That’s Debatable! Topics for Discussion Situation Reading Seeing my employer for the first time since people started getting sick was interesting. When I saw them, they were wearing a mask. I was also wearing a mask. We had changed the room to give more space between people. The new room was our auditorium, which seats about 300 people. In this case there were only about 13 in the cavernous hall. We were all staring at the open stage elevated slightly so our heads were even with the knees of the speaker. Behind the speaker was a huge projected image of our material we were set to cover. When the speech was over we all clapped. My employer walked quickly out of the room and we made eye contact as they passed. I would normally have had an interaction with them before the speech. In this case I was just a participant. I would normally have shook their hand when they passed. In this case a simple nod did the trick. We were both in agreement that things had went well and that none of this was strange. I thought about how things had changed later that day. Comprehension 1. Why did the room change? ____________________________________________ 2. That’s Debatable! Topics for Discussion Situation Reading Some of the differences between the reports of the Coronavirus from the U.S.A. and South Korea were shocking. The two countries had their first confirmed cases on the same day. You can see the results of the government’s treatment of news reports and the impact the virus had on the nation. The U.S. on the one hand, treated the virus as a small problem. The South Korean government on the other hand was quick to notify the public with a unified report of the seriousness of the virus. That’s Debatable! Topics for Discussion Situation Reading Travelling to a friend’s wedding in New Zealand I started researching plane tickets. Tickets from South Korea to Auckland were a bit more than I could afford. I started looking for alternatives. I found a flight from Kuala Lampur to Brisbane for 400$ USD. It was one way but I couldn’t pass up that 11 hour flight for such a price. I found a 200$ ticket from Incheon to KL that arrived two weeks earlier than my flight to Brisbane. The return flight from Auckland was 150$ so that was not an issue. I found the same flight return from Brisbane to KL and KL to Incheon. Altogether I had found a trip, with minimal planning, that included 2 weeks in Malaysia and Australia on my way to my friend’s wedding. I was ecstatic. The trip was incredibly liberating as I floated around with my backpack filled with 3 individual pairs of each item of clothing I would need. I had sandals, a credit card, my passport, and a phone. That was all I needed. I wish that was all I needed now... Comprehension 1. Why didn’t I take a direct flight? ____________________________________________ 2. That’s Debatable! Topics for Discussion Funny Mishaps True Story It is customary in Korea to bow to others. It is particularly important to show piety to elders and individuals who hold titles of respect. It was a coincidence that happened just the other day that made for an interesting interaction between myself and a former student. I was on my way to class, walking towards our building, when I saw a former student walking towards me. Likely they were not trying to find me, but our eyes met anyways. I continued forward and we had made eye contact just long enough to acknowledge that we had most definitely both seen each other. It was then that I noticed out of the corner of my eye, a tree branch that was hanging quite low. I would certainly walk into it if I did not move my head. I bent at the waist to avoid the tree branch. Just then I noticed the student was still looking at me. It was then that I realized she may have thought I was bowing to show her respect. It also crossed my mind that she may have possibly not seen the tree branch that I was ducking to avoid being poked in the eye. The realization also came to me that this student may have gotten a low score on their final test in my class, and therefore may have some reason to be upset with me. Surprisingly, she returned my duck of the branch with a bow. All things considered, I am pretty sure that my former student believed I had tried to acknowledge her as a former student. Bowing in her direction may have been considered a form of apology for her low score. Or maybe she believed it was just a sign that I remembered her. Her bowing made me believe she did not see the tree and the distance between us being about 5-7 meters, may have believed I was avoiding any further conversation when I quickly turned right and walked in the opposite direction towards my initial destination. What do you think? _________________________________________________________________________________ Have you had a situation like this? _________________________________________________________________________________ 17

That’s Debatable! Topics for Discussion Situation Reading It is normal to clean the house quite thoroughly where I am from each spring. We call it Spring cleaning. When you clean in the Spring it is a cathartic release. You purge yourself of all those things that were cluttering your house. It is really a nice time. Putting away boxes of big, heavy clothing. Throwing out old, wrinkled, worn items. Every now and then you hold on to something way longer than you should. I did this with a t-shirt. The shirt was black with holes around the neck where I had hastily pulled it from my sweaty back as a teenager. Oddly I mostly wore this t-shirt wrapped around my head with the Italian catch phrase which in English translates to “The Army of the Dead”. I had thought the shirt looked cool with it’s black and red lettering. It fit perfectly on my forehead and provided some neck cover in the hot sun. Though black was not the right color to cover your head with in the sun, I still wore it with pride as it was one of my oldest and most dear shirts commemorating my love for “The Army of Darkness”. This spring I threw it out without thinking twice until now. Comprehension 1. Why is it cathartic to clean in spring? _____________________________________________ 2. That’s Debatable! Topics for Discussion Situation Reading Growing up I was not poor, not wealthy. My family wisely moved to a state with no income tax, while working in Boston. We were able to buy a large house rather than live in a tiny old apartment. Friends of mine did not all have the same privilege. No one was poor but some were closer than others. The rich friends I had were all living in one area (Hampstead) and the less wealthy were living closer to where I lived (Derry). I always thought we were all quite similarly blessed with good fortune, but thinking back I can notice some differences between the haves and have-nots. New gear, new clothes, cars, jewelry compared to hand-me-downs, repurposed gear, beat up shoes, and tattoos. The differences are shockingly obvious now. One of his jokes was about the rising population. He said he knew how to get rid of some people. Cruise ships. Sink ‘em he said. That’s Debatable! Topics for Discussion Situation Reading Teaching a University career preparation course I usually ask students this question. Students have to do a mock interview for one of their tests. They choose the position that they are applying for and their partner asks them some random questions. I routinely hear from my Architecture majors that they “would be a perfect fit for this company because I have always loved building things. When I was young I loved playing with Legos”. I have never in my life considered the two linked in any way. I have no idea what this shows other than a complete lack of understanding about the architectural procedure. It is a non-starter in my opinion. Alternatively, I also have students unexcitedly answer that they had gotten A+ grades in courses that would directly benefit them in this position. Who knows who will be a better fit. Comprehension 1. What question would the student be answering? ______________________________________ 2. To be honest, writing this book while taking care of two children with my wife, managing staff, planning for classes, and keeping up with my family, I am stressed. I need to make sure I do my part for my children. I need to be ready for tomorrow’s classes. I need to be ready for our class. What can I do? To organize my workflow and work-life balance I find time when I can. I prioritize my work to revolve around my family (which comes first). If I remove myself from outside chatter (kakaotalk, friends, social life) I have an easy time staying up late to finish my work. I always star my emails when they are important and I do not have time.
