50 Santhome Waves After the arrival of Br. Jinto we had our first community meeting on 28th of July. In this meeting we discussed the various offices of the house and the brothers were only too happy to share them. Br. Harjan Pazhayattil is busy with Prejothi Nikethan. Br Ranjit Pulikkan is very actively doing his creative works like writing, drawing, and acting and so on. Br. Linto our gardener is very busy with the seasonal works of the coconut garden. Br. Pauly Madassery our Minister Provincial made the first official visit after the formation of new community. He conducted the adoration and prayers of the day. And after supper we had a community meeting during which Br. Provincial gave us some

Santhome Waves 51 guidelines and suggestions to go forward. Thank you, dear brother, for your fraternal visit to our community and spending a day with us and guiding us in the proper way along the lines of Franciscan values. “THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE; LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT” (Ps 118:24) Even though we were not in a mood to celebrate Onam because of the Corona problem, to maintain the culture, still we too prepared ‘onasadya’ with a very few items in the menu and our neighbouring family shared with us ‘payasam’ prepared by them. Br Guardian and Br. Davis made the Pookkalam and Br. Ranjith made a special design with fruits and vegetables. Br. Sherin, a professional camera man, with his own initiative made a small video clip as part of the memory of our joyful community celebration of Onam. Thank you dear Br Sherin. “...HE TOOK BREAD AND AFTER BLESSING HE BROKE IT AND GAVE IT TO THEM...(Mk 14:22)” Since Corona is very active in our Panchayath, we have not yet started celebrating Mass in our chapel with our neighbouring people. But we brothers solemnly celebrate together every day as a community. WISHING YOU THE FEAST OF OUR HOLY FATHER, ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI WE REMAIN.

52 Santhome Waves Bethlehem Ashram Elinjipra, Chalakudy Showers of Peace and Joy to everyone from Bethlehem Community!!!! A NEW DAWN….A NEW ERA The glimmers of new dawn and new era has slowly crept into Bethlehem community. Yes, Bethlehem community is blessed with new community members. Br. Vineeth has taken charge of the vicar of the parish. Br. Wiljo as the new rector of the minor seminary Brs. Dhil as Assistant rector and Sheline as Dean of studies to assist him. Apart from them, Brs. Paul Dayanand, Antony Paatathil, Shinto Njarley, Cijo Aricatt fuelled up the novelty of the community. Br. Jeson Menachery is there who regulates the economy of our community, assuming the procurator of the community. One who sees now our community will surely pronounce that Bethlehem community has indeed gotten a fresh outlook in appearance and structure.

Santhome Waves 53 CORONA…..GO-RONA As our provincial Br. Pauly Madassery, in one of his visits to our community, remarked that each problem is an opportunity, our community here slowly embraced our sister corona with a tinge of sour and sweet but converted this epidemic time as a time for prayer, adoration and manual work. We told to our sister corona disease to go- rona through daily adoration, prayer here in our community. This epidemic helped our community to spend a bit more time in manual work. If you come to our community you will see the fruits of our labor in the form of vegetables, fruits. Yes, corona became an opportunity for our community to pray a bit more, to work a bit more and to spend with our community a little more. PASTOR….SMELL OF THE SHEEP As Pope Francis remarked about priests that they should be the ones who could recognize the smell of their flocks, our new parish vicar, Br. Vineeth started to familiarize himself with his flocks through house visits abiding with the corona protocol. We wish you all the best dear brother for your future endeavours in the parish and let you be a shepherd who could bear the smell of the sheep. YES… THE ORDER IS GROWING This year our minor seminary is blessed with 13 brothers. Though the number 13 seems to be unlucky for some, it is our golden number this year. We have 8 brothers from Thrissur Archdiocese, 3 from Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, 1 each brothers from Irinjalakuda-Kodungalur diocese, Palakkad diocese respectively. These 13 brothers along with the 5 brothers belonging to second year batch create a lovely vibe in our seminary. Thus the 18 brothers constitute part and parcel of our vocation this year. BRINDISI DAY As the patron of scholars, St. Lawrence of Brindisi has a unique stand in our seminary. As usual we celebrated the feast with a seminar presentation of our brothers basing on a Malayalam

