Educated at Merton Abbey and Paris. A law graduate of Bologna. A brilliant scholar. He soon won the attention of Henry II. He was ambitious and soon reached the high office of Chancellor. In 1162 Henry made him Archbishop of Canterbury. Thomas developed his austerity and became a determined champion of the Church’s privileges. He became immersed in a violent conflict with Henry which led to his death in Canterbury Cathedral on 29th December 1170. Alban (Feast Day –22nd June) Soldier and Martyr of Britain. He may have killed around 300. Legend says that he was a soldier. Converted and after refusing to offer sacrifice was condemned to death. He was the first English Martyr. He was one of the great Saints of the English Medieval Church. Edmund Campion (Feast Day –28th November) 1540 – 1581. Jesuit Priest and Martyr. London Born. A brilliant scholar at St. John’s College, Oxford. His genius won him the patronage of the Earl of Leicester. He converted to the Catholic Church, being ordained a Priest in 1578. He returned to England and, despite the severe legislation against Priests, worked tirelessly writing booklets defending the Church’s teaching. He died a terrible death a Tyburn on 1st December 1581. A great humanist, a great Priest and a great scholar. John Payne (Feast Day –6th May) 1550 – 1582. Catholic Priest. He worked tirelessly amongst the people and because of his vocation and work was executed at Chelmsford. Born at Peterborough. He made Ingastone Hall, the home of the Petre family, his principle base. He was arrested in 1581 and imprisoned in Greenwich by Walsingham. He was charged with conspiracy against the Queen, was twice racked in the Tower and was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered. He was offered a pardon if he would conform to the Church of England. He was canonised by Paul VI in 1970 as one of the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales. St Elizabeth (Feast Day –5th November) Wife of Zachariah, cousin of the Virgin Mary and, of course, mother of the great John Baptist, who prepared the Jews for Christ’s mission. She was an old woman when she conceived John and her role is clearly described in the opening verses of St. Luke’s Gospel. St Theresa of Avila (Feast Day –15th October) 1515-1582. Foundress of the reformed Carmelites. She was born of an aristocratic Spanish family. She proved to be an outstanding woman, writer of theology, humorist and spiritual leader. She was canonised in 1622 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970.4

Responsibilities Targets Role of Student Write your target level/grade in the box for each subject A fundamental principle that underpins formative assessment is student involvement. If students RE English Maths are not involved in the assessment process, formative assessment is not practiced or implemented to its full effectiveness. Students need to be involved both as assessors of their own learning and as Science resources to other students. They should: ■■Ensure that they have clearly understood the task / activity set, recorded it in their journal and 17 responded fully – giving sufficient time (at least 45 minutes at KS3 and one hour at KS4 per subject) to ensure a high quality response. ■■To meet with the class teacher for support in advance of the deadline should there be any difficulty with the tasks set. ■■To catch up on all work set through absence. ■■Act on the advice given to them through the teacher comments – these may be signposted using EBI (Even Better If…) – by making a response to those areas highlighted and thereby engaging in a positive and ongoing learning dialogue with the teacher. Time may be given for this at the start of a lesson. ■■Feedback constructively and honestly to staff when giving their‘perceptions of the work’. ■■Submit work on time, adequately attending to interim draft and final deadlines without exception. ■■Follow deadlines for large assignments to ensure adequate progress and so maximise potential. Role of Parents / Carers to support Progress Parents who take on a supportive role in their child’s learning make a difference in improving achievement and behaviour.
