STARS THE POWER POSSIBLE 2020/21 ANNUAL REPORT For The 2020/21 Fiscal Year

A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERS Hello friends. When we think back to our 2020/21 fiscal year with STARS, one word stands out-- adaptive. From wearing masks, to capacity restrictions, to quarantining, to outdoor check-in, to hand-sanitizer, and so many other COVID-19 mitigation steps, STARS continued to adapt to provide safe programming throughout the uncertainty of the pandemic. We are so proud of our staff and the many volunteers who stepped up to the challenges and provided winter and summer programming in a fun environment while always remembering our core value that ‘safety is the priority’. We are delighted to say that STARS didn’t lose a single day of programming because of the virus, while safely supporting our clients and fulfilling our mission during these extraordinary times. Most importantly, our participants did not incur any transmission of COVID-19. While our winter activity numbers were down due to the pandemic, we were able to successfully hold seven camps here at the new STARS Ranch facility for veterans and children with disabilities. The first full year of operation of the STARS Ranch demonstrated it is providing an important service to our clients. In other words, an accessible space where families and participants can reconnect and find opportunities for shared experiences through recreation. The STARS Ranch truly is a place of ‘hope and healing’. Summer programing included our Youth Adventure Camp, Outdoor Explorers, Private and Semi-Private Equine Therapy Riding Lessons, Western Adventure Camp, and Trailblazers for numerous local youths with disabilities. The 2020/21 fiscal year saw STARS achieve our funding goals through the generosity of donors, grants from foundations, and successful fundraising events. The word ‘adaptive’ is appropriate again as the Farm to Barn Gala, Biking the Boat, and the Mountain Challenge took on virtual formats. These events raised over $344,000 for our programs which helps us provide scholarships, state of the art equipment, and maintain qualified staff to ensure a safe and fun experience for all our clients. As we look forward, STARS will continue to adapt as we negotiate the ongoing challenges of the pandemic and relocation of basecamp facilities this winter due to construction at the resort. Yet, one constant is our appreciation for the many people who support STARS each year. Thank you to our volunteers, generous donors, business partners, and the Steamboat Springs community. You all play a critical role in delivering our mission to empower and enrich lives through adaptive recreational activities. We look forward to seeing familiar faces, and hopefully some new ones as we roll into our 15th year of providing life- changing opportunities for our clients. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in 2021/22 as we continue the legacy of Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports. With Gratitude, GARDNER FLANIGAN JEFF MESSINGER Executive Director Board President

OVERNIGHT CAMP HIGHLIGHT STARS hosted a Spinal Cord Injury Camp with Craig Hospital funded by a grant from the Kelly Brush Foundation. The camp was 8 days long held in the beginning of August. The participants were five teens living with a variety of spinal cord injuries. Participants ranged from a high-level injury manual wheelchair user with the use of one arm, to individuals who were able to walk on their own unaided. These youth were all about two years out from their life changing injuries and this camp was the first time that they were traveling on their own to do activities without the assistance and support of their parents. Throughout the camp we had the fortune of having two wonderful Craig Hospital staff to help us and the Program Director from the Kelly Brush Foundation joined us for the camp. It was incredible to see these young men try and excel at biking for the first time, even our manual wheelchair user was able to get out and bike. They learned to kayak and hike, did yoga, all things that these kids weren’t sure they would ever be able to do again. Through the 8 days they were at the camp it was inspiring to see the personal growth and confidence that they gained from the new independence they learned through recreation. Tears were shed from some of the participants when they talked about their experience, of course precipitating empathetic tears from the STARS and Craig Hospital staff. There are barely words that can convey this experience and the exceptional impact that STARS was able to have on this particular group of participants.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Scott and Laura Sallah have made volunteering for STARS a family affair. Scott began volunteering for STARS in the 2019/2020 ski season. In his first year he gave STARS and our participants 124 hours of his time. Scott is a valuable resource for STARS and very dependable. Scott is also one of the volunteers that if we are in a bind, we can call him, and he rarely says no. With the time and devotion Scott displayed in his first year he earned rookie of the year honors for the 2019/20 ski season. Laura began teaching with STARS in the 2020/2021 ski season. She excelled in all her training clinics. Laura really took a special interest in Visual Impairment (VI) guiding and volunteered for all our VI camps last season as well as a few private VI lessons. In Laura’s first year she volunteered a total of 161 hours helping STARS fulfill our mission. This time and dedication also earned Laura rookie of the year honors last season. Thank you Scott and Laura! LOOKING TO VOLUNTEER WITH STARS? Volunteering with STARS is a fun and rewarding experience that is a great way to give back to the community. 2020/21 BOARD OF DIRECTORS JEFF MESSINGER, President STEVE TOBER GAIL JENSEN, President Emeritus TRISH SULLIVAN SCOTT ABELL, Treasurer JILL BOYD CHARLENE ROSENBLATT, Secretary The STARS Board meets every other month. “Thank you for allowing our family the opportunity to participate in your ski program. While the instructors provided amazing ski instruction, the value of their time together far exceeded learning a sport. The boys developed a greater sense of self confidence, pride, and freedom. While COVID has devastated many families globally, the special needs community has experienced the cascading negative impacts. We have experienced loss of in person therapy, resources, and a feeling of self determination as we are just waiting to resume life. This program could not have come into our lives at a better time – providing much needed support and pure joy. A huge thank you to everyone for all that you do! We are truly grateful!” The H. Family