54 Santhome Waves Award winning short story ‘Biriyani’. We could see the visions and missions of our new generation were overflowing when it was presented. Kudos to Brs. Godwin and Aloysius who were behind this seminar. There was a cultural eve which marked the culmination of the feast. Dance, Accappella, Comedy garnished the cultural eve with pomp and color. ONAM….CORONAM The tentacle hands of our sister corona made considerable impact to our onam this year. In the history of our seminary, we celebrated onam for two days with lots of contests, color and mirth. We had a wonderful Onam banquet under our Chief Chef Br. Dhil Konikkara. Thanks dear brother for your tireless efforts to bring Onam mouth watering. Our sister corona has embraced so much so that our minor seminary brothers hesitated to go home for their holidays. They preferred to spend their holidays inside the seminary. EXAM MODE ON… Our Br. Cijo who is pursuing his masters in psychology has turned on to the exam mode. We see sometimes vapors of psychology emitting out of his head. Dear Brother, we wish you all the best for the exam and may the good Lord bless you to pass with flying colors.

Santhome Waves 55 HURRAH….HAPPY BIRTHDAY August 21 was thrived by birthday chants to our dear Br. Cijo Aricatt. Though he is busy with exams, the charisma in him never deterred in helping the community whenever it is necessary. At present he teaches psychology for our minor seminary brothers. We had adoration on the birthday eve and had a sumptuous lunch on the birthday. Dear brother, we wish you God’s blessings and fruitful years ahead. THANKS… Let’s here specially commemorate and thank our past community members: Brs. Wilson Kodungookaran, Lijoy Chiriyankandath, Marialal Manjaly, Joseph Kalaparambath, George Menachery, Stanley Chungath, Vineeth Panackappillil and Sheline Kanjuthara. Dear brothers it is because of your efforts and commitment in the past trinennium that we could stand straight and stable in the fortcoming triennium. As we are preparing ourselves to celebrate the feast of our father St. Francis, we the Bethlehem community wishes you peace and joy abundantly and a happy feast to each one!!!!!! God bless you!!!!!

56 Santhome Waves Calvary Ashram Thrissur Greetings of Peace and Joy from Calvary!!!! Living with Sister Corona Our community is learning to live with, and positively responding to the pandemic Covid 19. We had a month-long special adoration conducted imploring the mercy of the Lord for us and for the world at large to face the challenges of the pandemic Covid-19. In response to the safety measures taken by the local civil bodies and health workers we have closed down our Ashram-church. All the spiritual and liturgical celebrations, including Eucharistic celebration are stopped from 20th March 2020. But it is inspiring to see that many people choose our church as the place of personal prayer and meditation. Community as a whole took the choice to be inside the house as much as possible. Without delay our brothers stitched brown colored face mask for the entire community. Friars are aiding each other by encouraging the practice of face mask and sanitization of hands whenever required. We fast and pray one day in every week in view of supporting the most affected families of our neighborhood by the power of prayer and money. Simple Profession in a Simple way Brs. Donny Ezhekkadan, Loyd Nellisery, Gifto Azakath, Tilljo Madassery and Manu Porathur made their First Profession to the Provincial Minister Br. His joyful presence glittered our spirit of fraternity. We thank and wish him all the best for his studies. ‘F1 iCalvary’ and ‘Eco-Club’ The feast of St. Clarepaved way for F1 iCalvary. F1 stands for the ‘help-key’ in the keyboard and iCalvary for innovation. It is a novel idea born among brothers to mutually help via in-house workshops; to master the computer related technologies and its operations. The reloaded ‘Eco-Club’ started functioning in ever green way. Herbal Garden and Plastic Free Calvary being their first endeavors, the community awaits to receive their assistance to keep up a greener Calvary.

Dave Akkara for delivering lectures mainly focused on the steadfastness to manage stress and overcome episodes of down heartedness. Blessing of the Renovated Grotto The Feast of Rosa Mystica was remarkable with the blessing of renewed grotto situated at the farthest end of the compound wall. The renovation works were done by the brothers of Calvary without the aid of any professional from outside. Now the Grotto shines beautiful and has created a fitting ambience of prayer and silence. Calvary Feast Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (Calvary Feast) was celebrated keeping with all the protocols of Covid-19. Although indoors were the celebrations for this time, did not lack gusto among brothers. We started preparations with the novena and spiritual reflections on Holy Cross for nine days. Leaders of the Family units of Calvary Region came together under the animation of Brs. Guardian and David Francis and decided to have the celebration of this year with economical help given to those families which are most affected by the Covid-19 in the Calvary region. The solemn high Mass on the day of feast was streamed via Tau Vision and other Social Media and the people around greatly benefitted from it. Academic Curriculum and Covid 19. Taking up the challenge of Covid 19, Calvary Philosophical College has started its classes and other programs as usual and regular. Perhaps this must be the only one seminary which started its

