Christ The King Knanaya Catholic Church, New Jersey 67 Fitch St, Carteret, NJ 07008 Faith It is likely that, as Christians, you are already aware of what faith is and, more importantly, what it means to walk by faith. However that is just the first layer. The next step to living a life towards sainthood is asking yourself a very important question: What does faith do? Our Lord is meticulous and does everything in a particular order. According to the Word of God, the first thing faith does is heal. “Then Jesus answered her, ‘Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.’ And her daughter was healed instantly” (Matthew 15:28). Jesus does not fulfil this woman’s request immediately, although she asks multiple times. Yet she stays persistent in her request to the Lord. She never faltered and never gave up. After testing her faith and seeing the strength of it, the Lord granted her request and her daughter was healed. All because of this woman’s faith. After healing, one needs to regain their strength, which is the next thing faith does. Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” This strength does not all come at once. It takes time and patience because we are fighting a battle throughout the duration of our lives, and our faith is constantly making us stronger and stronger. As we get closer to God, the spiritual battles become more difficult. Therefore, we will need more strength to fight. As our faith increases, so will our strength. The third task of faith is to help us grow. Just as a tree grows from a seed into a majestic tree, faith grows within the healed and strong and multiplies, allowing for the growth of the Church. Saint Matthew instructs us to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). Faith is like a fire; we are called to spread it. We are called as disciples to make more disciples, allowing our Holy Church to grow. Love multiplies; just as the love of a husband and wife leads to their multiplication – their children – so our love as disciples of God should lead to the growth of the Catholic Church and Christian faith. Once faith has spread and grown, it then transforms. Titus 3:5 states, “He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Through faith, the Holy Spirit transforms each of us into weapons for the Kingdom of Heaven. This transformation is only possible through the Holy Spirit. The journey of faith is a difficult one. As Christians on a difficult journey, we undoubtedly need help to be healed, strengthened, grown and transformed. The Holy Spirit is our warrior, helping us to be reborn in faith. In Acts 2, we see this transformation was necessary for the apostles as well. Although he walked with Jesus for over three years, following Him, travelling and performed miracles with Him, Peter’s character did not change until the Holy Spirit changed him at Pentecost. We are all Peters, and we all need the Holy Spirit for a holy transformation in our lives – our very own Pentecost, if you will. Acts of faith are not enough. And of course, our second helper is Mother Mary, the Queen of Faith. When the angel appeared to her at the annunciation, telling her remarkable and truly unbelievable news, she had no doubt in her heart. Rather she said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). As the true epitome of humble faith we must pray for her intercession so we may have an increase in faith and work as disciples for the glory of God’s Kingdom. This Pentecost, may we set the world on fire. By Jeni Kurian Malika Page | 2 Issue 3 – Jun 2020

Christ The King Knanaya Catholic Church, New Jersey 67 Fitch St, Carteret, NJ 07008 The Gift of Time and Quarantine Last week I had to quickly go back to my classroom for a couple of minutes to pick up something. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was the wooden date keeper that showed today's date. It showed Friday, March 13th. I felt like I was looking at a time capsule. No one was in that room since Friday, March 13th, when the decision to close schools was made. How much has changed in our day to day life since March 13th? As a teacher, I have the type of work where as much as I have to be available to my students, I do not have to “log in and off” like many other work from home professionals do. It is a blessing and a curse as it has challenged my time management. I have so much control of how I use my time during the day (with the caveat of course of a 3 year old who is excited to have his mom home all the time now!) So as much as balancing family/work life is more of a challenge, God has truly blessed me with more time to spend with him than I had when life was what it used to be. Don’t get me wrong. I miss travelling and visiting places, but I guess the “homebody” in me was also relishing this time. Since Friday, March 13th, I have been able to reflect on the precious gift that time really is. Not because I am good at it, but because I struggled to manage my newfound time at home. To be honest, I have been struggling with easily wasting so much time on my phone. The peak of my awareness of the gift of time occurred during the end of the first two weeks of quarantine. I remember getting hooked on the show The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel on Amazon Prime. It’s just so easy to click “next episode”. In fact, it was after finishing those seasons so quickly that I recognized how gross I felt after spending all that time on my phone when my family thought I was asleep. And I compromised my time the next day due to staying up late into the night. It was through that experience that I knew God telling me that I can do better. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with TV and shows, but binge watching rarely feels good for your physical body or soul. However, I do know that many peers can relate. This is an example of a pleasure that feels good at the moment, but when it’s over I don’t always feel too good. (Unlike exercise and prayer, which I often struggle to start, but am so happy I did it when it’s over!) Thank God we have a loving and merciful Abba Father. As much as I felt ashamed, and guilty for wasting all that time over a show, I am reminded that nothing I do can ever separate us from the love of our Father in Heaven who not only sees how his daughter struggles, but embraces me in my weakness. It is in that recognition of my weakness that I realize how much I need God’s unconditional love (2 Corinthians 12:9). So we set some screen limits to help decrease my phone time. I started listening to sleep prayer meditations on an amazing Catholic prayer app called Hallow before I fall asleep. Now we have Mass present to us online whenever we want. On the good days when I can start my day with Jesus, the Mass, reflecting on HIS word, I am so happy that happened. (Similar to exercise too...because endorphins really do work!) Some days are honestly better than others. I am grateful that the “foodie” in me has had more time for kitchen experimentation, organizing our clothes/the pantry, connecting more with relatives outside the USA, reflecting on my own mental health this past year, and especially reflecting on my vocation as a wife, mom and teacher. For me writing has been my medium of reflection. Whether I am praying to God or reflecting on my experiences, writing has allowed me to organize the chaos of my thoughts. I have benefited from the time that has been allotted during this historic time for our country. I raise my hats to those of you learning new skills and I encourage you to not waste this time. Get on YouTube and learn something new! Use your family to help keep you accountable. I have students who have learned how to do woodwork, repair things, even do good Tik Tok challenges (as long as they are appropriate!) I would be remiss if I did not recognize how good we have it at home. I am not on the frontlines fighting COVID-19. I am safely at home. We have what we need and we have each other. I have been so impressed with the solidarity and gratefulness of our essential workers at this time. We have amazing people in our community that have fought through Coronavirus. This time has been difficult for so many, so it’s especially important that we appreciate the true value of time. How has God been asking you to use your time? What do you prioritize during your day? - By Alvina James Kooplikkat Page | 3 Issue 3 – Jun 2020
