Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre “Preserving Traditions, Transcending Culture” Founded in 1989 by Artistic Director Madam Lim Moi Kim, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Troupe (the “Troupe”) began as an avocational troupe offering Chinese dance courses and performing opportunities for dance enthusiasts. Over the years, the Troupe had made remarkable achievements and contributed significantly to the local performing arts scene. Its biennial dance performance “Wu Zhi Si Cun”, which features a repertoire of original works, was especially well-received by renowned industry practitioners and the general public. As the Troupe became more established, it was frequently invited to perform at prestigious local, as well as overseas events and dance festivals. In 2002, the Troupe participated in the “Liverpool International Theatre Festival” held in Canada, performing its original dance drama “Madam White Snake”. The item clinched “The People’s Choice”, “Best Visual Performance” and “Outstanding Supporting Actress” awards, and was well-loved by the audience. In 2012, the Troupe competed at the Fifteenth Singapore World “Gold Lion Award” Competition and bagged a Top Gold Award and Gold Award for the dance pieces “Season of Sorrow” and “Fond-ling” respectively. In the same year, the Troupe was invited to perform at the “Sibu International Dance Festival” held in Sibu, Malaysia, where the presented items were highly commended and well-received by the locals. In recognition of its enduring efforts to the local arts scene, in 2013, the Troupe was one of the recipients of the Seed Grant from the National Arts Council (NAC). In 2014, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre (SHHKDT) was officially incorporated under the support of the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. With this affirmation by NAC, SHHKDT has stepped up its efforts in bringing its performances to a higher level, and nurturing more promising dancers. To date, SHHKDT has put up three core productions, including dance drama “A Startling Dream” in 2014, “ROOTED | A Triple Bill” and “Journey: Purpose in Motion” in 2015. SHHKDT also tours annually to showcase its works and sought opportunities for exchange. In 2014, SHHKDT participated in the “Third China Cao Yu Culture Week” held in Qianjiang, China, featuring its original dance drama “In The Wilderness” based on this well-known play “The Wilderness”. In 2015, SHHKDT was invited to perform at the Asia Pacific Performing Arts Networks (APPAN) International Symposium “The Wisdom of Age in Performance: The Intangible Heritage of the Asia Pacific” held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. SHHKDT follows close to its mantra of keeping heritage, strengthening traditions and infusing new elements. In its three years of establishment, SHHKDT has continually seeked to innovate new choreography concepts and styles while retaining traditional roots, so as to present more engaging performances to its audiences. In addition, as part of its preservation efforts, SHHKDT is also committed to developing Chinese dance as an accessible art form by delivering dance education and outreach programmes for the wider community. Apart from its annual core production, SHHKDT's other flagship programmes include a showcase platform for budding choreographers \"Emergence\", two major outdoor community outreach events \"Under the BIG Tree\" and \"Chinese Dance Fiesta\", as well as its year-end dance showcase \"Taking Flight\". This year, SHHKDT is honoured to be one of the recipients of the Major Grant from NAC, and this increased support will only motivate the Theatre to scale greater heights. The Theatre is also a registered charity as well as an Institution of a Public Character (IPC). 4

新加坡福建会馆舞蹈剧场 主席献词 MESSAGE FROM SHHKDT CHAIRMAN 蔡成宗 先生 Mr Chua Seng Chong 在西风强劲的新加坡，福建会馆舞蹈剧场也不甘示弱，毫不松懈地以弘扬及推广华族舞蹈艺术为己任，自成立 以来，舞蹈剧场不遗余力地为新加坡华族舞蹈界培养杰出的舞蹈人才，提高新一代对传统舞蹈的认知。 然而这一次的作品《戏子情》除了注重华族舞蹈以外，还注入了戏曲的元素，目的是为了展现新加坡五十年代 的文化背景，让观众们感受这股新思的综合美。 在艺术总监林美琴女士的带领下，舞蹈剧场专业化，新芽萌发。从而成功地将一部把戏曲舞蹈化、舞蹈戏曲化 的表演艺术舞剧，完美呈现给大家，为本土的华族传统舞蹈又增添了一丝色彩。 5

