Flowing virtuallystraight east just south of the Manitoba / Nunavut borderinto Hudson Bay, the river starts in the Precambrian Shieldforest and changes dramatically as you approach the bay.The forest shrinks into taiga, known also as \"the Land of Little Sticks,\" beforedisappearing completely. The Fond du Lac is a fly in, fly outriver accessible only by float planes, as there are no roadaccesses. This remote wilderness region is known for fishing, moose, bear, caribou, timber wolves and fast moving water.Parts of the Fond du Lac passes through the “parkland” of the boreal forest ecozone andflows through picturesque sandstone gorges. Many of the rapids flow over rocky ledgesmaking the whitewater unique. Other parts of the river flow through marshy areaswhere moose and caribou roam. Stunted jack pine with some black spruce and whitebirch dot the shore. The trip starts by flying to Durant Lake northwest of the community of Points North. Atthe end of our expedition the floatplane will pick us up again just past Burr Falls on BlackLake.Other highlights include: fantastic beach camping, class I & II rapids and the possibility ofseeing abundant wildlife along the river edge. The fishing is spectacular!Map maker and explorer David Thompson paddled this river in the late 1700s. With hisaccount in hand it is still possible to find his camping spots and other interesting eventsalong the route.
