Three decades ago, in 1987, our community organized and galvanized in what was called the Second National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights. The theme was “For Love and For Life,We Are Not Going Back.” The march was organized in response to the devastating political climate of the time.The Reagan administration’s blatant disregard for the thousands of people dying of AIDS was immoral.The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the criminalization of our sexual orientation by allowing sodomy laws to stand in states across the country could not be tolerated. Following that march in 1988, a small group of COMmitted and PASSionate individuals started knocking on doors, passing out condoms, and creating change right here in Palm Beach County. Compass, then known as the Stop AIDS Project, was born.We have come a long way.Thirty years later, the Rainbow Resistance celebrates our success, our survival, and ourdetermination to keep fighting.We resist our rights being diminished, we resist our families beingdishonored, and we resist every effort to quiet our voices as we speak our truth.We celebratethe badass women of the #MeToo movement.We celebrate the increased visibility of bisexual,pansexual, gender-fluid and transgender warriors, as they step into public office and leadershiproles.We celebrate the beauty and the value of every one of our lives.

And we celebrate you!For those of you who attended Compass’ first Palm Beach Pride back in 1992, thank youfor empowering us all to show our pride and for paving the way for LGBTQ equality. Forthose of you who are attending your very first Pride with us this year, a very specialwelcome to all of you, as we need you to stand loud and proud with us.We need you because fulfilling our promise to our youth takes effort and energy. Providinga space where teens feel safe and empowered takes mentors giving of their time to berole models and friends. It takes businesses offering expertise and experience, andcommunity groups partnering and collaborating to create a neighborhood of support andopportunity where our young people can see LGBTQ people thrive.We need you because we are stronger together.We come together to offer support forthose in our community who are living with HIV, working through gender expressionissues, or beginning their coming out process.We come together to dance at StonewallBall, network at Pride Business socials, and remember those we have lost in the AIDSMemorial Quilt.Thirty years later, we still have a lot of work to do before we achieve full liberation, justice,and freedom for LGBTQ people. The past year has presented nothing short of anexistential threat to our progress and to our very lives. It is a testament to the sheer willof human resilience that we are all here celebrating Pride together.