艺术顾问献词 MESSAGE FROM ARTISTIC ADVISOR 蔡曙鹏 博士 Dr Chua Soo Pong 新加坡各种方言戏曲戏班，有百多年的漫长历史。不论是已经走进历史或历经百多年依然屹立不倒的戏班，都 像其他国家与地区的传统戏剧伶人一样，有许多感人肺腑的故事。昔日，我国老赛桃源名优陈杨桃在回顾她的 往事时就说，戏班日子三日风四日雨，不容易。凭着同行情和义，才能渡过重重难关。 林美琴老师数十年业余参加潮剧演出，对戏曲艺术有深厚感情。她领导下的团队，今年选择了以舞剧来讲述伶 人的故事。 舞剧，是舞蹈艺术的最高形式。舞剧在艺术表现上要求叙事与抒情相结合，以舞蹈的手段来塑造形象、展现剧 情，表现戏剧冲突。编导要有较强的概括力，以独舞、双人舞、三人舞和群舞的舞蹈本体，描述故事中的人与 事。回顾东西方舞坛，从《天鹅湖》、《宝莲灯》到《马兰花》，舞剧艺术的综合性，造就了它以人体动态语 言，表现人在各种情境中强烈思想与感情的传达的经典作品。这些舞剧，有强烈的视听感官的剧场效应，让观 者久久难忘，回味无穷。正因为舞剧有高品位的审美价值和较高的编、导、演难度，深深吸引了愿意挑战自己 的福建会馆舞蹈剧场的团队，再次向舞剧创作的道路上前进。 新加坡戏曲历史故事多。此次抛砖引玉，期待更多舞蹈工作者潜心研究，翻阅史料，创作出更多反映现实、启 迪人生、宣扬真、善、美的精彩作品，为多元文化的社会，增添生活的光彩。 6

艺术顾问兼编剧献词 MESSAGE FROM ARTISTIC ADVISOR CUM PLAYWRIGHT 庄耿精 先生 Mr Chong King Ching 作为福建会馆舞蹈剧场的艺术顾问，我在舞剧《戏子情》的筹划过程中，多了一项不寻常的任务，那就是负责 编剧工作；为《戏子情》编剧的动机来自剧场艺术总监林美琴老师。林老师多才多艺，涉足舞蹈、戏曲、武术 三大领域，而且难得在各个领域都取得令人注目的造诣。基于这个背景，她有一个心愿，那就是将戏曲艺术和 舞蹈艺术结合起来，呈献一出讲述早期新加坡戏班故事的舞剧。 林老师与我分享她的想法，我个人也觉得这是个可以发挥的题材，加上林老师在舞蹈和戏曲方面的认识和经验 ，让我们愿意负起这个演出的任务。我们开始讨论50年代新加坡的社会背景、当时戏班的特点、戏曲艺人的生 活状况、以及他们面对的问题和遭遇；然后选出一些适合通过舞剧来表现的内容，由我编成一个故事，再经 过多次的讨论和修改成为老师编排舞剧的蓝本。但我也强调编导老师在排练时不应受限于剧本的框架，而可 以在不影响主要情节和主题的前提下，尽量发挥他们的创作能力和想象空间，使舞剧更富有戏剧性，更加扣 人心弦。 至于舞剧定名为《戏子情》而不是较文雅的如《梨园情》等，林美琴老师也曾就此课题与我讨论过。可能由于 “戏子无情”这句话，令许多人认为“戏子”含有贬义，但我们最后还是决定选用《戏子情》这个剧名，因为 我们觉得它较能真实地反映出50年代新加坡的文化氛围，当时人们就称戏曲艺人为“戏子”，几乎没人用文雅 的“梨园”作为戏曲艺术的称谓。 《戏子情》的筹备过程中，制作组对新加坡50年代的景物、用具和服饰等进行了必要的考究，以期在演出时能 较真实的反映当时的社会风貌；对于教导舞蹈演员学习掌握戏曲的动作与韵味，编导老师也面对过一定的挑战 ，经过老师和演员们多时的努力，福建会馆舞蹈剧场这项新的尝试终于与观众见面了。希望通过这出舞剧的演 出，让观众感受到“戏子有情”，也唤醒各界人士对戏曲艺术发展的关注，并引起年轻一代对戏曲的兴趣、参 与及传承。 7

