To our fellows: we commend you all for how rigorously you’ve worked and how far you’ve come in a year that challenged us all. We are not yet out of the pandemic woods, but your dedication fills us with optimism and belief in the power of knowledge and human dedication to overcome the toughest, most devastating crises. To our friends and partners: we at Fulbright Israel thank you for your ongoing support and wish to share with you some of the remarkable ways in which the fellows in Israel are responding to the current, ongoing challenges. His new novel is: Adaf, Shimon. Tongue Untangled. Haifa: Pardes Publishing, 2021. Tongue Untangled is a spectacular journey between worlds that both sustain and threat to destroy each other at the same time. At a certain moment they stand on the edge, a terminal rift between them, holding on only by their shared risk to fall and shatter. Enter the protagonist, who is to close the rift, the rupture that is about to consume everything. The universe Adaf creates is not built upon actual geography or royal linegaes, but on linguistic sequences disrupted by moments of revelation, and collapsing the border between reality and myth. His recent publication is Cohen Almagor, Raphael. Just, Reasonable Multiculturalism: Liberalism, Culture and Coercion. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2021. The book aims to examine whether liberalism and multiculturalism are reconcilable, and what the limits of liberal democratic interventions in illiberal affairs of minority cultures are within a democratic state. Cohen-Almagor contends that reasonable multiculturalism can be achieved via mechanisms of deliberate democracy, compromise and, when necessary, coercion, protecting basic human rights as well as the exit rights for individuals, if and when they wish to leave their cultural groups. It is an attempt to conceptualize developments after the 2008 economic crisis, which emphasized the pitfalls of the Neo-Liberal economic system. In the aftermath of the crisis, new organizational entities evolved, which combined social and business objectives as part of their mission. The book provides an initial portrait of the forces at play in the evolution of the new social and impact economy, linking those to the past crisis as well as to Covid-19 and comparing the emergence of the phenomenon in a varied group of countries. The Last Million: Europe’s Displaced Persons from World War to Cold War. New York City, Penguin Random House, 2020. The Last Million tells the gripping, yet until now largely hidden, story of those left in Germany after the Second World War: Jews, Poles, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and other Eastern Europeans who refused to go home or had no homes to which to return. Most eventually resettled in lands suffering from postwar labor shortages, but no nation was willing to accept more than a handful of the 200,000 to 250,000 Jewish men, women, and children who remained trapped in Germany. His forthcoming book is Pallant, Eric. Sourdough Culture: A History of Bread Makers from Ancient to Modern Times. Evanston: Agate Publishing, 2021. Sourdough Culture presents the history and rudimentary science of sourdough bread baking from its discovery, more than six thousand years ago, to its still-recent displacement by the innovation of dough-mixing machines and fast-acting yeast. Pallant traces the tradition of sourdough across continents, from its origins in the Middle East’s fertile crescent to Europe and then around the world. Unnatural Bird Migrator stitches together disparate filaments of diasporic language as a living quilt of translational refuse, a patchwork-art gleaned and assembled from the pieces of writing and speech we are quite literally taught to forget. The book traverses the semi-permeable borders between doubling and tripling mother tongues in exile, looping these languages through one another and back again in the form of a highly adaptive poetic boomerang that returns from the “other side” of the linguistic threshold already changed. His latest book is No Masters but God: Portraits of Anarcho Judaism. Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2021. Set in the decades surrounding both world wars, No Masters but God identifies a loosely connected group of rabbis and traditionalist thinkers who explicitly appealed to anarchist ideas in articulating the meaning of the Torah, traditional practice, Jewish life and the mission of modern Jewry.
