OPENING HYMN #306 The Church of Christ in Every Age WAREHAM WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION O God, You who are always doing a new thing, we confess that we sometimes close windows against the fresh air of new ideas, against the noise of other people’s worries,

against the winds of change. God of every place and time, we confess that we often draw the curtains against people who are different, against world news or community concerns. Forgive us our insulation in our locked homes, our shuttered churches, the security systems on our hearts. Open up our lives, and let Your Spirit blow through. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: Even when we close ourselves to God, the Spirit moves in us to open ourselves once more. SERMON What If… Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz “…Constantine had never become a Christian?” HYMN #454 Lord, I Want to Be a Christian I WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …We pray these things using the words you teach us, saying together, All: Great Giver, in whom heaven is found, holy is Your name. May Your commonwealth of peace and freedom flourish on earth. Give us this day bread for our journey, and make us hungry to see the whole world nourished. Forgive us and help us forgive one another. Strengthen us for the challenges that lie ahead. Let us hear Your prophets, and deliver us from our privilege. For Your love is the only power, the only home, the only honor we need, in this world and in the world to come. Amen. AGNES POSTLUDE Agincourt Hymn John Dunstable Carey Robertson, organ Our apologies, there will be no ASL interpreter for this morning’s service. Special thanks to our Media Ministry Volunteer, David Moore. ALTAR FLOWERS On June 25th, 1972, Rev. William Johnson became the first openly gay individual to be ordained to Christian ministry in the history of the Christian church. As a trailblazing minister, he established an important legacy which includes the founding of the Open and Affirming Coalition of LGBTQ-friendly worshiping communities. That coalition has grown to over 1,500 churches in our denomination that have made a covenant to openly support the LGBTQ community. We are beyond blessed that Rev. Johnson is now a resident of Claremont and a member of Claremont United Church of Christ. Today's flowers are dedicated to his historic anniversary as a symbol of our gratitude for his lifelong commitment to sharing the Gospel of Christ and uplifting our LGBTQ siblings and allies to do the same while embracing their identity.

HYMN COMMENTARY “The Church of Christ, in Every Age” Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) wrote this text in six stanzas for a British Methodist Collection. Fred Green enjoyed many opportunities to contribute hymns for special occasions. William Knapp (1698-1768) composed this tune. It was first published in 1738 as a setting for Psalm 36:8-10. It is believed that this is the only one of Knapp's compositions to endure. It is also believed that Knapp was of German descent. GUEST ARTISTS Adam Knight Gilbert is Professor of Musicology and Director of the Early Music Program at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. He received his Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University, and has taught at Stanford University. A recipient of the Noah Greenberg Award (2008) and joint recipient of the Thomas Binkley Award (2014) with Rotem Gilbert, he has performed on historical woodwinds with Ensemble for Early Music, The Waverly Consort, Piffaro, and Ciaramella. In addition to historical performance practice of the alta ensemble, his research includes 15th-century counterpoint, improvisation, and pedagogy, as well as links between the craft of counterpoint and musical symbolism in 15th-century chansons, motets, and masses. Recorder and early wind player Rotem Gilbert is a native of Haifa, Israel and a founding member of Ciaramella, an ensemble specializing in music of the 15th and 16th centuries. Ciaramella has performed throughout the United States, in Belgium, Germany, and Israel, and released a CD on the Naxos Label, and two recordings with Yarlung Records. She has appeared with many early music ensembles in the United States, Brazil and in Europe. Rotem is a Professor of Practice at USC Thornton School of Music where she serves as Vice Dean of the Research and Scholarly Studies Division, teaches musicology courses in Early Music, Renaissance notation seminars, Renaissance and Baroque Performance Practice courses and directs Early Music ensembles. Rotem can be heard on the Deutsche Grammophon's Archiv, Passacaille, Musica Americana, Dorian, Naxos and Yarlung labels. Mary Vanhoozer is a versatile musician who fuses artistry with passion in her many creative endeavours: a professional pianist by trade, she is also an avid hurdy gurdy player, and recently enjoyed her Los Angeles debut with the Ciaramella Ensemble in a concert of renaissance dances. This past holiday season

she released a musical Advent calendar, featuring Christmas carols from the medieval and renaissance times, arranged for hurdy gurdy, violin, and voice. While she is especially passionate about renaissance dance music, Mary is also keen on folk music traditions from Scotland and England (having grown up in Edinburgh) and recently released an album of rounds and canons from 17th century England, arranged for hurdy gurdy, violin, voice, and percussion, called ‘Simon’s Beard.’ When not practicing or teaching, Mary enjoys reading fiction and baking. She lives in Riverside with her composer husband and their dog Penny.
