A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE A Whiter Shade of Pale arr. Ayres INTROIT Draw Us In the Spirit’s Tether Friedell WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP One: The world asks us to be driven. All: God invites us to be drawn in. One: The world makes us grow weary. All: God invites us to rest. One: The world causes us to question everything we create. All: God affirms creation and says, “It is good.” OPENING HYMN #421 We Gather Together KREMSER PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of balance, we confess that we sometimes spread ourselves too thin. We are prone to burning ourselves out, even when our efforts are made with the best of intentions. We admit that we do not always understand or practice the holy rhythms you create of work, play, and rest. Help us take a breath when we are exhausted. Teach us to stop measuring our value in achievements. ASSURANCE OF PARDON PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. SERMON ON THE STEPS OFFERING/MUSIC Everything Must Change Maritri Garrett DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Exodus 20:8-11

8 Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. SERMON Created to Create: Rev. Wally Hoeger “In Order to Create We Must PLAY” ANTHEM Change the World Whitehill PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …We pray for all of these things using the words Jesus teaches us, saying… All: Great Giver, in whom heaven is found, holy is Your name. May your commonwealth of peace and freedom flourish on earth. Give us this day bread for our journey, and make us hungry to see the whole world nourished. Forgive us and help us forgive one another. Strengthen us for the challenges that lie ahead. Let us hear your prophets, and deliver us from our privilege. For your love is the only power, the only home, the only honor we need, in this world and in the world to come. Amen. GUEST ARTIST Wings Maritri Garrett BENEDICTION CLOSING RESPONSE Change My Heart, O God CHANGE MY HEART Refrain: Change my heart, O God; make it ever true. Change my heart, O God; may I be like you. Verse: You are the potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me; this is what I pray. (Repeat Refrain) POSTLUDE Entrada Torres

ALTAR FLOWERS Today’s flowers on the altar are are given by Carol Sayles in loving memory and celebration of the life of Bea Rose (1921-2021) HYMN COMMENTARY: “We Gather Together” An anonymous Dutch patriot wrote this text to celebrate his nation's freedom from the Spanish after a century of corruption. It was first published in 1626.

The English translation is by Theodore Baker (1851-1934). Baker was born in New York City, and received his Ph.D. from Leipzig University. Baker also studied the music of Native Americans. Edward Kremser (1838-1914), a Viennese choral director and composer, discovered a number of Dutch tunes, which became popular with World War I soldiers.