We had some of the minor courses conducted on-line otherwise all the classes were as usual. The seminary nowadays is in intense mood, preparing for the First Semester Examinations 2020-2021. Brothers strive headlong to strengthen their brain muscles. Let’s Rejoice. Other feasts and celebrations had its own rhythm. In spite of being in lockdown, Calvary community by no means compromises with the joy of coming together for the various occasions of celebration keeping up the spirit of Franciscan simplicity and being sensitive to the tough time of the people around due to Covid-19. Independence Day and Onam added much to the fervor of Calvary. Stay Safe. God bless you all…

78 Santhome Waves Gorakhpur Tidings Uttarpradesh A RED- LETTER DAY… June 25th was a red-letter day for the diocese of Gorakhpur as well as for the Capuchins. Because, it was the day of the inauguration and blessing of Nirmal Dham Ashram, one of the new mission stations in the diocese of Gorakhpur. On that day we had a celebration that was quite moderate due to the deadly pandemic Covid 19. The arrangement for the blessing was done by Rev Br. Pauly, the procurator of the diocese. The blessing of the house began with the Pontifical Mass presided by His Excellency Mar Thomas Thurithimattam, the bishop of Gorakhpur. Rev Frs. Abrham Kolamkuzhy, the chancellor of the diocese and Jerome Puthukulalangara, the education secretory joined for the Mass together with the bishop. Soon after the Mass, there was the blessing of the new presbytery as well as the grotto of Our

Santhome Waves 79 Lady. Ever helping mentality of our neighbors Rev Frs. Tobin Sowryammackal and Sijo Maniparambil from Deoria and Kasia mission stations made the day more simple and beautiful. The valuable presence and support of the sisters from the neighboring communities made the day more colorful and charming. REMEMBERING WITH GRATITUDE Br. Antony Thaliyath went back to Hatta after completing all the construction works. In Hatta, he is serving as the Chaplain of the LST Generalate convent. Br. Antony Thaliyath supervised the construction work of Nirmal Dham Ashram and St. Mary’s prayer hall under the guidance of Rev Fr.Pauly Payyapilly, the procurator of the diocese. Together with Rev Fr. Pauly he did a great job in constructing both the buildings. He also started the construction work of the school before going from here which is now continued by Br. Dinu Davies. We remember with gratitude Br. Antony Thaliyath who was the backbone of Nirmal Dham Ashram. The hard work, dedication and keen interest that he had taken for the construction of the house made it a lovely place to stay for the coming ones. Even though the departing of Br. Antony’s gap cannot be filled by anyone, the new house is blessed with two young capuchin friars Rev Brs. Dinu Davies and Ruble Parasseriyil who will be looking after the school as well as the social work respectively.

80 Santhome Waves WORK IN PROGRESS… Unsteady climate and the global pandemic did not affect much the construction work of the school. It still is in progress. Timely interventions and fraternal visits of Rev Fr. Pauly Payyappilly and the supervision of Br. Dinu Davies are really a boost for the workers to go ahead. Often our sister rain obstructs the work with her heavy shower but brother sun is always near to us with his scorching heat. We wish to complete the construction work soon and open the school in the next academic year, if Covid 19 permits. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU DEAR BROTHER The first local chapter of our Capuchin Snehashram was conducted in the eve of 19th August under the guardianship of Rev Br. Antony Thaliyath. It was a moment of coming together for each one of us. We shared our joy and fraternity in its fullness. To add more color to the day we celebrated the birthday of Br. Dinu Davies with cheerfulness. Br. Dinu is a person who is very much dedicated and hardworking. He is really a strength for the Gorakhpur mission. In order to thank the gift of our brother to this community, we arranged a special prayer service in his honor. Soon after the prayer we wished him and had a delicious dinner. We gather every month to experience the joy of living together and to revive our spirit by way of regular monthly recollection. Brothers from Gorakhpur mission wish you all a happy feast of St. Francis

