The sculpture, created in 2002, is executed in steel alloy and the footstool is made of bronze. Poignantly reflecting his thoughts on the political and social scenarios of the country, the ‘Imperial Chair’ belongs to a seminal body of work showcased in an exhibition titled ‘Sat Samundar Par’ (Across the Seven Seas) held at the gallery Nature Morte in New Delhi in 2003. ‘Sat Samundar Paar' originated from Subodh Gupta’s vantage as a migrant from the undeveloped northern state of Bihar and dilated to an artistic reflection and critique on the sociopolitical evolution of our contemporary society. The exhibition was a watershed moment in his career and sealed his mettle as an unrestrained experimental artist. The suite of multimedia works not only positioned him as the frontrunner of contemporary Indian art but also led to an unprecedented global reckoning. Reimagining both material and psychological baggage of longing for one's home, that of assimilation outside it, as well as the exhilaration upon return, the artist redefined the concept of ‘ready-made’ objects by transforming them into newly shining paraphernalia, such as the presented lot. The grand chair made of steel alloy and accompanying a bronze footstool similarly harks back to the tumultuous history of migratory separation in the colonial era. Beginning in the mid-19th century, natives from Bihar were shipped away unwillingly on journeys to far-flung colonies such as Mauritius and the West Indies as bonded labourers. In the modern world, free from colonialism but not from classism and capitalism, migrant workers from all over India travel to toil in the Middle East and different regions of Southeast Asia. A profound metaphorical tribute to the hopeful expectations of unassuming venturers, such as himself, the works from the series emerged from an exploration of cultural and personal identity in the globalised world.","Lot No. 48 ........................................................... While these hybrid experiences as an outlander instilled a sense of displacement and ambivalence, they also became the bedrock of his vast uncompromising visual vocabulary and added gravitas to his artistic range. His art practice is influenced by a multiplicity of influences and, in essence offers incisive commentary about the complex relationship between humans, landscapes, and urbanisation. His canvases are conjured with wit and are ruminative of the implications of a rapidly transforming urban environment. The artist achieves this vision with a complex visual interplay and improvisation of varied elements, including memories, panoramic views, technology, detailed imagery, and nature. Executed with a unique visual code that adds new connotations to already familiar imagery, these large-scale works are dramatic, broody, quiescent, and defiant, all at the same time. Nataraj Sharma started his art education at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda and graduated in 1982. Nataraj Sharma has worked in different mediums and genres, and his oeuvre is extremely rich both in content and form. These include oil or acrylic painting, figures, portraits, as well as mixed media works and large-scale installations. Inspired by the stalwarts of pop art like Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, Nataraj Sharma also drew inspiration from the members of India’s famous Progressive Artists’ Group. Nataraj Sharma was awarded the Sotheby's Prize for the best emerging artist in the year 1993 and participated in an artist residency program at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) in 2006. Born in 1956 in Kerala, the artist initially chose the conventional career path and began as a student of Engineering. In 1974, after an introduction to different European movements, including Impressionism and Expressionism, through a book on Western Art History, he became irresistibly fascinated. Eventually, in 1978, he enrolled in a course at Goa College of Art and graduated in 1983. A unique blend of numinous and contemporary artistic idiom, Parthan’s artistic scope spans wide and far to inhibit multiple worlds and meanings. An artist of mythopoeic imagination, he invokes a personal visual language to create highly provocative and richly textured works that stand at the intersection of the material world and the nonmaterial intangible digital sphere and explore the complex and symbiotic relations between humans and machines. In a career spanning three decades, Baiju Parthan has practised in a varied range of mediums and techniques. Beginning with painting, he moved towards a multimedia art practice involving an intriguing use of symbols and archaic imagery. His source of materials is equally diverse. Apart from the tools of modern mass media like television, newspapers, and animation, he has also extensively employed unique objects such as ancient cosmological diagrams, satellite maps, and other scientific charts. Interactive programming- based art and lenticular digital prints on metallic surfaces have also been a part of his oeuvre.","","Lot No. 65 .................................................................................
