A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE Processional for Organ Warren Martin Susan Achuff, organ INTROIT Draw Us In the Spirit’s Tether Friedell WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP (Based on Ephesians 2:10) One: We are God’s good creation, All: We are the Spirit’s creative handiwork. One: We are made for good works and great deeds, All: We are made in God’s own image! OPENING HYMN #462 Creating God, Your Fingers Trace PROSPECT (verse 1: Choir, verses 2-4: ALL) PRAYER OF CONFESSION Imaginative God, we confess that sometimes we allow our creativity to lay fallow. We do not nourish it and tend to it and let it emerge wildly the way You designed it. Breathe into us Your fresh, inspiring Spirit once again, and allow the spark of creation to ignite within us and flow out freely. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. SERMON ON THE STEPS OFFERING/MUSIC Berceuse Schubert Matthew Keating, cello Jessica Beauchamp, piano DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Acts 16:6-15

6 They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 When they had come opposite Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them; 8 so, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. 9 During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. 11 We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. 13 On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. 14 A certain woman named Lydia, a worshiper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. 15 When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home.” And she prevailed upon us. SERMON Created to Create: Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland “In Order to Create We Must BE OPEN” ANTHEM Gracious Spirit, Dwell With Me arr. K Lee Scott PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …We pray… All: Great Giver, in whom heaven is found, holy is Your name. May your commonwealth of peace and freedom flourish on earth. Give us this day bread for our journey, and make us hungry to see the whole world nourished. Forgive us and help us forgive one another. Strengthen us for the challenges that lie ahead. Let us hear your prophets, and deliver us from our privilege. For your love is the only power, the only home, the only honor we need, in this world and in the world to come. Amen. HYMN COMMENTARY \"Creating God, Your Fingers Trace\" Jeffery Rowthorn (b.1934) assigned his students at Yale University's Institute of Sacred Music the task of paraphrasing a psalm in modern language. Never having done this himself, he decided to complete the assignment as well. This text was the result. Rowthorn was born in Wales, educated and ordained in England, worked as a seminary professor and dean in the U.S., and in 1987 was consecrated bishop suffragan of Connecticut. Eugene Hancock (1929-1994) composed this tune. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He served as professor of music at the Borough of Manhattan (New York) Community College.
