His father was the revered avant-garde artist Nirode Mazumdar. Chittrovanu Mazumdar studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts and graduated in 1981. Since his first solo exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta, in 1985, the artist has established himself as one of India’s leading contemporary artists known for his compelling works. The inevitable tension between dark and light is at the heart of Mazumdar’s works. With an artistic temperament affected by aesthetic and socio-cultural influences, Mazumdar creates layered imagery with bold brush strokes merging figuration and abstraction. He navigates his visual vocabulary around the tropes of modernism and also incorporates evocative human forms like a curious pair of eyes or outstretched hands. Dominated by the colour black and starkly contrasted with flaming shades, such as lacquer reds and bright Amazon blue, his fragmented compositions at once evoke a sense of both melancholy and mystery and inevitably invite the viewers to locate their own interpretation. Since the late 90s onwards, Chittrovanu Mazumdar has been dedicated to creating multimedia installation art. Using different mediums like digital content, music, light, and materials like iron, rubber, wood, textile and mechanical devices, he creates immersive environments that require the viewer to move around and fully experience the installation. Through the course of his career, Chittrovanu Mazumdar has showcased his works at several solo and group exhibitions at different venues, including New York, London and Paris.","","Lot No. 75 ................................................................. Titled "Fall of the Jade Kingdom II - Paradise Lost II, the work was executed in 2014 with oil, acrylic, glitter, enamel and rhinestones on birchwood. The series takes its name from John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, based on the biblical story of the Fall of Man. In an unique synthesis of Indian miniature and the ethos of western classical art, the opulent paintings of the Paradise Lost Series depict cross-cultural fantastical worlds drawn from the artist’s multifarious influences, ranging from mythology and religion to poetry, literature, art history, textiles and decorative arts, from both eastern and western traditions. Set amidst idyllic skies and classical ruins, these paradisiacal images are inhabited by beastly anthropomorphic creatures engaged in animated scenes suffused with hedonism, violence and debauchery. The artist takes a meticulous approach to executing these extraordinary creations that open up the world of the artist’s imagination to the audience. With a deft tackling of varied mediums of metallic enamel paints, gems, glitter and rhinestone, the labour-intensive process also includes using a porcupine quill to apply these enamel paints on different surfaces, a technique similar to ‘cloisonné’ used in early Asian pottery to decorate metalwork and ceramics. Born in 1974 in Calcutta, Raqib Shaw spent his childhood in Kashmir. His family relocated to New Delhi in 1992 after the political unrest in the region. The artist first began working in the family business, which dealt with exquisite objects such as selling jewellery, antiques, carpets and fabrics. While on a business trip to London in 1993, Shaw visited the National Gallery of Art. The visit had a profound impact on him and five years later, in 1998, he moved to London and started studying at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. After he graduated with a master's degree in 2002, Shaw spent his early days as an artist showcasing his work in group exhibitions and working from a studio in Hackney Wick, London. His talents were recognised by the co-director of the Victoria Miro gallery, Glenn Scott Wright, during one of these shows. In 2004, Shaw’s first solo exhibition was held at the gallery.