Santhome Waves 81 Shanti Niketan, Badalapur, Mumbai Kalyan Greetings of Peace and Joy from brothers of Shanti Niketan Ashram, Mumbai. By the grace of God we all are doing well here. Just as every project, we also are growing up slow and steady, recognizing the providence of God in various problems and difficulties. And we realize that it is the reality which we can find in the beginning stages of every initiative. New bird to our little nest As the New Year began, we were gifted with a new friar in the person of Br. Shinto to our community. He was a great help for both of us and the parishes here. He made himself available for ministries, parish activities, Ekam retreats, and as a bystander in the hospital and ashram when our brothers fell sick. But we were not lucky enough to have him for long, because he was called back to Provincial House to prepare himself to go to Australia. Days of celebration In January, we celebrated our parish feast here at Ulhasnagar (22nd January) and Badalapur (26th January). We had only a small celebration due to the particular circumstances here. But still, we had invited many priests here, on and previous days of the feast. Together with Br. Shinto, we had invited Frs. Joseph, Joseph Mundackal Cap. Jomon, Soji, etc. Every celebration ended up happily and successfully due to the active cooperation of the fathers and parishioners under the guidance of Br. Antony who is the Parish Priest. For Br. Antony it is a special year because this year he completes the 25th year of his profession. Since the lockdown became so

82 Santhome Waves strict in those days we had only a small celebration on the 16th of May.On that day we invited few Rev. sisters of the convent there at Ulhasnagar. We had Holy Mass, in which we prayed for him. On 5th July we celebrated the birthday of Br. Antony at Ulhasnagar and we made this also a simple celebration. CRI Picnic CRI is the forum of all religious groups in Kalyan Diocese. They gather often and have so many activities under the guidance of Bishop of Kalyan Diocese. Every year they go for a small picnic. And this year also we had organized a small picnic to Nasik. We also joined with them for the one day trip. Ekam Retreats Since the great demand and need for the Ekam retreat are increasing we organized our fifth and sixth Ekam retreats in February and March, in which Br. Peter made himself available together with his team. And after that, we could not plan for any more retreats here because the COVID-19 pandemic was on the rise and the central government had declared for lockdown. Active Community life Since the parish churches also were closed due to lockdown, and since there are no activities in the same, we started our life together at Ulhasnagar. During those days we stayed back at the church because the numbers of the COVID patients were increasing in and around our Church. Embrace of Sr. Sickness After all the pre-cautions to keep the Corona virus at bay, still we were caught up in the hands of Corona decease. We were found with a fever on a fine day and in the test at the hospital we were found Corona Positive. By the grace of God, we were admitted in the beginning days of the decease, it affected us only in a mild way. And after getting discharged from the hospital we came back to Badalapur to undergo strict quarantine. Thank you dear brothers for your concern and prayers. It is because of that we could come out of the great pandemic safe and sound.

Santhome Waves 83 Transfers and New Appointments As the new transfer list came, Br. Antony has to move to Wadakkanchery as the guardian of the house. Br. Aloysius and Br. Cijo will also bejoining our community soon.

84 Santhome Waves Calabria Tidings…. Pace bene. First and foremost wish you all a loving experience of our seraphic father in forth coming feast from Br. Joby Poruthur from Italy. As you know I am in Raggio Calabria which is a part of the southern side of the Italy. My community basically consists of Italian brothers. The chapter of our province was conducted recently and as a result my new appointment is in Belvedere (which means a beautiful place to see). I am eagerly awaiting to reach there to enjoy and cherish the beauty of the place and the surroundings. If the time and space allow hopefully I will be there in the beginning of September this year. But for the time being, I continue to stay in Raggio. It’s a busy city. I found a close resemblance to my home city, Thrissur. The word Raggio denotes city of feasts and so it is. The community members with me are Padre Pasquale Mascaro and Padre Emilio Morrone. I enjoy their fraternal love and cherish the horizon of Franciscan universal brotherhood. Time table of the community Since our community is attached to the parish and the other two members in the community are parish priest and assistant parish priest respectively, our time tablewill go in tandem with the

Santhome Waves 85 timetable of the parish and the needs of the parishioners except the time of Lunch (atleast Guardian and me will be there) Results of Covid As you know it was a heavy shock for Italians when this pandemic broke out. By and by we are slowly recuperating from the aftermath. At the onset of the pandemic, under the leadership of our Assistant parish priest Br. Luigi there were charitable activities such as supplying food, basic clothings to the needy etc. By God’s grace, none of us in the community was touched by sister corona. Holidays Though I had blocked tickets two times in the month of April for my holidays to India (via Quatar and Oman), due to the pandemic everything turned topsy-turvy. I think I can take holidays and meet you soon if everything goes well. Wish you once more a Happy feast of our Seraphic father May the good lord bless you all Hearty Congratulations to Br. Dave Augustine Akkara who achieved MD in Psychiatry.
