มิเตอร์มูฟเมนต์เบื้องต้นจะใช้วัดค่าไฟฟ้ากระแสตรง โดยใช้ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกระแส ไฟฟ้ากับสนามแม่เหล็ก ในปัจจุบันนิยมใช้มิเตอร์มูฟเมนต์แบบดีอาร์สันวาลซึ่งระบบพื้นฐานใช้การเคลื่อนที่ของขดลวด โดยปกติจะอ้างถึงมิเตอร์มูฟเมนต์แบบดีอาร์สันวาลหรือแบบขดลวดเคลี่อนที่แม่เหล็กถาวร (PMMC; Permanent Magnet Moving Coil)
