Everything that goes the way I want it to or not, I can’t blame on any externals. My life is a result of my mind. -The Writer Erin

The 7 Hermetic Laws The Kybalion is an early 20th century analysis of an These laws aren’t only present in all Earthly ancient work by Hermès Trismegistus, who was and cosmic phenomenon. They are also believed to be a reincarnation of the Egyptian god, present in us, as humans, too. These laws are Thoth. It’s unclear whether or not Thoth was a simply the language of the universe. Law #1 Mentalism Mentalism, the first of seven Hermetic laws, is a perfect first law because it sets a strong foundation for the power of the mind. Every part of our life experience takes place in the mind. We live in what’s called a holographic universe. That means everything we think we are experiencing as external to us are really projections happening inside our minds. Not only that, but with a hologram, each “piece” contains the entirety. This means inside of us, in our minds, resides the entirety of the universe. Think about it. Our plans, memories, dreams, desires, stories about the present, and ideas about self and others all take place inside of our minds. Even our addictions to the regrets, humiliations, traumas, and resentments of the past are all mental. Our beliefs create our perceptions about what we think we are seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting, and touching. It’s why a set of twins growing up in the same household, schools and community remember past experiences differently. The good thing about knowing the law of mentalism is knowing our power. Through changing our subconscious beliefs we change our experiences. Mentalism is actually how magic and the law of attraction work. Through consistent, repetitive visualization of a thing, it eventually becomes a belief. A belief isn’t just some imaginary breeze floating around in our brains. They are more like the cells of a manifestation. Plus, since the subconscous mind can’t tell the difference between a real and an imagined event, it goes to work attracting whatever is in the deeper part of your mind, not just on the things you want. Grab the Kybalion from the previous article and climb into that book. It will help you make better sense of the power of your mind and why it’s importance makes it the first of the seven hermetic laws.

Creating Vibes My parents are masters of creating spatial vibes. When I was a child, whether I was with Mama during the year or visiting my father in the summer, they both undertook the art of using nature, smells, and music to create a sense of calm in a room. Both, like many parents of my friends, used Saturday morning as a day to clean, light sweet candles or incense, and turn up the contemporary jazz or soul music. I don’t know, but I sense some ancestral wisdom in the DNA that keeps up such a spiritually motivated tradition. They seemed to understand that a clean space and some nice smells and sounds created an atmosphere that was more productive and peaceful. Not only that, but my mother is a great decorator. It is through her interior design wisdom and through my paternal grandfather’s architectural digest magazines lying around that I developed a passion for beautiful and great vibes through design. I even create vibes with my altar. As a matter of fact, I feel that the purpose of a spiritual altar is to create a vibration that mirrors the frequency of the things we want. Our energetic vibrations, our feelings, magnetize and attract energy particles and waves of a like frequency. So learning how to be proactive with your vibes is always power. In The Writer Erin Soul Magazine, I intend to share more about how I use music, scents, nature, and even vision boards to create vibes that I like. There are so many combinations of tools that present infininite expressions. These combinations can be a source of good feelings, sensual energy with a your lover, calm for a fussy child, relief from stress, and inspiration for productivity. Stay tuned to learn more and become a master of setting your own vibes.

When I think about one of the Hip Hop classics that’s culture, poetry, vibes, and frequency all rolled into one herbal libation, it’s this one. The Blowout Comb by Digable Planets was and is still one of my favs. Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug, three artsy, street funky MC’s that hailed straight out of Brooklyn, New York in the early 90’s, that blessed is with some dope as philosophies. They were a completely different groove in rap as they didn’t fall into any of the mainstream categories, which at the time all sort of lead to gangster rap anyway. Many rappers even took issue with what they considered to be softness of the group. But they weren’t led by industry standards, but rather the art. This album blended a fusion of jazz, funk, soul, an underground alternative Trip Hop discussing a typical day in the life of a young, Black New Yorker at the time, including racially based police brutality. And this was all before the mainstream media benefited from discussing it and before camera phones exposed everything. I was also very inspired by the swag of Ladybug Mecca. She never relied on sexually objectifying herself for an industry built on perversion and defining women by their bodies. As beautiful as she was, her appeal came more from a sense of an inner radiance and skill for crafty lyrisicm. I love that though the 3 still perform together, they have also created their own original Hip Hop groups that incorporate the innovation to the art that they collectively have always been known for. I will always love this album. It’s one of my vibe playlists for cleaning, chilling and driving, and it will always be an important part of my passion for Hip Hop.
