METU Department of Architecture organizes for its students in SUMMER CONSTRUCTION PRACTICEthe 1st year a construction summer practice as a requirementof the “Arch 190 Summer Practice in Construction and general informationSurveying”. This summer practice entails each time theconstruction of a small-scale structure in a rural settlement.Arch 190 Summer Practice has a multidimensional function: Itgets the students of architecture acquainted with constructionactivity and materials; it gets the students have anacquaintance with the rural regions where a great percentageof Turkey's population live and contributes to the community inthe form of a built facility for public use or through acommunity research.In the 9th National Awards for Architecture, organized by TheTurkish Chamber of Architects (Section of UIA in Turkey) in2004, “Summer Construction Practice Program (1958-2003)”of METU Department of Architecture was awarded a specialprize in the category of “Contribution to Architecture”. archweb.metu.edu.tr 89
