A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE Simple Gifts Held INTROIT For All the Faithful Women WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP One: We gather to worship a God who cares for the oppressed, marginalized, and outcast. All: We gather to worship because we are choosing love over hate. One: We gather to worship because we are refusing to turn away from brokenness in and around us. All: We gather to worship because we are working to bring God’s reign of justice and peace to earth. One: We gather to worship because we are witnesses to the transformation love of Christ. All: Through laptops, smartphones, tablets, and televisions, let us gather and worship our triune God. OPENING HYMN For the Beauty of the Earth DIX For the beauty of the earth, for the splendor of the skies, For the love which from our birth over and around us lies, God of all to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For the wonder of the hour of the day and of the night, Hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light, God of all to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth and friends above, or all gentle thoughts and mild, God of all to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For the good that loves inspires, for a world where none exclude, For a faith that never tires, and for every heart renewed, God of all to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. LITANY OF RACIAL JUSTICE One: God of the Oppressed, open our eyes and hearts…

All: (sung) Oh Lord hear my prayer… One: God, give us the courage to look ourselves in the mirror… All: (sung) Oh Lord hear my prayer… One: God, give us the courage to release our hearts and minds… All: (sung) Oh Lord hear my prayer… WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: …Now let us do what God requires: All: “To do justice and to love goodness and to walk humbly with our God.” Amen. CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST COVENANT In response to God's creating, redeeming, and sustaining love, we unite for the worship of God and the service of all. We seek to know the will of God and to walk in God's ways, made known in Jesus Christ: to love one another, to proclaim the Gospel to all the world, to work and pray for peace and justice, and to live in harmony with all creation. We trust the presence of the Holy Spirit in trial and rejoicing and the promise of eternal life both now and for evermore. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. SERMON ON THE STEPS OFFERING/MUSIC “Perpetual Motion” from Little Suite K. Bohm Wendy Waggener, violin DEDICATION ANTHEM Prayer of Julian of Norwich Cooman SCRIPTURE 2 Corinthians 4:7-12 7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. 11 For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’

sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. SERMON Saints You Should Know: Julian of Norwich Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz CLOSING HYMN When Peace, Like a River (vs. 1-2, 4) VILLE DU HAVRE When peace like a river, upholds me each day, when sorrow like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, you have taught me to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.” It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul. Though evil should tempt me, though trials should come, let this blessed assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and has paid life and blood for my soul. It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul. O God, speed the day that is filled with your light, when clouds are rolled back like a scroll; the trumpet shall sound and the Lord shall appear, “even so”--it is well with my soul. It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER One: …May we not rest until people of all colors, creeds, orientations, classes, and gender identities can rest. We pray, All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
