A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE Aria in A Minor J.S. Bach INTROIT The Gates of Jerusalem McAfee WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP One: When life wears us down, All: Love creates. One: When pain and heartbreak weaken us, All: Love creates. One: When we feel lost and uncertain, All: Love creates. OPENING HYMN Be Thou, My Vision SLANE Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise; thou mine inheritance, now and always. Thou and thou only, first in my heart, Ruler of heaven, my treasure thou art. True Light of heaven, when vict’ry is won may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun! Heart of my heart, whatever befall, still be my vision O Ruler of all. PRAYER OF CONFESSION All-loving God, we confess that we sometimes have a hard time beginning to create. When it feels like the world is pushing against our efforts, we too often set down our tools and give up. When we get discouraged and do not see our own progress, we too often move on and give our time and attention to something else. Renew in us your divine creative energy, and remind us that You are co-creating with us at all times, even when we are unaware of

your presence. Help us to overcome our hesitations and self-doubts and move forward with our own creations. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. SERMON ON THE STEPS OFFERING/MUSIC Nico Franc DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Mark 6:34-44 34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. 35 When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” 37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?” 38 And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? Go and see.” When they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And all ate and were filled; 43 and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men. SERMON Created to Create: Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland “In Order to Create We Must BEGIN” ANTHEM God is Love Campbell This is a new anthem written for CUCC by our Director of Music in the spirit of the sermon series “Created to Create”.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …We pray for all of these things using the words Jesus teaches us, saying… All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. GUEST ARTIST Nico Franc BENEDICTION CLOSING RESPONSE O Christ Jesus, Sent from Heaven WESTMINSTER ABBEY O Christ Jesus, Father-Mother, Spirit, Triune Source of all, Claim our wounded, halting witness; we surrender to your thrall. Alleluia! Truth Incarnate, stir us with your servant call. POSTLUDE Rhapsody in G Minor Brahms ALTAR FLOWERS Today’s flowers on the altar are are given by Man Dy and dedicated to all who have received blessings of health and prosperity. As the country re-opens its doors and masks and social distancing slowly fade away, may we continue to be blessed with good health and more prosperity in our livelihood.

HYMN COMMENTARY \"O Christ Jesus, Sent from Heaven\" James W. Crawford (b. 1936) wrote this hymn as a testimony to the Johannine roots of the UCC. It was first sung at Old South Church, Boston, for its 325th anniversary in 1994. Crawford, minister at Old South for 28 years, has made a regular practice of writing new hymns for his congregation at Christmas and Easter. Crawford was born in Rochester, N.Y. He was educated at Dartmouth College and Union Theological Seminary (NYC), and ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1962. Henry Purcell (1659-1695) composed this music as part of a verse anthem \"O God, thou art my God.\" Purcell was organist at Westminster Abbey, London, England. He was buried next to the organ.
