DIRECTOR’S NOTE CLOC Musical Theatre has a long tradition of producing extravagant dance musicals. From well-known spectaculars such as 42nd Street, Singin’ In The Rain, A Chorus Line, Anything Goes and Cats, to lesser known shows such as My One and Only and Steel Pier, CLOC audiences have been dazzled by the large casts, extravagant sets and beautiful costumes that these types of shows demand and that CLOC has reliably produced time and time again. Hot Shoe Shuffle, whilst still a song and dance musical, presented a new set of unique challenges to both the cast and production team. With a total cast of nine there was no room for the performers to hide behind a large ensemble of dancers, hundreds of costumes or an intricate set design. This is a show that is all about performance and technical virtuosity. The script is full of witty one liners and vaudeville-like physical comedy with cartoon-style acting and characterisations. Quite unashamedly a vehicle for dancers to show off their talents, all the performers must be triple threats. They never stop acting, tap dancing or singing the terrific songs that feature almost non-stop throughout the show. Hot Shoe Shuffle overflows with well-known and beloved musical standards by composers such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington. It is a nostalgic trip back to a fondly remembered era for audiences and performers alike, and our cast and production team have delighted in the opportunity to recreate this Golden Age, not only through the songs, dance and dialogue of the time, but also through the accompanying evocative sets and costumes. As a production team, we have been very lucky to have found a cast of some of the finest performers non-professional theatre in Melbourne has to offer. From the beginning of the rehearsal period they have shown complete dedication to their roles and have helped produce a piece of theatre that will impress audiences just as much as it entertains them. The amount of material that this cast was required to learn in a short rehearsal period was quite considerable and they have all risen to the challenge. I congratulate each and every one of them. It has been a great pleasure to work again with Musical Director Bev Woodford and for the first time with the very talented Choreographer Susan Lewis. These two ladies have made the process of working on Hot Shoe Shuffle such an enjoyable experience and I look forward to many more collaborations in the future. With the support of an extraordinary production team - Vicky Horne as Costume Designer (in our fifth collaboration), Jason Bovaird as Lighting Designer, Barry Pearce as Set Designer and Alan Green as Audio Designer, together with the expertise of CLOC’s Grant Alley (Technical Director) and Sandra Davies (Stage Manager) – you can be guaranteed a show that is sure to reach the highest possible standard in all departments. It has been a joy once again. Now, sit back, laugh and applaud at the groan- aloud jokes, the silly plot and the sizzling tap of Hot Shoe Shuffle. Enjoy! SSPPRRIINNGGTimCantas Craig Wiltshire Director Hot Shoe Shuffle is a welcome return to CLOC forTim in his sixth role with us. SYNOPSIS Set in1950s New York City, Hot Shoe Shuffle tells the story of the Tap Brothers, seven hard working tap dancers who find outatthereadingoftheirlatefather’swillthathehasleftthemafortune. Buttherearetwoproblems-tocollectthey have to reproduce their father’s extravagant act the Hot Shoe Shuffle within one month, and they have to include in the act the tuneless, flat-footed, confused, clumsy and slightly harebrained April, who claims to be the Tap Brothers’ long lost sister, who until now they never knew existed, and who does not seem to have a single in-tune singing noteordancingboneinherbody. April’sclaimtobeSpring’stwinsisterisimmediatelymetwithhostilityand disbelief by the pig-headed Spring, and with a range of reactions from the other brothers - pity, bemusement, uncertainty, and finally acceptance. It is left to Max Reinfeld, their late father’s best friend, to teach the boys the Hot Shoe Shuffle within the designated time, to get the brothers to agree to incorporate April into the act and to try to hold the eight siblings together for long enough without a family feud erupting and threatening the act, the family relationships, and crucially, the family fortune. Finally, the Tap Brothers (and sister) rise above the family squabbles, rivalries and tensions to prove to their father and more importantly, to themselves that they have the will, the skill and the persistence to overcome all obstacles and the Hot Shoe Shuffle is reborn. 8

HISTORY of hot shoe shuffle Long before SHOUT!, Dusty, and The Boy from Oz, Hot Shoe Shuffle was one of the first internationally successful original Australian musicals. Firstperformedin1993,itwasconceived,co-choreographedandproducedbyDavidAtkins,whoalsostarredinthe originalproduction. Davidwaswellknowntoaudiencesasamusicaltheatreperformersincechildhood(Mame,Gypsy,Cats, AChorusLine). By1993,Davidwasbeginningtomoveintochoreographing,producinganddirectingandtodayin2008, he is owner and manager of DAE (David Atkins Enterprises), which, as well as producing a number of musicals and music events across Australia, is best known for conceiving, producing and co-ordinating huge international spectaculars, such as Olympic and Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies (Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony, Doha 2006 Asian Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies). David wanted to produce a show that would act as a homage to vaudeville and movie tap-dancing – an onstage live reflectionoftheGoldenAgeofMovieMusicals. HeincorporatedmanyoftheAmericanbig-bandswingstandards of the 1930s and 40s, and with his co-choreographer Dein Perry (who later went on to choreograph and produce another international smash hit and original Australian act Tap Dogs), they conceived imaginative, original and intricate tap dancing routines to show off the skill and artistry of the seven Tap Brothers, and to highlight the multi-faceted talents of the statuesque Rhonda Burchmore, who played the original April, opposite the diminutive David himself, who played the original Spring, April’s twin brother (which provided much of the show’s visual humour). Hot Shoe Shuffle has had several incarnations in both Australia and internationally in world tours, includingNewZealand,Japan, theUnitedKingdomandtheUnitedStates. In1995,DavidandDein wontheprestigiousOlivierAwardfortheirchoreographyoftheUKproductionofHotShoeShuffle. The show has appeared on a stage somewhere in the world at any time for much of its fifteen year life. Finally, after several revivals, national and international tours, CLOC audiences have the opportunity to see the Victorian non-professional premiere production of this toe-tapping, and (literally) breathtaking song and dance spectacular. 9

CLOC audiences may remember David from productions such as Mame, Funny Girl, Sweet Charity, 42nd Street, Singin’ in the Rain and most memorably, Mack and Mabel in 2004, in which David played the tragic silent screen star Fatty Arbuckle. David has also worked with many other companies on both sides of the footlights, including Dandenong, Williamstown and Whitehorse. His performance as Durdles in Heidelberg Theatre Company’s 2001 production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood garnered him a Guild nomination as Best Supporting Actor. In 2003 he directed the Whitehorse production of 42nd Street and the following year, he directed and co-designed the set for Altona’s production of The Wizard of Oz, receiving a Guild nomination for the set design. Two of David’s favourite roles in recent years have been his glamorous turn as Henrietta, one of the Ugly Step-Sisters in Whitehorse’s 2006 Christmas panto Cinderella, and his portrayal of Santa Claus for the City of Melbourne. David is thrilled to be back with CLOC and especially relieved that his role as the only non-tap brother in the show does not have the dance, speed and stamina demands of the seven boys who play his sons. 11
