Summer Task: Drawing Mechanism For this brief we were tasked with cre- ating a ‘drawing mechanism’. We were told to “think kinetic”. With this in mind i looked for things around my home that had a moving component to them. I stud- ied the way things like doors, toys and tools moved and what sort of marks they would create. For more contextual research i looked into the artists suggested in the brief. Tim Knowles’ tree drawings inspired me to chart the movement and kinetic energy of something that is happening organically. I also loved the sweeping motion of these drawings made by willow tree.

To achive this sweeping motion i exper- imented with the kenetic movement of a door by attaching a weighted piece of card to it in order to create a drawing. I experimented with different doors, weights, textures and colours to explore the different drawings they would make. I found the heavier the weight on the card, the more detailed and interesting the drawing looked.

Summer Task: Final Images

Summer Task: Brief Overview I found this brief to be sucsessfull in helping me Understand new approaches as a means of developing content in Graphic Design. As i looked outside of the usual brackets of how i produce my work.

Drawing Mechanism: 4x enlargements For this brief we were told to Take a drawing created by our drawing mechanism and use our phone to photograph and zoom in to visually enlarge the most interesting details and then redraw these marks at a new size. One of our learning outcomes is to Select ap- propriate media/scale/form to realize a concept and i felt this brief helped me do this. It got me to look into my previous work in more deatil and to reconceptualise it at anothet size. For example these details that i have pulled from my original drawing (top left) remided me of micro forms like particles and therefore i remade them at a small- er size.

Project 1: Part 1 After first reading the brief, there was a word that stuck out to me, ‘locality’. This lead me on to noting that i could document workers who play key roles in my community, including my own family members. This means i would be looking for artefacts and themes that resinate with me personally and remind me of a specific work/work- place. As one of the learning outcomes for this module is for students to ‘De- velop analytical skills and contextual knowledge through research and evaluation of their own work’ I have decided to reference an old piece of work I did on caricatures. I felt it would be informative to this brief as it gives an insight into the charac- ters and moods inside a workplace. These designs worked well as I felt I was able to capture the essence of the characters I was drawing, plus it retained a comedic touch. If I were to improve on these designs in response to the brief I have been set, I would focus more on the other imagery that signifies this workplace, other than just the characters.

I have noted down words when taking photos of a specific workplace, that have helped me remember details and even informed my decision on what media and scale to use. For example, these notes from when i documented my mothers art studio made me come to the decision of us- ing monoprint to make the subsequent set of drawings. I thought the effect made by the monoprints mimicked the smokey and cluttered studio. As the theme of this project is Cap- ital, i decided to try and chart the change in economic capital from Brighton (my home town) to Bris- tol (where i’m staying now) through some of my photos/drawings. For ex- ample i was able to get more photos of industrial work whilst out in Bristol than in Brighton due to Bristol’s in- dustrial past.

Project 1: 3 selected work prints

Project 1 (part 2): For this part of the brief we were tasked to select 3 of our 30 work drawings and pair them with 5 images of my class mate’s work to make a zine. When se- lecting 5 of my peer’s images i looked for designs that i not only liked but thought would work well with my own 3 selected images. Project 1 (part 2): Zine layout

Project 2: Capital The first stage of this task was to com- municate high, medium and low capital through the documentation of 3 set locations. As i was quarantining during this time, i could not attend the locations in person. Instead i used google maps to collect my source material. I planned out how each level of capital would be best documented (what format and source material to use). The objects that i would draw to rep- resent ‘mid capital’ are aiming to be comedic and playful in both their style and subject matter.

Project 2: Capital In a morning lecture we talked to a lecturer about small scale house modelling and were taught the basics ahead of our afternoon face to face session. Whilst on campus we made miniture scale models of a select build- ing that we had chosen and photographed earlier. As i was unable to do this due to quarantining i had to use imagery found online. As i had chosen a very tall building to model, i wanted to communicate this through the imagery i had taken of it. To do this i chose a very low angle and used flash to cast long shadows.

Project 2: Capital During a morning lecture with my class we talked about Dutch still life in the 17th cen- tury. I learnt that Dutch Still Life depicted wealth and excess. It intended to remind the viewer of the imperminence of a ma- terialistic life and the inevitability of death. I took this in to account when creating my own still life as i wanted to communicate a morbid scene. In the still life we studied by artist Willem Kalf my lecturer pointed out that the orange in the foreground was off balance and ready to fall and that this was suggestive of an impending downfall. I again used this when balancing the pizza box near to the end of the toilet.

Project 2: Capital For the third and final part of the capital brief, we were told to create a tryptic of GIFs using signage we found at one of our 3 set locations. I decided to use the signage found in an area of LOW capital as whilst in this area i noticed a much higher concentration of gambling and betting shops. After reading an article online i learnt that bookies actually aim to set up locations in areas of deprevation and low economic capital. This lead me on to do some further research in to what language, colour and move- ment these shops use in their adver- tisement and signage to entrap their victims and how i can use it in my own GIFs.

