A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE When Sorrows Encompass Me Round John Dowling Zac Sokolow INTROIT My Lord! What a Morning Spiritual CALL TO WORSHIP One: We gather to worship the One who is always with us. All: We gather to sing praises, confess our sins, and be renewed by God’s Living Word. One: We gather to pray for ourselves, one another, and the world. All: We gather to rejoice and give thanks for the blessings God abundantly and freely gives us. Together, let us bask in the reality of God’s steadfast love and unending grace. OPENING HYMN #22 Sing Praise to God, Who Has Shaped LOBE DEN HERREN WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION God Who Offers Us Mercy, We confess that we often worry ourselves sick when You invite us to trust You. We confess that we worship power and wealth when You ask us to live humbly. We confess that we hide our sins when You always offer us grace. We confess that we fear and deny death, even though You promise us eternal life. Forgive our inability to fully connect with You and believe Your Word at all times. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: …This is the love which binds us to God forever. All: There is nothing in this world, or beyond, which will keep us from being God’s children. Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. CHILDREN’S WELCOME SONG This Little Light THIS JOY This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. SERMON ON THE STEPS Rev. Laurel Capesius OFFERING/ANTHEM Old Time Religion Spiritual, arr. Moses Hogan DOXOLOGY LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ the word in flesh born low, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore, One God, Triune, whom we adore, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Colossians 3:12-16 12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. SERMON Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland Havin’ Church: Old Time Religion for Today’s Church The Elements of Worship HYMN #561 When in Our Music God Is Glorified ENGELBERG

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: We pray these things using the words you teach us… All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. GUEST ARTIST Richer Than Kings Zac Sokolow Zac Sokolow BENEDICTION CLOSING RESPONSE Lord, Make Me More Holy Spiritual POSTLUDE Toccata on ‘The Old-Time Religion’ Gordon Young

Special thanks to our Media Ministry Volunteer: David Moore ALTAR FLOWERS Today's flowers are given by Man Dy in thanksgiving for all who are a part of this congregation. It is an honor to worship beside you each Sunday (whether in- person or online)! HYMN COMMENTARY When in Our Music God Is Glorified Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) a British Methodist minister, wrote this hymn which appeared in nearly all major hymnals. Fred Green was an important hymnist in the tradition of Charles Wesley; he wrote around 300 hymns. Charles V. Stanford (1852-1924) taught composition at the Royal College of Music at Cambridge University. Ralph Vaughan Williams was among his students. GUEST ARTIST Zac Sokolow plays banjo and fiddle and sings, playing a combination of old ballads, gospel songs, fiddle tunes and banjo instrumentals. Coming from a family of musicians, Zac grew up playing music from an early age. He started out performing with his father Fred Sokolow as a child, and has since toured around the world playing with The Americans, and with fellow California old time musician Frank Fairfield.
