A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE DIES IRAE Purvis INTROIT And Let Thy Holy Spirit Doc Blanchard WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP One: On the shores of Galilee, Jesus called to his disciples, “Follow me.” All: And the world was forever changed. One: Here in this sanctuary, on this morning, Jesus calls to us, “Follow me.” All: Together, let us change the world once more. OPENING HYMN #68 God Is Truly With Us WUNDERBARER KÖNIG PRAYER OF CONFESSION God who offers us mercy, once again, we have lost our way. You teach us to love extravagantly and forgive one another with grace, but we stay guarded and suspicious of one another. You teach us to share what we have and love our neighbors, but we avert our eyes and keep to ourselves. You teach us to leave our empty tombs and step into the light, but we find it easier to hide in the cold darkness. We know you imagine more for us. Breathe life into us once again. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON One: …You are forgiven. You are loved. You are worthy. All: Let us embrace God’s goodness and receive this grace. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. LITURGICAL SONG Where Children Belong Ritchie This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer and song:

This is where children belong. SERMON ON THE STEPS Rev. Laurel Capesius OFFERING/MUSIC Children Will Listen Sondheim (from Into the Woods) Rena Strober DOXOLOGY LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ the word in flesh born low, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore, one God, Triune, whom we adore, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! DEDICATION SCRIPTURE 1 Samuel 28:3-20 3 Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. Saul had expelled the mediums and the wizards from the land. 4 The Philistines assembled, and came and encamped at Shunem. Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. 6 When Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, not by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets. 7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go to her and inquire of her.” His servants said to him, “There is a medium at Endor.” 8 So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes and went there, he and two men with him. They came to the woman by night. And he said, “Consult a spirit for me, and bring up for me the one whom I name to you.” 9 The woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the wizards from the land. Why then are you laying a snare for my life to bring about my death?” 10 But Saul swore to her by the LORD, “As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” 11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” He answered, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and the woman said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!” 13 The king said to her, “Have no fear; what do you see?” The woman said to Saul, “I see a divine being coming up out of the ground.” 14 He said to her, “What is his appearance?” She said, “An old man is coming up; he is wrapped in a robe.” So Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and did obeisance.

15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul answered, “I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams; so I have summoned you to tell me what I should do.” 16 Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since the LORD has turned from you and become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done to you just as he spoke by me; for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, David. 18 Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD, and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you today. 19 Moreover the LORD will give Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me; the LORD will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.” 20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night. ANTHEM When Restless on My Bed Campbell Chancel Choir Composer's Note: I wrote this anthem for this Sunday based on the unusual text from the book of Samuel, which literally conjures up unease and mystery. And Saul's own troubled mind leads him to the desperate act to consult with the witch. I imagine Saul had many \"sleepless nights.\" The restlessness and urgency of the music evokes the anxiety and desperate hope for peace that many endure from time to time. SERMON Ghost Stories: The Spookiest Scriptures Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz The Witch of Endor HYMN #223 What Wondrous Love Is This WONDROUS LOVE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …All this we pray in the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray these words together: All: Heavenly Mother, heavenly Father, Holy and blessed is your true name. We pray for your reign of peace to come, We pray that your good will be done,

Let heaven and earth become one. Give us this day the bread we need, Give it to those who have none. Let forgiveness flow like a river through us, From each one to each one to each one. Lead us to holy innocence Beyond the evil of our days, Come swiftly Mother, Father, come! For yours is the power and the glory and the mercy - Forever your name is All in One. (Parker Palmer) GUEST MUSIC Avinu Rena Strober BENEDICTION CLOSING RESPONSE A Mighty Fortress is Our God EIN’ FESTE BURG A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing, Our present help amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe With craft and power great, and armed with cruel hate, On earth without an equal. And though this world with devils filled should threaten to undo us, We will not fear for God has willed the truth to triumph through us. The powers of evil grim, we tremble not for them; Their rage we can endure, for lo, their doom is sure: One little word shall fell them. POSTLUDE Postlude Vierne

ALTAR FLOWERS Pastors Jen and Jacob dedicate today's flowers in loving memory of Zuzu, their sassy and snuggly potbelly pig who is dearly missed. HYMN COMMENTARY God Is Truly with Us Gerhard Tersteegen (1697-1769), a German mystic, published this hymn in 1729. He translated from French to German. The English translation is a composite from many sources. Tersteegen gave up a career as a silk weaver to devote his time to his religious calling. Each year he traveled to Holland to hold preaching services and prayer meetings. And he encouraged the practice of congregational singing. Joachim Neander (1650-1680) composed the setting for a text he had written in 1680. Neander made his living primarily as a grammar school teacher.