Project 2: Brief overview: The outcome first listed on our module handbook is to ‘Understand a range of processes/approaches as a means of developing content in Graphic Design’ and i feel in this brief i was sucessful in doing just this. I used a more hands on ap- proach during this brief than i had at any stage of the module before this.

Project 3: Creating Capital For this project we were tasked to rethink capital as we know it and create a new currency, our designs could ultimately be used on posters all around the city. I decided to do some research on the prison sys- tem and what currency is used there as prisons usually have their own set of rules different from the outside world due to the circumstances. After watching this youtube video i learnt that ramen noodles are of very high value in prison and are used as a currency due to decling food standards in prison. Some people don’t even like them and use them purely to trade with or even as a show of wealth.

My first step was to draw up some initial scetch- es and present them to my teacher and peers along with my ideas. (sketches of ramen) My peers liked my ideas although they though my sketches didn’t have enough variety and that i should play around with the composition. i took this advice and improved on my sketch- es using a 3D design software called Blender. Using this i played around with the composition of my image until i had 3 seperate images. I then presented these 3 images to my peers, recieved feedback on them and eventually chose a final image to be uploaded for the live brief hand in. Project 3: Brief Overview This brief was sucsessfull as due to the final piece having to be imagery only and no type, i had to think purely conceptually before creating any of my mock up de- signs. This was a new and interesting way of working that i wouldn’t have used if not for the brief.

Project 5: Documenting Capital For this brief we were tasked with creat- ing a catalouge of all of our work pro- duced in the images side of the module. To do this i had to think about how one page would lead on to the other in order for the audience to understand the pro- cess of my work. I feel i was sucsessfull in doing this as i included pictures of what my work was made in response to and captions on each different project giving my work further context.

Project 5: Two double page spreads

Workshop Project: Vector Drawing For this (the first of two workshop projects) we were tasked to create a vector drawing of the drawing mechanism we made over sum- mer. I was new to Illustrator so i watched two of the instruction videos provided. After gain- ing basic Illustrator skills i decided to look for a colour pallet. For this i pulled colours from the drawings produced by my mechanism.

Workshop Project: Brief Overview One of our learning outcomes is ‘to Acquire and demonstrate basic skills appropriate to Graphic Design’ and i feel i was sucessfull in doing this whilst creating a piece of de- sign i am proud of.

Workshop Project: Mini Me For this brief we were tasked to create three different icons at three different sizes that reflect a significant aspect of your character, a leisure activity and who/what you wish to be in the future. One icon for each. For an aspect of my character i depicted a ‘busy bee’, for a leisure activity i chose skate- boarding and for what i want to be in the future i chose ‘healthy’. As the image size for each icon is limited i had to think carefully of how i could encapsu- late each of the three aspects. For the largest of the three sizes this wasn’t a problem as i had chosen a colour pallet for each aspect that i thought represented it well and also i had plent of space to add detail. When i had to depict ‘health’ by 220 and 110ppi i serached online for motifs that were used in the health care system. Hearts, crosses and graphs were three simple and easily animated things that stuck out to me that i therefore used.

Workshop Project: Brief Overview This brief was sucessfull in teaching me the skills to create simple yet descriptive icons and furthered my photoshop skills.

I gained enough skill to create finished pieces of work that i am happy with. In terms of our eighth outcome reguard- ing time management, i feel i have been sucessfull in learning to have a more self sufficient and indipendant work process. This being said there were times where i didnt correctly anticipate the pandemic’s effect on the course. For example, when i didn’t access the essential reading when i had the chance inbetween quarantining. I feel our ninth and final outcome ‘Gain the necessary health and safety certifi- cation required to access and safely use a range of technical resources’ has been made fairly redundant this year as most on campus workshops have not run due to the pandemic. Although i haven’t had the opportunity to access these technical resources, i have done work and research that has given me a clearer idea of which of them i am interested in engaging with when its possible. Learning outcomes: To enable students to: 1. Understand a range of processes/approaches as a means of developing content in Graphic Design. 2. Use a range of methods for identifying and recording source material and visualizing/com- municating ideas; 3. Develop analytical skills and contextual knowledge through research and evaluation of their own work and that of contemporary practitioners; 4. Actively engage in critical debate with their peer group; 5. Engage with their programme of study through practical and theoretical work. 6. Select appropriate media/scale/form to realize a concept; 7. Acquire and demonstrate basic skills appropriate to Graphic Design 8. The ability to manage their time and work independently; 9. Gain the necessary health and safety certification required to access and safely use a range of technical resources.
