2017 “There is no better way to holistically understand andREPORT TO THE COMMUNITY support the community than by supporting the CFLNFC. The 2017 Nonprofit of the Year award illustrates their expert connection to community.” —Karen Schaufeld Founder, 100WomenStrong

DEAREST READER, A contemporary American leader once quipped that, “change comes at thespeed of trust.” It’s a fact. With your trust, the Community Foundation for Loudoun and NorthernFauquier Counties grew steadily in 2017 by fostering a community ofinvolved grantmakers, promoting strategic local leadership opportunities, and investing in valuable partnerships. In 2017, we granted out almost $1 million in charitable funding thatenabled good works in our local community. Not resting on that success, weare actively planning for the future by working to increase almost 50 fundsdedicated to meeting the needs of our community for generations to come. You can trust that we are more than just grantmakers. Our successfulcommunity leadership programs demonstrate our shared investment in thepeople and organizations that drive positive outcomes needed here at home. We are very proud that the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce named theCommunity Foundation as 2017 Nonprofit of the Year—an honor our staff, volunteers, and Board leaders recognized as indicative of more than justsupport and approval, but also of trust. We are honored to be recognized as a solid, steady, and valuedcommunity partner, ready to provide a wide variety of high-touch servicesto Loudoun and Northern Fauquier. From memorial funds, to donor advisedfunds, to scholarship funds, we offer financial and community investmentsolutions for our legacy donors. And, because of our varied partnershipswithin our community, we serve as dedicated cheerleaders of the nonprofitsector and advocates of increased knowledge for our donors. This 2017 Report to the Community is one way of demonstrating theimpact of our donors and extending our thanks to you for your trust. CREATING APERSONAL LEGACY THIS IS ABOUT YOU Your fund is a reflection of your values and philanthropy. From animal welfare, to human services and health, to youth and elderly, to specific charities you support, we can make it easy and rewarding. Are you thinking about setting up a charity or foundation? Talk to us first. We can help you understand the current nonprofit sector. And, we may serve as an excellent vehicle for your vision. We will work with you to answer the following questions to help determine when starting a Fund or Foundation with us is the right path. DEFINE YOUR CHARITABLE AND FINANCIAL OBJECTIVES. Consider how you want your gift to be used, whether you want future family members involved, and how much involvement you personally want in making grant recommendations. CHOOSE A NAME FOR YOUR FUND. Many donors choose a family name, but you can use any name that is meaningful to you. DETERMINE WHICH ASSETS YOU WILL USE TO CREATE YOUR FUND. Gifts of cash, securities (publicly traded or closely held) or real estate can be accepted by the Community Foundation to set up a fund. Assets with a low-cost basis are often wise choices, since they offer maximum tax advantages: You pay no capital gains tax and receive a favorable income-tax deduction. You may also wish to review assets inside your retirement plan for possible charitable use. If you wish, we will work closely with your accountant and attorney to ensure your charitable wishes are clearly understood and applied. CONSIDER THE TYPE OF FUND THAT MATCHES YOUR INTERESTS. Our staff will help you identify what type of fund fits your vision! It may help, though, to understand how broad and flexible we can be as a giving vehicle with our array of donor crafted funds. MAKE YOUR GIFT TO THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. While your gifts to establish a fund will be commingled with other Community Foundation assets for maximum investment benefits, income and appreciation are specifically tracked and tied to your fund, benefiting your fund for its growth and charitable grantmaking. MAKE A GIFT THROUGH YOUR WILL. Appropriate language to make sure your will meets legal and tax criteria is available. Just ask!6 2017 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

We take on leadership challenges that help to make our community one that we all want to grow up and grow old in.GIVE CHOOSE For 24 hours, residents show their appreciation for the work done by dozens of local nonprofits in Give Choose. THE WORK WE DO2017 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 11

FACES OF LOUDOUN It is difficult to reconcile the lackluster charitable giving in Loudoun County with the beauty and quality of life in our community. And, yet, gifts to charity are far below national averages and those of our surrounding counties. Two studies conducted by the Chronicle of Philanthropy have illustrated the uninspired charitable giving levels in Loudoun County. Neighboring counties give at rates substantially higher (benchmarked by the national average of 3.0%) with Fairfax County at 2.6%, Fauquier 3.2%, and Jefferson at 2.5%, leaving Loudoun with an estimated $1million shortfall in local charitable resources and a 1.9% giving rate. The Faces of Loudoun introduces you to your neighbors in need through a personalized campaign that features real people. From hunger, to mental health struggles, to health, to domestic abuse—it is important to recognize we do have need. And, the charities that serve, aid, and educate depend upon local philanthropy to sustain their missions. We hope you’ll learn more by visiting the dozens of stories featured at FacesofLoudoun.org and our Facebook page @EndtheNeed. You’ll meet many faces there, featuring leaders, volunteers, and those facing life’s challenges. A traveling display showcases stories of our neighbors, moving around the County, including Gum Springs Library, StoneSprings Hospital, Rust Library, Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, Loudoun County Government, and Northern Virginia Community College Loudoun campus. Presentations about the Faces community-service campaign and Loudoun County charitable giving have been made around the county to help increase awareness, including at a March 1, 2017 kick-off program hosted by Northern Virginia Community College.12 2017 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
