As the day wears on, Tracy begins to question her feelings towards all the men in her life – George (who suddenly seems pompous), Mike (who suddenly seems likeable), her father (who she is still trying to resent for his wayward behaviour) and Dexter (who she is still trying to despise). After daydreaming about happier days with Dexter on the True Love, Tracy does something she has sworn she will never do again – she gets drunk for only the second time in her life. Her erratic behaviour appals George, who storms off, which thrills Dinah, who then goes to search for Dexter. In the meantime, Mike’s increasing affection for Tracy becomes apparent and they both head off for a moonlight swim in the pool, much to Liz’s distress. When Mike emerges carrying Tracy who is wearing only a robe, and finds both George and Dexter in the garden, George assumes the worst and leaves, this time for good. The next morning arrives - the day of the wedding - and Tracy has only a vague memory of the events of the previous night. More havoc descends but by the end of the day, all is sorted out – George is gone, Tracy’s mother and father have reconciled, the magazine’s blackmail threat is removed, Mike realises that it is Liz who he really loves and Tracy? – well, it finally dawns on her that Dexter was and always will be her True Love. With a wedding prepared and a bride ready to be married, Dexter steps in to be the groom, this time for good, and a swell party is had by all after all! 10

High Society comes to CLOC with an outstanding pedigree. Originally written in 1939 for the Broadway stage by Philip Barry as a play, The Philadelphia Story became a smash hit for its star Katherine Hepburn, who then produced and appeared in the 1940 film version alongside two of the era’s greatest movie idols, Cary Grant and James Stewart (who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Mike). The play was then adapted with Cole Porter’s music and lyrics for the 1956 musical High Society, starring the sublime Grace Kelly in her final movie role, alongside Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. It was not until 1998 that a new musical version of High Society premiered on Broadway, which was similar in plot to the original Katherine Hepburn movie with the addition of several other well-known Cole Porter songs brought in to augment the existing score. The show ran for a respectable 144 performances and received two Tony nominations and four Drama Desk nominations. And in casting designed to really make one feel one’s age, in 2005, a production opened on the West End of London featuring the glamorous, sexy and ageless Jerry Hall as Mother Lord!
