be a soft opening. She also said that the Rotunda would also participate in the jury process as the gallery had its own rules. 22 Elections The Returning Officer, Sonia Alexis, quoted the constitution on the Term of Office of the President, indicating that the President will serve for two terms which would run from July 1st 2020 – June 30th 2023. She then presented Michelle Tappin- Davis as the candidate for President and called for her to be noinated. She was nominated by Marise Rodriguez and seconded by Nalini Akal. Nalini Akal was Nominated as Vice President by Marise Rodriguez and this was seconded by Kessa Seale Candice Sankarsingh was nominated as Secretary by Lorraine Villaroel and the nomination was seconded by Halcian Pierre. Lorraine Villaroel was nominated as Treasurer by Michelle Tappin-Davis and her nomination was seconded by Tracy Thomas Kathy Farabi was nominated by Candice Sankarsingh as Assistant Secretary and this nomination was seconded by Nalini Akal Tracy Thomas was nominated as Public Relations Officer and was Michelle Tappin-Davis and this nomination was seconded by Halcian Pierre. There being no further nominations for any of these positions, the New Executive was welcomed and congratulated by those present. The President thanked the members for having re-elected her. She encouraged artists to continue making art so that they could be prepared for the many opportunities in the art world. She presented the Lisa O’Connor Landscape artist Challenge Trophy which had been commissioned from Hayden Smith, for the WIAOTT Biennial Art Competition and Exhibition for fifth and sixth form students.
