A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE An Easter Suite for Organ Gordon Young INTROIT This Joyful Eastertide arr. Jane McFadden Choral Bells CALL TO WORSHIP One: People of God, We thought we knew the end of the story: that violence and evil took away the Light of the World. All: But this morning, we sit in the mystery of an empty tomb that should be filled by a broken body! One: We thought we knew the end of the story: that way power and status silenced Christ’s innocent call for compassion and justice and equality. All: But this morning, we sit in the mystery of an empty tomb that should be filled by a broken body! One: We thought we knew the end of the story: that all of creation was separated from our Creator due to our inability to choose love and peace. All: But this morning, we sit in the mystery of an empty tomb that should be filled by a broken body! One: We thought we knew the end of the story, but now let us proclaim a new beginning: All: Love has conquered death! Brokenness is made whole! We are redeemed! One: He is risen! All: He is risen indeed! OPENING HYMN #233 Christ the Lord Is Risen Today EASTER HYMN WELCOME NEW MEMBER WELCOME Rev. Laurel Capesius EASTER PRAYER Living, risen Christ, on this Easter morning, we remember all the heaviness that we acknowledged during our Lenten journey: Shame. Regret. Pain. Trauma. Betrayal. Anger. Hopelessness. Self-doubt. Self-loathing. Bitterness. We did not shy away from our feelings or our pasts. But on this

Easter morning, we unbind ourselves from them and leave them behind like rags in an empty tomb. And from that tomb, we step out with you, alive. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. LITURGICAL SONG Where Children Belong James Ritchie This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. SERMON ON THE STEPS Rev. DEDICATION SCRIPTURE John 21:4-17 4 Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off.

9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” GUEST ARTIST Redeemer Nicole Mullen Alex Taylor, vocalist SERMON Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland (un)faithful: When Even Disciples Miss the Mark “Breakfast On the Beach With a Side of Redemption” HYMN Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! HYMN TO JOY Christ is risen! Shout Hosanna! Celebrate this day of days! Christ is risen! Hush in wonder: all creation is amazed. In the desert all-surrounding, see, a spreading tree has grown. Healing leaves of grace abounding bring a taste of love unknown. Christ is risen! Raise your spirits from the caverns of despair. Walk with gladness in the morning. See what love can do and dare. Drink the wine of resurrection, not a servant, but a friend. Jesus is our strong companion. Joy and peace shall never end. Christ is risen! Earth and heaven nevermore shall be the same. Break the bread of new creation where the world is still in pain.

Tell its grim, demonic chorus: “Christ is risen! Get you gone!” God the First and Last is with us, sing Hosanna, everyone! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER One: …We now pray using the words you teach us, All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. ANTHEM Glory Stephens, Lynn, & Smith, arr. With his father, John, they were the power behind one of the greatest religious revivals in English history. They were the founders of the Methodist Church. Charles Wesley, known as the 'sweet singer' of Methodism, traveled hundreds of miles in the U.S. on horseback, preaching to crowds of thousands, often in open fields or in city streets.
