A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE In God’s Presence Jones INTROIT WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP One: God calls us from the desert of despair into the waters of hope. All: By God’s grace, we step into the waters. One: In these waters, we are refreshed by the Spirit of Life and Liberation. All: By God’s grace, we rejoice in these waters. One: May we lift our hopes and our despair, our joys and our sorrows, to our loving God. All: In the waters of grace, we worship our God. OPENING HYMN #438 When Peace, Like a River VILLE DU HAVRE (verses 1 & 4) PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of still waters, We confess that we have stumbled onto unholy ground. You show us the Way of love and justice, but all too often, we follow the path of harm. You call us to join you in your kin-dom of equity, but all too often, we turned away, grasping at power instead. In our words, spoken and unspoken, and in our actions and inactions, we fail to live as you wanted us to. Meet us in the rivers of forgiveness, O Christ, and remind us of your greatest commandments: that we would love you, Great Spirit, and that we would love all those you made in your image - our neighbors, our enemies, and even ourselves. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON One: …the God who sustains you with every breath. All: Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. SERMON ON THE STEPS Rev. Laurel Capesius OFFERING/MUSIC Bridge Over Troubled Water Amiah Adamiak DOXOLOGY LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ the word in flesh born low, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore, one God, Triune, whom we adore, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Joshua 3:14-4:7 14 When the people set out from their tents to cross over the Jordan, the priests bearing the ark of the covenant were in front of the people. 15 Now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest. So when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the edge of the water, 16 the waters flowing from above stood still, rising up in a single heap far off at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, while those flowing toward the sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17 While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan. 4 When the entire nation had finished crossing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua: 2 “Select twelve men from the people, one from each tribe, 3 and command them, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet stood, carry them over with you, and lay them down in the place where you camp tonight.’” 4 Then Joshua summoned the twelve men from the Israelites, whom he had appointed, one from each tribe. 5 Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan,

and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, one for each of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 so that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ 7 then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off in front of the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the Israelites a memorial forever.” SERMON Crossing Rivers: A Step of Faith Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland ANTHEM Sweet Rivers of Redeeming Love Campbell Summer Choir PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER (Adapted from our prayer team, which meets on Zoom right after this service at 11:30am and also Monday evenings at 5:30pm!) Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. ALTAR FLOWERS Today’s altar flowers are given by Man Dy as a gift to each and every one of you. May God hold your hand this week and guide you through any troubles you may be faced with. HYMN COMMENTARY “When Peace Like a River” Horatio G. Spafford (1828-1888) wrote this text as a source of comfort after learning that his four daughters had been drowned when their ship collided with another ship enroute to England. Spafford's wife was the only family member to survive. Spafford was a Chicago attorney who lost all his holdings in the Chicago fire of 1871. Yet he helped evangelist Dwight L. Moody rebuild the North Side Tabernacle. Spafford asked Philip Bliss (1838-1876) to provide a melody for this hymn. Bliss became one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation. GUEST ARTIST After a long and winding road, Amiah is excited to have found a place where she can serve God and others more fully. She has felt very at home at Claremont UCC and looks forward to meeting more people and becoming more involved. She is a parent to 2 amazing kiddos, a musician, a foodie, and she enjoys finding beauty in the imperfections and chaos of life.
