2013 ANNUAL REPORT

For good. Our Vision: to raise the quality of life throughout east central Illinois. Since 1972, on behalf of donors, the Community Foundation has distributed nearly $12 million in charitable grants to almost 400 nonprofit organizations that work to improve the quality of life in communities throughout our area. These charitable distributions include designated gifts from endowments, field of interest funds, donor advised funds, scholarship funds and organizational endowments. Community giving is community building. —John Franklin For ever. Our Mission: to be a leader and major catalyst for long-term philanthropic assistance to the residents of east central Illinois.ON THE COVER: As John Franklin and the founders envisioned, the Community Foundation has been entrusted to serve the long-term philanthropic goals of donors. Currently, the Foundation manages over 115 individual funds. With careful stewardship over the years, Foundation assets have grown to the current level of $15 million. The success of the Community Foundation is found in the spirit of generosity— and the donors who care about this generation and the next.TOP LEFT: Champaign-Urbana Altrusa club membershosted migrant summer school students for a specialbook-shopping field trip to Barnes & Noble bookstore. The Foundation provided $1,300 to make this possible.Photo compliments of The News-Gazette.TOP RIGHT: Prosperity Gardens makes multiple statementswith the spade/pitchfork and spoon/fork artistic bike racks. The bike racks were made possible by a $2,400 grant from theCommunity Foundation’s 2012 unrestricted grant cycle funding.BOTTOM: The Homer Lake Natural Playscape connects kids to outdoorexploration fun. This project was funded in part by a Marajen StevickFoundation grant administered by the Community Foundation.

2013…a year with plenty of opportunities to respond to challenges. The outstanding performance of the stock market and the generosity of our donors helped make that a little easier as the Foundation’s assets hit new heights. This, of course, means we are able to increase our distributions to the great organizations that provide for the needs of our neighbors throughout east central Illinois. For the second year in a row, we were able to distribute nearly $1 million to tax-exempt charitable organizations from the nearly 115 funds held by the Foundation. The arts, health and human services, accessible recreation, education, needs of seniors…all were funded through our grant opportunities and as our donors intended. We can respond to local challenges because of the local nature of the Community Foundation. Our donationscome from our area. Our funds are managed by local investment partners. We provide the due diligence to makesure that our donors’ gifts go to good organizations. In 2013, 92.3% of our distributions stayed locally, helpingour residents and neighbors. Through our Center for Nonprofit Excellence, we help local nonprofit organizationsbecome aware of “Best Practices” and how they can utilize these keys to make their organizations even better.Operationally, our challenge for 2013 was the reconfirmation process for “National Standards.” This rigorousprocess is prescribed by the Council on Foundations and ensures that we manage our business, steward ourdonors’ gifts and comply with the highest level of legal, financial and grantmaking expertise. The reconfirmationprocess occurs every five years and places us in the upper echelon of foundations throughout the nation. After years of hearing many of you say that the Community Foundation is a “well-kept secret,” we accepted thatchallenge. With a generous donation from our partners, the Marajen Stevick Foundation and Busey, we were ableto use multiple media to get our story out. In addition, our new website and increased use of social media helppromote our good work and that of the many nonprofits we fund.As you read this Annual Report, we hope you will be struck, as we are, by the number of organizations andcommunities the Community Foundation helped during 2013. We are very proud that our distributions enableabout 145 nonprofits to respond to local needs. We are also energized to collaborate with community stakeholders that believe, as we do, that shared problemscan only be solved by shared action. This led us to join with the Champaign County Chamber of Commerceto help the businesses in Gifford recover from the devastating November tornado with an innovative BusinessRecovery Fund. The Marajen Stevick Foundation challenged us to attract additional donors to help address theneeds of the greater Gifford community. And it is leading us to join together with United Way, the University of Illinois, the Champaign and UrbanaSchools and businesses throughout Champaign County to address the educational and workforce developmentneeds of our students and communities through the Champaign-Urbana Cradle to Careers initiative. We continue to live in challenging times. Thanks to the support of our past and current donors, we are up for thechallenge!Steve Whitsitt Joan DixonChair, Board of Trustees President & CEO 2013 Annual Report • 1

John Dixon/AP Helped Raise Funds for the Ebert Sculpture The Public Art League and leadership of Scott and Donna Anderson established the Ebert Sculpture Fund with the Community Foundation to raise funds to commission a bronze sculpture of Roger Ebert. In the sculpture, hometown boy and world’s most famous movie critic sits on a theater seat showing his signature “thumbs up.” The sculpture will be placed in the front of the Virginia Theatre, where the annual Ebertfest festival has taken place since 1999. Roger’s wife, Chaz, pledged to match up to $25,000 of personal donations. The donations match was completed by the end of the year. Collaborated to Help Tackle Complex Issue of Educational Success for All The Community Foundation collaborates with stakeholders to find solutions to many kinds of problems and issues affecting east central Illinois. In 2013, a community coalition including Unit 4, Urbana 116, the University of Illinois, Parkland College, United Way, CU Schools Foundation, Martin Hood & Associates and the Community Foundation began discussions about how stakeholders could work together to align community resources to ensure that all students have the opportunity and support needed to succeed through crucial milestones that will help them be successful adults. From those discussions, Champaign-Urbana Cradle to Career (CUC2C) was developed. Based on programs that have been successful in raising key indicators of student success from early childhood to high school graduation and career preparedness, the structure of the initiative was developed and the first work group dealing with kindergarten readiness was formed. The Community Foundation is the fiscal agent for the initiative and looks forward to being able to help attract and accept grants and program funding as the work proceeds.4 • Community Foundation of East Central Illinois
