Johnny O’Keefe was the ‘King of e Australian Rock ‘n Roll’. t o Born John Michael O'Keefe in Sydney on January 19, 1935, into a musical family, N Johnny O'Keefe's career took off in the mid 1950's when, together with American born ’s entrepreneur Lee Gordon, he pioneered Rock' n 'Roll in r Australia. Sharing the bill with the greatest names of the rock o era, O'Keefe invariably blasted the overseas acts off the stages of t stadiums right throughout the country with his frantic stage act. c e JOK has been described as 'The Wild One', Australia's 'King of Rock'n'Roll' and the 'Father r of the Australian Record Industry'. He was all of these, but above all he was one of the i greatest entertainers this country has ever seen. D SHOUT! presented me with a number of unique challenges as Director. Consisting of twenty-five songs and thirty-one scenes, the logistics of moving the many set pieces on and off the stage as well as incorporating dozens of dance routines into the action was both an enormous challenge and also highly rewarding. What you will see tonight is the result of months of hard work and dedication. It has been a pleasure working on an Australian musical and has been fun to perform using Australian accents and making reference to many Australian institutions such as Holden cars, flying ducks and bottles of Sparkling Rheingold. For many of our young cast members it has been a huge learning curve but hopefully we will transport you all back to the 50’s and 60’s and bring back a flood of memories of the Rock ‘n’ Roll era. In preparing this production for your enjoyment tonight, I have derived much satisfaction from the energy and enthusiasm of the cast; a talented and dedicated group of people, always willing to go that extra step and dig deep to find that last little bit of energy … even after they have been dancing for hours at a time. A special thank you to the exceptionally talented Bev Woodford who has worked tirelessly on the music and the dedicated technical crew and design team at CLOC. The best in the business. Lastly, I’d like to dedicate this production of SHOUT! to my mother Margaret Wiltshire, the biggest Johnny O’Keefe fan in the world and my father Roger Wiltshire, who was not going to let anything stop him from missing this production. Craig Wiltshire Director Writer’s Note The success of The Boy from Oz - based on the life of Peter Allen - enthused me with the idea of creating a Johnny O'Keefe musical that would celebrate his impact on Australian entertainment. Having shared the idea with David Mitchell and Melvyn Morrow, who also believed in the concept, we were MMeellvvyynn MM stunned when one of Australia's leading showmen, Kevin Jacobsen, told us he was interested but wanted to open in a matter of months! The deal was done in August 2000 and we orrow, Mitchelll started writing in September. What followed was an intense period as we wrote, edited, re-wrote and utilised Johnny's catalogue of hits to John Michael Howson & David create a story we hoped would be an entertaining tribute to Australia's \"King of Rock 'n' Roll\". We \"lived\" with Johnny day and night until, in just three weeks, we finished the first draft. As I was based in Los Angeles, there were many flights between the U.S. and Australia as SHOUT! was put on the fast track to open at The State Theatre in the Victorian Arts Centre of January 1, 2001, directed by the brilliant (now sadly deceased) Richard Wherrett, and starring David Campbell and Tamsin Carroll. And we did it! The show was a huge success around Australia but it also launched David and Tamsin, who later starred as Dusty Springfield in our next show, as major theatrical stars. The enthusiasm of the Australian public for Nick Enright's The Boy from Oz, Stefan Elliott's Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and our SHOUT! and Dusty has revived the concept of the \"home grown\" musical that can play successfully to Australians and audiences around the world. If David, Mel and I have opened doors for others then we can thank JOK who opened doors for many Australian talents to walk through. The CLOC presentation of SHOUT! has boundless energy and a superb cast. It is a truly exciting production. John Michael Howson Co-writer May 2007 2

Synopsis It’s the mid-70s and Johnny O'Keefe is taking his new fiancée for one last look at The Sydney Stadium, the scene of so many of his triumphs. Soon it will be demolished to make way for the new Eastern Suburbs Railway. Johnny reminisces about the Australian music scene and his life. Johnny O'Keefe was born to entertain. A tear-away at school he turns his back on a solid future in the family furniture business and starts his career singing at dances around the Sydney suburbs. At one dance he meets Marianne, a German immigrant, and falls for her as she encourages him to follow his dream. When Johnny hears one of the first rock'n'roll records - Bill Haley's \"Rock Around the Clock\" - he immediately knows he has heard the music that will change his life. He presents himself to flashy music promoter, Lee Gordon and fights to overcome the obstacle of Lee's not wanting to employ Australian acts even as \"openers\" for the galaxy of American stars who appear at the Stadium. Lee believes Australians do not want to see Australians but only imported stars. Gordon rejects Johnny until an American group is delayed and, desperate for a backing band, he gives in to the budding rock star. In one night O'Keefe becomes a sensation. Soon teens are lining up to see JO'K and fame and fortune follows: A recording contract, a TV show, hit appearances at venues around Australia. However success comes at a price and, to keep up the pace, Johnny starts to use pills. This strains his marriage to the always patient Marianne and almost leads to catastrophe when O'Keefe is involved in a terrible car smash. Desperate for international success he goes overseas but manages to blow a chance of stardom in the USA. Things are no better in the UK where he suffers a breakdown and returns to Australia desperate to pick up a fading career. Unable to cope with the pressure of Johnny's life Marianne walks out as Johnny finds the only work he can get is performing in a tent at agricultural shows around Australia. Although he and Lee Gordon, who was the major influence on his life, had fallen out he is heart broken when Gordon dies. Now he has nobody and nothing. The years pass and Johnny makes a comeback in the 70s with new hit record and appearances at clubs where his fans, recalling their youth, turn up to see the first Aussie Rock Star perform with all the energy they remember. Happily remarried to Maureen, Johnny seems to have found peace and contentment but then..... SHOUT! ends with a huge tribute to Johnny O'Keefe and Australian Rock'n'Roll. He was, says his father, The King of Rock'n'Roll and a man who created a revolution in the Australian entertainment business by forcing promoters to realise that Australians do want to see Australians. He died at the age of 43 but all the acts that followed Johnny owe him a debt of gratitude. 11