艺术总监兼总导演献词 MESSAGE FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR CUM CHIEF CHOREOGRAPHER 林美琴 女士 Ms Lim Moi Kim 岁月静好，时光如梭。转眼间，新加坡福建会馆舞蹈剧场自2013年4月1日成立至今已迎来了第三个年头。三 年以来，我们积极进取，志存高远，始终如一往团结、务实、进取、包容的方向不断迈进。点点滴滴的成长轨 迹大家有目共睹。总结剧场成立三年来取得的成绩，我们有了自信，敢于创新突破，这与关心爱护我们的领导 和社会各界人士的肯定与支持是分不开的。 排练舞剧《戏子情》感触良多，回忆18岁在精武体育会向谢树辉老师学武术和戏曲把子功那段日子，每天拉顶 、前翻、后翻、軲轆毛…后来上北京、又南下汕头学戏曲身段，像海绵一样饥渴的吸收，优美的身段, 传统的 程式, 戏剧戏曲的美妙，深深地吸引了我。 没想到排练《戏子情》戏曲部分，能把我所学的戏曲把子功、身段全派上用场。我适当借鉴了戏曲舞蹈中的一 些程式和优美的身段，如戏曲表演中的开门、推窗、上马、登舟、上楼…舞台小天地，所谓“三五步行遍天下 ，六七人百万雄兵”、“顷刻间千秋事业，方丈地万里江山”，“眨眼间数年光阴，寸柱香千秋万代”这就突 破了西方戏剧的“三一律”与“第四堵墙”的局限。另外是在具体的舞台气氛调度和演员对某些生活动作的模 拟方面，诸如刮风下雨，船行马步，穿针引线等等，更集中、更鲜明地体现出戏曲虚拟性特色。 戏曲手眼身法步是那么细腻、柔美、规范，此中凝聚着古往今来艺术家们的心血，它又成为新一代演员进行艺术 再创造的起点，这是一种美的传承和创造。她极大地解放了作家、舞台艺术家的创造力和观众的艺术想象力，从 而使戏曲的审美价值获得了极大的提高。难怪俗话说：三年出状元，十年出戏子。编排一出好戏，真的不简单。 好戏离不开好技艺。而好技艺是不会自己附上身的，还必须勤学加苦练。“演一场，进一步”是演员敬业精神 的体现；“演一场，进一步”是提高表演水平的自觉要求；“演一场，进一步”是对观众负责的切实检验。 8

因此年轻的演员们，除了勤学苦练外，还需要带着一颗虚心学习的心。每天演出完就主动去听取意见：今天表 演台下有哪些反映？有哪些不足？哪些改动得好、哪些处理得不好？这些意见都是改进和提高我的表演水平的 “动力”，要非常珍惜、要非常重视。这也表明我们剧场注重舞蹈表演的完美性，要让观众从里到外都是“美 ”的欣赏，“美”的享受。功夫是“练”出来的，水平是“演”出来的。只有多练多演、实打实地干事业才能 “化”平凡为出奇，从“勤奋”中锤炼成才。 福建会馆舞蹈剧场的精神：成绩永远只属于过去，舞蹈艺术探索的道路没有终点！作为剧场的一份子希望大家 能够以积极乐观的态度来面对剧场今后的发展，不断努力提升舞蹈的教育教学质量水平；加强团队意识和协作 精神，为剧场的平稳过渡和健康发展努力工作，做出巨大贡献。要有主动借鉴学习别人所长的意识，自觉调整 自己的知识结构和能力水平，以适应新角色的需要。 因此，为了呈现一出精美的舞剧，为了培养优秀的舞蹈演员的好苗子，舞蹈剧场的培训教学团队秉承一丝不苟 的严谨态度，虽是业余时间开班授课，却始终以专业标准来设置课程，丝毫不敢怠慢：比如根据学员的不同年 龄分班，每个年龄段中再根据不同的舞蹈基础划分，这样科学的设置和合理的划分，让4岁至18岁的学员都能 够学到适合自己年龄和舞蹈程度的课程，尽可能让孩子们尽显其才。课程内容，主打“华族舞蹈”特色，独创 了一套体系化的教学方案；在上课时间之外，老师们保证一定的练功时间和备课时间，不断总结教学过程中的 经验体会，及时调整教学方案，保证教材与时俱进，在专业水准和孩子的接受能力之间寻找平衡。 很显然，让舞蹈艺术浸润学生的成长人生，这是舞蹈剧场存在的价值，也是舞蹈剧场发展的基础，更是艺术教 育的宗旨。让飞扬奔放的舞蹈姿态，更具有教育的内涵、艺术的内秀、育人的内核，我们任重而道远。 9

An original dance drama, “Life’s A Stage” is inspired by the story of a local Chinese street opera troupe in the mid-twentieth century. It talks of three talented Chinese opera artistes, their intertwined relationships and how their lives revolved about hardship, struggles and betrayal. He has choreographed for numerous Chingay Parades and National Day Parades. His increasing involvement with Chinese opera and theatre drama has led him to introduce various forms of performing arts into his choreography. In 2015, Mr Low had a number of major works. He choreographed for the Sports Hub Opening ceremony – Youth Celebrate! and his mass display item – “Electrolite” was highly commended and featured by mainstream and social media. He also choreographed the Closing Ceremony of the 8th ASEAN PARA Games held at Marina Bay Sands. Mr Low Ee Chiang was also one of the key choreographers for the commissioned performance, “RETURNING” at the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2015. Mr Low currently teaches martial arts, gymnastics and dance at several schools and his works have won numerous medals at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation over the years. 18
